    Summary

“What is it that you’re always writing, Peter? Seems you’re in here more and more nowadays.”

Peter’s hand stilled, leaving a dark ball of ink on the page. “Just letters. For Oxford.”

It wasn’t a lie, not really, because Hope didn’t need to know that he never sent the letters. And anyway, the only reason he never sent them was because they were never finished.

    -

Peter spent half a decade trying and failing to compose a letter back to Morse, to thank him for that generous and utterly undeserved gift all those years ago. In the end, what brought him back was something he thought was buried for good.

    Summary

The first time he went up to Maplewick Hall, Morse was immediately struck by how much he disliked it.

Something kept him coming back, though, and it wasn't the architecture.

It wasn't even the case. Not really.

    Summary

Peter’s first impression of the new constable was a scowl. Lips raised, with creases to the sides of his quivering mouth, brows furrowed like Peter had spat on his shoe. A cheap suit with the tacking stitch still in the back, and a plume of crumpled polyester blend shirt erupting from a pair of ill-fitting trousers.

It began as they all do, with snide looks shot from one side of the station to the other.

It only got worse from there.

    Summary

“Is that one of them cryptid ones?” Peter asked with a smirk, knowing the answer already. “You know, where the clues are all plain gibberish?”
“Cryp-tic. And they’re not gibberish,” Morse mumbled.
“Well how else do you explain that one? ‘Bump on the rear sounded – little accident’. If that’s not gibberish, then I don’t know what is.”
Finally, Morse’s twitching pen stilled. “You know, there’s a beautiful logic to them when you know where to look.”
Peter snorted. “That sounds like something a serial killer would say about, I dunno, blood splatters or something.”

Morse and Peter both decide that working the Christmas Day shift would be a great way to find some peaceful solitude in the festive season.
When they find each other's company instead, things work out a little differently.

    Summary

Somewhere across town, fireworks soared up above the skyline and lit the two of them up in red, then green, then gold.

The cold wine-red stain across Peter’s torso was starting to stiffen as it dried.

“Careful, or I’ll think you want to get me drunk. Although if you do, you’re going to need to buy me something a bit stronger than this.”
“Is that a formal request?” Morse mused.

There’s a new face at the station, and he’s not as shy as one might think. Before he knows it, Peter’s way out of his depth.

    Summary

October 20th, 1968 was supposed to be an entirely ordinary Sunday, much like the previous Sunday and the one before that. Except suddenly Peter Jakes, now with a baby girl in tow, stumbled back into Morse’s life as if he had never left, although it was clear from his dishevelled appearance that he very much had left, and it hadn’t gone fantastically for him.
And it just so happened that Morse had been pining after him for the last three years. So there was that too.

    Summary

Apparently, Division thought an annual team-building exercise was essential to the running of a successful CID, something which Bright wasn’t too happy about given that his station would be overrun by detectives from other departments for the weekend. This summer, word arrived that they had to complete a hike through the Oxfordshire countryside and camp out overnight like bloody Boy Scouts.

It’s safe to say, nobody was particularly excited for it.

Rule one of being undercover is not to get tipsy and tell attractive strangers that you’re undercover. Even when you’re overcome by some inexplicable urge to trust them, because that’s almost certainly down to the alcohol as well.
