Mickey makes his way up the steps, quiet in his boots because he knows the younger kids must be sleeping by now. The old wood is icy, but he knows his way around. Snow is just starting to fall, and the grass is slowly turning white.
He knocks on the door quietly, just enough for Ian to hear in the living room or the kitchen. He knows Mickey’s coming back; he wouldn’t have gone to bed without him.
So when Fiona opens the door instead, it’s a bit of a surprise.
“Oh,” she says, tired. “Hey, Mickey.”

“Mick,” Colin starts. “We really just came here to see you.”
Mickey scratches his eyebrow with his thumbnail, then turns to Ian.
Ian just shrugs. “You’re the one that gave them our address.”
A look of recognition passes on his face. At least that part was true.
Mickey blows out a breath and his shoulders drop. He sits on the arm of Ian’s chair, and his voice is a little softer around the edges when he asks, “Where the hell have you guys been?”
Ian figures that’s as good a starting point as any.
“I know they knocked the house down,” Mickey says, “and you weren’t with dad when he moved in next to the old Gallagher house.”

Ian’s features relax, and a soft smile tugs at his lips. “Like this,” he says quietly, reaching out and setting his hand on Mickey’s forearm. “Dinner, just us. House to ourselves.”
Mickey stares at Ian’s hand on his arm and nods.
“It’s… real,” Ian says, smiling. “You know?”

"Uh, no, actually." Ian runs a hand through his hair, his backpack falling off his shoulder so the strap hangs from the bend in his elbow. "Don't honestly know where my phone is. Might be in my locker at the club, or under the bar, maybe."
Mickey eyes him carefully. "It's after three."

Fact: Ian was scared. He’d never say it aloud, in so many words, but Mickey could see it in his eyes. Because he’d held something precious in the palm of his hand, after working so hard to pull himself together, and then he’d dropped it. Left it painted on the pavement in a smattering of broken glass and a van-sized scorch mark.
(Mickey, despite things working out in their favor, couldn’t stop thinking about it. About that eight AM, half-empty bottle of Jameson.)
