And okay, dude is hot like burnin', but Bucky just doesn't have the time or patience for soothing the wounded ego of some gymrat wannabe with an obsession for dressing like he's hiding from the mob and .... why are you laughing, Sam?

It takes you back to a time when things are bright and warm in your memory. You remember your mother, and his, and most of all you remember Steve, skinny gap-toothed Steve, the way his face lit up with this pure, unadulterated shocked joy, at the pie your mother had made for him, with its little sparkler lighting up the dim kitchen. You remember the fireworks, and Steve, his arm around you, leaning against you and saying, "Thanks, Bucky. This has been the best day of my life."
So many fantastic pieces of prose in this fic. Author does a fantastic job of drawing out feelings with beautiful imagery. Well done action scenes and a really smooth rhythm of dialogue. A great addition to the "Bucky recovery" fics and one that I will definitely come back to again.

The higher-ups call it Operation Watchtower, but to Bucky Barnes and the rest of the men on the ground, it's Operation Pestilence. Bucky doesn't mind that much. He was the one stupid enough to enlist, after all, alongside a bunch of other guys stupid enough to enlist. It's their own damn fault they're sitting in muddy holes in the ground getting malaria and eating whatever they can steal from the dwindling Japanese food caches.
Sometimes Bucky crunches his way through a tin of fish heads and gazes out at the sea, wondering if the US Army's forgotten them there on Guadalcanal, wondering if there's a US Army or a Navy even left to remember them or if the Japanese have won and nobody's bothered to let the GIs know. Then he decides fuck it and chucks his tin of fish heads at Foghorn because he's in the mood to wrestle and Foghorn's always up for a fight. They both come out of it laughing and a little bloody and feeling better because, hell, Bucky figured out pretty quick that living or dying is largely just a matter of chance, so why worry?

Though a minute later he curls his fingers and extends them again, moving just slow enough for it to be a caress.
Just tip your head into his touch. He’ll take the lead and trace the folds of your ear with his tongue until you can’t keep quiet any more. Then he’ll smother your desperate little noises with his mouth, fingers twisting in your hair. Kissing deeply, tongues reaching to declare your filthy intentions. Find his knee with your hand and slide wolfishly up his thigh until you reach the bulge behind his fly. Palm him through his trousers until he’s panting in your mouth, until he’s pressing his forehead to yours, hips bucking, and you can see his dark eyes, glinting in the screen’s flickering light, pleading—
Steve jolts back to the present. The credits are rolling and Bucky is reading them as well. The screen blacks and two fluorescent lights buzz to life. Bucky loosens his hand from Steve’s head, welcoming the world back in.

Summary
The thing about Bucky these days is that, while he might be a semi-mythical assassin, he's also vulnerable—the kind of vulnerable that makes total strangers want to drape a blanket over his shoulders and take him to safety. The problem is, of course, that Bucky is already safe.
The first time it happens, Bucky has no idea how to react. He and Steve are walking down the street, when a slight woman takes in Bucky’s terrified eyes, the dark circles so bad they almost look like bruises, and Steve’s protective hand resting on his lower back, guiding him down the busy sidewalk (but it must look possessive, to someone looking for a sign), and comes to the wrong conclusion.
