Summary
Once in a while, Sammy Gutierrez lies on her bed, and imagines she’s dying. Her eyelids are getting heavier, heavier. She knows she’ll succumb to sleep soon.
Then, Yaz’s voice cries her name and the camp fam all rush towards her, clamouring, crowding around her fragile body. They touch her cold skin, hold her, hug her around her wounds, and tell her how sorry they were that it took them this long to get to her, how much they love her and appreciate her, and how awful it is she’s been lying here hurting this long, but it’s okay because they’re here now and they won’t abandon her ever again. Yaz carries her away like her knight in shining armour, and Sammy’s wounds are lovingly nursed back to health in the comfort of her own home, with her family all around her, telling her how much they love her, over and over.
But that’s just a fantasy. Sammy has to live in the real world sometimes.

“I am not leaving this time without saying a proper goodbye”, Yasmina's voice was unsteady, almost stuttering, “who knows what could happen out there.” She reached for her own elbow with her free hand - a gesture Sammy had seen countless times. “I made that mistake before.”

Sammy leaned into Yasmina’s hand, taking a moment to bask in the warmth of her touch. A deep, shuddering sigh escaped her and one thing became clear to her in that instance. She didn’t care about seeing her family or having that talk with Yasmina that unpacked the nuances of their fight. She would deal with those when the time came. What she wanted, what she desperately needed, was to wrap her arms around Yasmina and never let her go. Not now. Not ever again.

Wednesday spends her nights behind a camera lens; Enid, her social media-savvy roommate, spends hers in front of one. But as Enid’s online life goes viral, she drifts further and further out of reach. At first, Wednesday doesn’t care. Why would she? She’s immune to the shallow dopamine drip of likes and followers. Or at least, she tells herself that.
Liking every post started out of spite. Then it became a ritual—a pathetic way of staying connected. And she’s perfectly content to yearn from a distance.
Until Enid posts the caption: “What do you do when the person you want is right there but won’t even look up from their camera?”
And, well, now Wednesday is utterly doomed.

But then Wednesday gets hurt, really hurt, and suddenly patience means nothing. Maybe this is what it takes for Enid to admit what she’s been avoiding all along, or at least get close.
