The first time Dan Heng felt he had failed his duty to Caelus as the guard of the Astral Express was in Herta’s Space Station. When the Doomsday Beast targeted March and Caelus selflessly shielded her with his own body.
The second time was in Belobog, when Cocolia summoned spears of ice that pierced Caelus through his chest.
The third time came in Penacony, when Caelus recounted his journey and faced death to enter the Land of the Exiles.
Dan Heng swore there would never be another instance where Caelus’ life would be endangered.
After all, the fourth time’s the charm. Right?

Perhaps it had been an expectation before. Caelus doesn’t know when that had stopped being the case. The expectation of being the Express’ guard, and always putting his own life below the others.
Dan Heng puts his own safety last, and Caelus hates it.

Summary
Caelus’ situation with the stellaron inside his chest deteriorates as time passes and Dan Heng is left dealing with what it means for them.

Once the inevitable tragedy does commence, neither of them is prepared at all, least of all Dan Heng.
Being prepared for it was an impossibility to begin with, but due to the fact that it completely catches them off-guard, it makes it all the harder to accept. To expect a tragedy is one thing, one can try and brace themselves for it. But for it to completely blindside them, one can’t quite account for.
It doesn’t happen on a mission, is the thing.
