“I’m thinking of ending things.”
James pressed his lips together hard as he fought the urge to suck in a breath at the words. He instinctively reached for his binder of prepared materials and began to flip through it as if it would have the answer, rustling the pages frantically as he did.
“Hello?”
James flinched. “Um, hi, yes sorry it’s uh-- it’s my first day.”
A pause. Then, dry as a bone: “Brilliant. You’d think they’d at least train you to tell people not to kill themselves before handing you a phone.”
James froze, then panicked. “Oh God-- you’re right, I mean, of course-- I didn’t-- oh, shit, I just--”
James’s rambling was interrupted by a quiet sound, over so quickly he almost missed it.
The caller had laughed.
At him.
OR
A muggle college AU where James is a Psychology student who starts working at a crisis center. His first caller is dry, guarded, and somehow familiar, despite being a perfect stranger. Night after night their conversations continue, blurring all the lines between them, until the caller finally makes a choice that changes both their lives forever.

Summary
“It’s gonna be an interesting summer, isn’t it?” Alec asks slyly, eyes focused on the road but voice still pointed at Theo.
Theo ignores the question and instead keeps his eyes locked to the blue Jeep in front of him. From the driver’s seat, he can make out the shapes of Liam and Scott’s heads through their rear window, bobbing back and forth in laughter. He can hear Liam’s hiccuped chuckles from his seat. He decides the sound annoys him. What the hell is so funny?
Theo considers rear-ending the Jeep, maybe just giving it a little nudge with his truck. That’d stop the laughing, wouldn’t it?

Or: five times Theo's in denial about being jealous of Liam and Scott's relationship, and the one time he accepts it.
Alternatively: six times Theo crashes out over Liam and Scott.

“What?” Mason asks like he doesn't understand why Liam is trying to be optimistic for the first time in his life. “Stiles is literally coming here to condemn you and probably start a campaign to – at the very least – exile Theo. He's literally coming to fight with you and you're not good with confrontation…” Mason sees Theo giving him an intense glare but he's not sure what it means. “Scott might be coming too but it's just as scary because he's the alpha so if he sides with Stiles – his best friend, his brother – then that's that. He'll have the final word. I mean, what are you gonna do? Rebel against Scott? I don't think-”
Liam gags, a wave of crushing dread driving him nauseous. Thankfully, nothing comes out.
