Laughing children dart around their legs with ice creams, as street musicians and amateur magicians put on their best shows, coins clinking into their upturned hats.
In the same frame, a certain bright-eyed detective throws his head back when he laughs, open and irrepressible.

There will always be small voices asking for help, he once said, and there were indeed small voices he did help; voices that don’t quite agree with the mass. Voices that matter.

William is mid-thought when the door to the administration office bursts open. His eyes immediately flit upwards to the newcomer, giving the man a quick once-over. Oxfords long past their wear date. Black jacket, either immaculately tailored or a lucky fit, framing a lanky build. Messy bangs brush over a set of dark, piercing eyes, which hold his for the briefest moment. For some inexplicable reason, William feels his pulse skip a beat.
Force of habit kicks in. “How may I assist you?” he asks, fixing his mouth into a polite smile.
The man, having seemingly given William a similar once-over, raises an eyebrow and smirks. “Well, you were easier to find than I expected, Mr. Moriarty. I wouldn’t have guessed you’d be the literal receptionist.”
In which Sherlock Holmes is an elementary school teacher on a mission to figure out why the hell he keeps losing students to the stuck-up, fancy pants school across the street, and rapidly finds himself signed up to solve a much bigger problem than he had bargained for.

Sherlock stares at William for a long moment. Then he sighs and tilts his face towards the wood beams on the ceiling, rubbing his temples. “Ah, Liam. You still are full of surprises. Really. And here I thought I'd had you figured out. A logical tactician. Someone who prioritizes what’s necessary, or opts for the most efficient approach. But you’re actually quite emotional. Surprisingly so.”
William considers this for a moment. He thinks about his role in the world of education, how he grew from the frustration of not knowing, to the inspiration of understanding, to the satisfaction of teaching. He thinks of the injustices he witnessed from the rich against the poor, and he thinks of the quiet rage that had followed, driving him and Louis to seek out former military specialists for their tutelage. He smiles ruefully. “How could I not be?”
