He leans his hip against her workstation, ducking his head until she looks at him. “If I’m not at work, I’m trying to find a reason to come back to work. Let me read your article. I’ll be nice to you about it, not just because someone should, but because I can tell you without even reading it that it’s good.”
“You cannot possibly know that,” Samira blurts out.
He looks at her with an expression that’s stuck halfway between inquisitive and amused; the left side of his mouth threatens a smile. “Sure I can. I know you.”

Jack leans back on his heels, the picture of relaxed ease. A dimple flashes on his cheek, like he’s charmed by her poor manners. “Can’t I visit my favorite vampire?”
She keeps her eyes trained on Jack’s face, doing her best to ignore the call of the steady, solid pulse of his jugular. Trying to ignore the sense memory of it in between her teeth. “I thought Robby was your favorite vampire.”
Jack grins in a flash of teeth. His are human, but no less dangerous to her, now that she knows the feel of his flesh beneath her own, the feel of him writhing beneath her. “There's been a recent upset in the rankings.”
