“Have you been divining?”
“Kind of,” Adaine admits. “I see flashes but they don’t make any sense. I see Fig in two places at once. I see Fabian being called a prince. I see, well… I guess what I saw with Riz ended up coming true. I saw his brain being picked through.”

“We'll be casting Contagion today,” the nurse explains. “There are six possible effects that may be cast on you.” She reads them from her clipboard with a detached voice. “Blinding Sickness, Flesh Rot, Filth Fever, Slimy Doom, Mindfire, and Seizure.”
“Just… just a seizure? You’ll cast Seizure on me?”
“There’s a one-in-six chance of that, yes.”
“Good gods,” Riz mutters. “This fucking school.”

or: In Aguefort's Exposure and Acclimation unit, the students are asked to tolerate combat spells being cast on them. Contagion is the spell of the day, infecting each Bad Kid with a different type of illness. Only by coming together can they survive the nasty spellwork.

Summary
Riz grins. It’s not that he forgets that Fabian is one of the best swordfighters on the Celestine Sea. It’s that he rarely gets to see him matched with an equal opponent to show off his skills. This elf, though she won’t live for much longer, is certainly putting up a good show in the meantime. Fabian, with at least a foot of height on the elf, manages to plant his boot on her chest and kick her to the ground. He holds his sword to her throat. “Yield.”
The elf doesn’t show even a hint of concern on her face. Instead, she smiles sweetly. Her voice echoes over the sound of waves crashing.
“You wouldn’t kill the mother of your child, would you?” she asks Fabian.

Baron frowns, pulling his hands away from the gauze on Riz’s stomach. He tilts his head to the side. “Do you not appreciate what I’ve done for you, my romance partner? I brought you back from the brink of death. Did you want me to leave you to die?”
“Obviously not,” Riz hisses. “But the only reason I was there in the first place was because of you. You put me and my friends at risk, dude.”
“I wish you would call me something more familiar than that,” Baron’s eyes narrow. “A pet name, perhaps.”
“You’re not my pet,” Riz spits.

“Dad, that hurts,” Riz whines, scrabbling for Pok’s hands and trying to push them away but Pok doesn’t let himself move.
“I don’t want you bleeding out, kid. You’re tough. You can push through, can’t you?”
Riz pauses, then nods tightly, tears prickling at the corners of his eyes. “Yeah,” he says. “I can.”
“Attaboy. Stay strong, kid. I’ll get into the medic kit as soon as you stop losing so much blood, okay?”

Summary
Your name is Riz Gukgak. You are sixteen years old, in your last week of your sophomore year of high school. Or you should be but, instead of attending finals week, you are locked up in the den of Mordred Manor with your friends, Figueroth Faeth and Gorgug Thistlespring, as you have been for the past four days and as you will be for another week at least.
Your head hurts. It hasn’t stopped hurting for days, in fact. You’re sure that the pain should eventually turn to white noise, something you can tune out, but you’ve had no such luck quite yet. Instead, the pain is dull, throbbing, and impossible to ignore. If someone were to dissect your head, you’re sure that they would find hot lava inside your skull, burning at your brain and the back of your eyes.
Maybe that’s an exaggeration but you think you’re owed one or two hyperboles at this point. With how sick you’ve been, you think that you deserve to be a little maudlin about your experience.

Summary
The two boys are arguing with the receptionist at the front desk, talking about consent to treat and parental supervision. Riz tunes it out. Either they figure it out or they don’t but Riz certainly isn’t going to be able to help with whatever they’re dealing with.
“Why don’t we call my dad? Is he out of town, too?” Riz asks hesitantly. He knows his dad is usually out of town but maybe he’ll be lucky.
On his other side, the healer flinches.
“Riz, what’s the last thing that you remember?” she asks. She runs her hands through her ginger hair and sucks in a nervous breath.

“Once,” Adaine agrees. “But I’m not sorry about this.” She tenses her muscles and prepares to strike, to slice open Fig’s throat and watch her blood spill.

