“But then they'll see.” Dick took in a breath, resisting the urge to get up and move, to do something. Maybe to run away from this conversation.
Liv tilted their head. “And?”
“They won't like it.” Dick's hand shook as he clenched his fist. He forced himself to loosen his grip.
Love, respect, loyalty, it was all too fragile and easy to lose. Something Dick had learned the hard way, over and over again.
“You're not here to be liked. Just as your brother doesn't exist to be useful.” Liv said, a hint of fire to their tone. “You're here to live, and you can't do that by only acknowledging half of who you are.”
“It's the better half.” Dick joked. It felt a little too honest all the same.
Liv didn't laugh, just stared as if they could see right through him. “Do you feel better with it?”
Yes, Dick bit back the automatic response. “I feel tired.” He sighed, scrubbing his hands across his face. “I'm just so tired.”

“Who in the hell did you get in a fight with, Deku?” Katsuki demanded again. Izuku groaned loudly, ripping up a handful of grass and sprinkling it all over his face. The expanse of stars flickered in and out of view, reminding Katsuki of much simpler clear nights – clear nights when he still had this idiot beside him, but lucid and covered in bruises from bike crashes and tripping over roots, not fistfights with strangers.
“Does it even matter who?” Izuku finally muttered. “It was just someone.”
Katsuki looked over at his best friend, curled up on the ground with bits of blood coating his lips and blades of grass sprinkled all over his messed-up face. “I guess it doesn’t matter,” he admitted, “but I’d prefer you fucking invite me next time.”

He didn’t like the taste, and he hated not being in control of his own mind and body. Besides, that shit was terrible for your health, and he was trying to keep to a strict student-athlete regiment. He couldn’t keep his 4.0, set multiple records on the swim team, and go hang out with a bunch of inebriated slackers every weekend night. Why would he even want to?
Stupid fucking Midoriya Izuku, that’s why.
