Summary
The image of Colin so badly wounded is horrifying, and Penelope hears herself letting out a choked gasp when she finally manages to take a breath.
“Pen, hello,” Colin says from the chair near the entrance where his men have seated him, smiling through his pain. The kindness in his tone, despite how badly hurt he is, makes tears immediately spring to Penelope’s eyes. “I am fine,” he repeats, reaching with his good hand towards her.
It is not the first time Colin Bridgerton falls off a horse, but this time it is infinitely worse. His injuries not only put an early end to his travels, they also prevent him from doing barely anything. Colin is fortunate to spend his recovery at Aubrey Hall surrounded by his family and Penelope during the off-season, but soon, he gets tired of his boring reality. He is happy enough to spend time with his dear friend and family, but his brain is restless, and with that restlessness comes a memory: what was it that Penelope wanted to tell him right before he departed for his travels?

During his travels Penelope and Colin talk. A lot. They text and exchange emails and the occasional phone or video call if the time zone allows it. But now, face to face, Colin can feel that Penelope seems distant, like she’s putting some kind of wall between them. He tries to rationalise it as a result of her having trouble coexisting with so many Bridgertons, so he gives her time. But as days go by, Colin can’t help but feel like he doesn’t truly know Penelope now.