Riz sighs, a single, forceful burst of air, as if he’s in too much of a rush to luxuriate in a full breath. “You don’t know what it takes.”
“What’s ‘it?’”
“All of it,” Riz exclaims, gesturing at the room around him in exasperation. “Just… everything. Clubs, classes, work, quests, social life, family stuff, my homework, everyone else’s homework, taking care of myself, all of it, Fabian. I have to do it all and I can’t. It’s too much.” His eyes are suddenly wild and manic, reflecting the golden light of the lamp. “It’s everything at once and I can’t do it if I’m not focused, okay? I can’t do it if I can’t stay awake. And I certainly can’t do it if I’m not performing at one hundred percent efficiency. These just… they help me. They help.” He gestures to the pills. “I wouldn’t be able to do it all otherwise.”

If I thought for a second, I would’ve used it to fill up my component pouch before leaving it behind but here I am. No jacket. No spell components. No magic at all.”
Riz sighs. “Yeah,” he says. “And that sucks. But there’s nothing we can do about it now.”

Summary
He hovers his hand over the black button, frozen only by the thought of his mother. How will she feel when she gets the news that her son died, killed by an egomaniac villain who decided to play with the Bad Kids like pieces on a game board? Freshman year ended just two weeks ago. This was supposed to be a relaxing summer, one that Riz could spend with his mom without the stressors of classes and homework on his plate. He should’ve cooked her dinner after long days at work and made her coffee in the mornings.
But he knows he has to make this sacrifice. He knows it because it just makes sense. One life for five. A trolley problem and a prisoner’s dilemma, wrapped up with a bow and dropped at his feet like an unwanted Moonar Yulenear present. He’s a logical person and this is the logical choice.
Riz presses the black button.

Riz nods and pushes himself to his feet, with the butt of his spear, taking in the king’s latest order. He is to retrieve the kingdom’s most valuable treasure from the top of the castle’s tallest tower. The treasure is wanted at tonight’s feast, a shining illustration of the power that the kingdom controls. He climbs the curving stairway, approaching the locked room at the very top.
(Adaine was moved to a locked room at the top of the castle’s tallest tower. She’s given a life of luxury, one that the Oracle deserves, according to her handlers, but it’s no more welcome than the damp cell was. She’s grateful, at least, that they haven’t messed with her head—too afraid of altering her divination magic—but sometimes, late at night, she wonders if it would’ve been kinder to wipe away her personality, the way they did to Riz. Instead, she’s left afraid, impotently angry, and, above all else, lost, clinging to her knowledge that she doesn’t belong here, but being too helpless to plan an escape.)

The Director didn’t mention, specifically, what to do in the case of tonight going wrong, but there is an understanding amongst the Foxhounds about what to do if their identities or their assignments are under threat. They’re not ignorant of why they each carry a cyanide pill. They know that the Foxhound’s cause is greater than the parts that make it up. If Riz needs to die to protect their mission, he’s prepared to do so.
If he could only get this damn pill out of the pocket.

Summary
Fucking ports, he thinks. He wishes he could curse out Aguefort for triggering this apocalypse. He is, after all, the reason that all these monsters can tear their way out of the corners of the multiverse. Dimens are one thing: dimensional hoppers. They walk through open wounds in space-time and wander into Elmville every once in a while. They’re usually nonviolent, often confused and upset, but still have the occasional deadly impulse.
Ports on the other hand—those portal-makers—are vicious. They are creatures that have learned to take advantage of the weakness of each plane in order to travel around and find easy prey to feed upon. They create portals almost instantaneously, meaning that the compound does not have the warning necessary to protect themselves from their attacks.

or: Three years after Arthur Aguefort went mad and tore apart the Material Plane, opening it up for attacks from every other plane in the universe, the Bad Kids are still fighting for their lives and the lives of everyone who matters to them.

Summary
On Gorgug’s small, staticky computer screen, Fig hangs from her wrists in a dark room, lit only by a single, bare lightbulb just over her head. Her face is cast in dark shadows, her cheekbones exaggerated by the angle of the light’s glow. She has blood dripping down her eyebrow. One of her eyes is swollen shut and the other is half-lidded. Fire burns at her fingertips but flickers out as fast as the embers come to life.
Crackling plays from the laptop’s speakers as a voice comes to life. It’s light, unaffected, but sinister. Goosebumps rise on Riz’s skin as he hears the voice say six simple words.
“They forgot about you, didn’t they?”
