The problem was that there was nothing remotely funny about the way his heart would flutter at the sound of his voice. About how the world would brighten up a little bit when Sonic caught a glimpse of those familiar black spines. About how Sonic has been dreaming about his eyes, his smile. Sonic has been dreaming about them.
No, this was anything but a joke to Sonic. This was serious.

Summary
Ash falls to the floor, barely catching himself. Minute steps aside, allowing Spoke to hammer a boot into Ash’s stomach. He wheezes at that, and before he can recover, Spoke picks him up by the shoulders and shoves into the bookcase behind him. Several books fall down, some hitting Ash’s head. He hisses from pain, but when he looks up at Spoke, there’s a smile on his face. “Didn’t take you for a sadistic type.”
Spoke raises his sword. “You’re just getting what you deserve,” he promises, and then—
Before he can bring the blade down, there’s a sound of breaking blocks above him, and something—someone—falls straight on him. They do barely any damage, but they startle him enough to make him stumble back and allow them to insert themself between Spoke and Ash. They crouch on the floor, covering Ash with their body, and point a loaded crossbow at Spoke.
Their hands shake.
During the final confrontation with Ash, Spoke decides to kill him. He meets unexpected resistance.

“We’re the Anti-Student Government Student Government Club,” Ash declares. “It's officially called The Regime because they wouldn’t let us officially register as 'Anti-Student Government,' which is a ridiculous rule they made up just for us.”
“Well,” Tubbo says slowly. “I can’t imagine they’ve ever really had someone try to do that before.”
“Exactly.” Ash nods in a satisfied sort of way, as if Tubbo has just proved his argument. “Nobody else is doing it like us. We’re the first and the best.”
“I see,” Tubbo lies with an impressively straight face. He’s not really sure if he’s supposed to laugh, because conceptually it's utterly comical but Ash seems so equally deadpan and confident in everything he’s saying that it makes it hard not to take him seriously. Admittedly, Ash tends to have this sort of first impression on people. Also second, third, and occasionally fourth.
Either way, Tubbo thinks, that all sounds like none of his business.
