Summary
It was wishful thinking. It had to be the truth. Glinda may not know much but she knew performance, and the more she thought about it the better it fit. Elphaba’s death didn’t make sense. Glinda had seen it with her own eyes and had stupidly believed that was proof it had happened.
Elphaba’s melting shadow had been wearing the hat. Glinda wasn’t sure of the scientification of melting, but surely either all or none of her clothes should have melted. Surely Elphaba herself shouldn’t have melted. Fiyero’s body was missing, and Elphaba’s hat was in her hands.
Glinda stared at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she realized she must have been crying. She looked crazy. It didn’t matter.
Elphaba was alive.

Elphie’s fingers curled around hers, tangled on the bed between them. “I’m in love with someone. My heart’s desire…is for them to love me back.” Her voice was softer now, like she was asking for the impossible. Like she was desperate for this and knew she would never earn it.
“Elphie—”
“But I would never ask for that,” she said quickly. “The Wizard is so powerful, and he could— I don’t want them to be forced to love me. Even if I did, the Animals matter more. I don’t need to be loved.”
Oz, if that didn’t make Galinda’s chest ache. She tightened her grip on Elphaba’s hand. “You deserve love, Elphie. You deserve everything.”

The words don't appear, as neither does the logic. A second ago she had been torn from Elphaba's hands— could still feel her nails digging into the soft skin of Glinda's palms— and yet the marks were absent. Everything was different, but exactly the same.
"Elphaba," she says. "Elphie. You're here."
"Of course I am," Elphaba frowns with a confused smile, almost like a moment ago she hadn't thundered towards the skyline, leaving Glinda alone for the first time since she'd entered her life. "Where else would I be?"
