    Summary

Daniel is sprawled out across the bed, loose-limbed and lazy, somehow filling all the open space it has to offer and leaving Armand to nestle into the gaps. His cheeks are flushed, blood pooling like it knows what comes next. Maybe it does. Armand was reading about classical conditioning the other day. About dogs who become accustomed to getting food when their handler rings a bell.

Perhaps Daniel is the dog, Armand’s teeth sharp bells reverberating in his veins. Or perhaps Armand is the dog, Daniel’s blood a song rattling in his ears. He has been a dog before. He runs his tongue along the bow of Daniel’s collarbone, gathers the salt-sweat there and imagines what it tastes like because Daniel does.

Armand remembers he loved Daniel, once, and that Daniel loved him. Or a version of them did, at least. It isn't his intention to go back to that, but it's not not his intention, either. Such is the prerogative of an immortal: to hold two contradicting desires simultaneously. If nothing else, it passes the time while he waits for this miserable interview to end.

    Summary

    “Why do you ask?”

And fuck, if that doesn’t rattle the box Louis’ tried to lock this up in, and if they weren’t trying to be better, do better, Louis would ask him why do you think? Would ask him what goes on in your head that you think I wouldn’t want to know all of this? Would ask him what it is about the two of them, who can talk for nights on nights on nights, who can know each other’s topography and undersoil, who can live within the most wild and rugged terrains of one another, yet only turn over their most weathered stones for tourists.

    -

Louis and Lestat argue about moving in, the interview, and finally, deeply, darkly, about Magnus.

    Summary

Edward Teach is a pop star about to embark on his latest tour when he develops vocal nodes. Stede Bonnet is the voice specialist who treats him. Sparks fly.

“Right. And could you please describe your singing voice to me? Or sing something you feel showcases your voice, if you feel comfortable. For my usual clientele, I’d suggest their go-to audition song, but I don’t get the sense that you do much auditioning.”

There’s a long pause during which Stede takes note of the guy’s eyes. Not a literal case note, that would be inappropriate. His eyes are large and brown and expressive, quicksand eyes. Eyes a person could get lost in. Right now, they’re slightly narrowed at Stede. He seems to decide something.

“Listen,” the client says. “I appreciate you not wanting to make it weird, but I promise I’m used to it.”

“Used to it?” Stede asks, and there go the eyes again. Stede has the oddest sense of being taken apart, exposed, like the recurring dream he has of walking through the halls of his secondary school without a single stitch of clothing on, down to the same vague, unsettling sense that it should be more awkward than it is.

    Summary

The cabin feels like a warm embrace. It’s dark and smells familiar - like citrus and bergamot and leather, like a hint of lavender from Stede’s bath soaps, the earthy salve they rub into each other’s aches and old injuries, a hint of the tobacco Edward smokes, a hint of the rosewood oil from Izzy’s hair pomade.

    Izzy inhales.

Around him, Stede and Edward are already undressing, Edward still rambling, Stede still nodding or interjecting to ask what Izzy assumes are appropriate questions.

He’s not paying attention. He’s trying to figure out when this place became so sacred to him, when this cabin became such a safe space.

Probably around the same time he fell in love with Stede fucking Bonnet.

    Fuck, who would have thought?

Israel Hands, a love story, and the pirate war.
