Ed Teach shot to higher levels of fame than he’d ever imagined he would. He truly loved acting, but it became a chore when suddenly the whole world knew his face and he couldn’t ever let the mask slip, even when the cameras weren’t rolling. He missed home, he was tired, and he was just so bored.

Summary
Stede knows something is up, Ed can tell; he’s speaking more gently than usual, treading lightly over the soft earth of Ed’s feelings. He thinks subconsciously that it should be an offense to him, being corralled like a child into what will no doubt be a heart to heart amidst the squash vines and berry bushes, but it isn’t. He thinks that he should refuse Stede’s gentleness, should insist that he is a grown man who doesn’t need to be coddled with his problems, but he doesn’t. Instead, he sits comfortably in the patch of grass next to the abundant garden bed, grips the first squash tightly in hand, and begins to harvest.
Or: Ed and Stede have retired from piracy to become lighthouse keepers. What does the life that they’ve built together look like? How will it change after the crew comes to visit for the first time? How will THEY change after confronting some of the fears they left behind?

Stede and Ed have just declared their co-captaincy. Although Ed has been training Stede in combat, Stede's first real raid doesn't go so well: he narrowly avoids dying in a sword fight, during which his hands are badly injured. After Roach sews Stede up, he informs him that he can't use his hands for at least a week, if not 10 days. To Stede's surprise, Ed offers (with a secret, ulterior motive) to help Stede with things while his hands heal: dressing and undressing, eating, drinking, washing up.
