Summary
Hughie realises that she’s impervious to damage when she’s five and falls off the roof of her family home. She lands hard enough that the stone slab in the garden cracks. Her mother screams, her father passes out, and… she just sits up and asks what’s wrong. Her mother checks her over while her father panics but she’s okay, they make her promise to never tell anyone.
Hughie is sixteen and holding her new baby boy when she realises she’s fucked. Because her father is dying, Robin is about to dump her with the excuse of needing to focus on his studies and not a kid, apparently Kathy McGrady is named Studies now, who knew? And the first thing her baby did when he opened his eyes was try and blast her head off with fucking laser eyes.
Hughie Is twenty-one when her life falls apart. Her dad is dead, cancer in his prostate, brain and liver. Robin has stopped paying child support (like fuck she was telling the asshole that their baby was a supe). And she's let Anthony convince her to have a night on the town. She doesn't know what happened but it has to be something awful to have Vaught standing on her doorstep while her hung-over ass tries to feed her kid soggy cereal.

Steve zones out. He lets Robin's familiar, acerbic voice carry his mind along on a current of fondness and exhaustion; it’s almost meditative. He could listen to Robin ramble forever, and if it weren’t for her predilections when it came to dating, he’d have tried to marry her already. He slips from ‘zoning out’ to sleepy half-awareness after ten or so minutes, happy to let her keep ranting.
Until–
He sits up straight in his chair, actually focusing on one of the many screens in front of him for perhaps the first time since being hired. Because he is ninety percent sure that something just moved… Something that definitely should not have been where it was.

A gruff looking guy sits there with a leather jacket, pulling his dark curly hair into a ponytail with a hair tie and then grabbing a note book from his backpack, resting it on his thigh while he started chewing on a pencil he grabbed from his jacket pocket. Urgh, kinda disgusting.
His legs were bouncing, his head nodding to a beat that wasn't there. His face going trough twenty different emotions in a couple seconds, scribbling something onto the paper, huffing unsatisfied, pausing. scribbling. Sighing. Scribbling. Tilting his head from side to side. Scratching his head. Scribbling some more.
Jeez, Steve felt like he got secondhand ADHD just watching that. -Or: Eddie and Steve have to share a room, after missing their plane . They dislike each other until they don't.

Dick liked to think he had a pretty good handle on the whole ‘big brother’ thing by now, even if Tim still saw sleep as optional and Damian still got a little stabby when a hug lasted too long.
