And if Madeline's life were a fairytale, there would be a happy ending to all of this.
There would be a kiss over the center console of her car, a hand in hers, a dance shared in the rain to music that only her and Helen can hear moving through their veins with the gentle thrum of blood rush.
But Madeline's life is not, after all, a fairytale and she is not a damsel in distress nor is she a princess in charge of changing her own destiny.

Summary
She knows all of the things that make up a good story — when to use contractions to make the story flow more naturally, where to place a good em dash, the right combination of fluffy, pretty sounding words and clinical things that drag the reader down a rabbit hole they don’t want to put down — and somehow she just can’t apply it to her own writing.
But editing brings in a steady paycheck, Helen reminds herself, and it’s a safe, stable career.
No one tears her work — her novel, her baby, her life’s work compiled into two hundred and forty letter sized pages, twenty six chapters, 1.5 spaced and thirteen point font with serifs because it’s easier to read — to shreds and rips it apart like it took an hour and not the better part of a decade and a half.

Helen thinks this might be Madeline’s way of saying I love you, so she makes a vague sound and traces a line down Madeline’s abdomen with her fingernail. She admires the pretty pink that blooms behind her nail — a severe point and longer than they usually are, so she had to get creative with her mouth — and she presses a gentle kiss to the pale skin just millimeters from her lips.
Helen thinks she might love Madeline back.
She isn’t sure if the thought is terrifying.

Helen can’t help the way she giggles.
She especially can’t help the way she flushes when Madeline looks at her like that.
“Can you blame me? You look like a fucking vision.”
Madeline does too, Helen thinks, with her pretty blonde hair and her skin slightly bronzed from the sun, and Helen is especially fond of the way her eyes crinkle at the corners where the foundation has worn off her face throughout the day. She can see the errant freckles peeking out from beneath her makeup and it makes her look so young that Helen’s heart clenches just a bit.
