Summary
Fyodor lay his head over Nikolai's heart, considering quietly. Nikolai gave him the time, combing his fingers through his hair slowly. His husband tended to process emotions slowly and in complete silence. He reminded Nikolai of this wind-up bird toy he'd owned as a child. It was supposed to sing a lullaby when one turned the screw on its back, but one of Nikolai's younger siblings had thrown it across the living room during a tantrum, and from that day forward there was a delay in the music starting. The grating hum of churning metalwork could be heard from inside the bird for several seconds before it would erupt into melodious chimes. Fyodor was currently in the delay state. Nikolai, contrary to popular belief, was a patient man. He would wait for centuries if that was how long it took Fyodor to sing.

“You’ve been agonizing over getting older again,” Nikolai deduced.
Fyodor gave a noncommittal shrug. He wondered how Nikolai picked up on his emotions so swiftly without being able to see his expression clearly. Intuition or experience turned habit, he supposed.
“Relax, my sweet dove.” Nikolai stooped lower, peppering open-mouthed kisses across Fyodor’s jaw and neck as he lay him down on the sheets, his hips notching comfortably between Fyodor’s thighs. He was warm. He smelled like summer. He held Fyodor like something worthy of reverence. “I don’t want you thinking any nonsense tonight. Just be with me.”
Fyodor wrapped his arms around Nikolai’s neck and murmured against his lips. “I’m here, Kolya.”
“Good.”

Summary
Nikolai thought of life as a sort of half-sleep. The couch kind. You fade out in the middle of a thought. You come back not knowing if you’d gone unconscious or not. You don’t dream. You only imagine. You wonder: is this all there is? There are gas station doorbells and laundromat dryers ringing in your ears. The slats of blinds erect crooked prison bars across your eyes. And the stench of cigarette smoke wafts into your nostrils, and the Devil has returned to you with a bottle of vodka, and he wants to share.
“Fedya, it’s two o’clock in the morning,” Nikolai said flatly—no theatrics at this hour, and not in this mental state—but opened the apartment door wider and let him in.
“We are a pair of insomniacs. You expect this.”
“Are we a pair of anything?”
He was fixed with a look from Fyodor that was resigned like a dull blade, hacking at soft things until they ruptured because it could no longer slice.
