    Fréaláf watches his mother ride away into the north with the rest of her new family, and does not cry. He goes to the training yard with his cousin and works out his nervous energy with wooden swords and hard blows. He does not cry. He goes to supper in the great hall and picks at the remainder of his mother's wedding feast and does not cry. When the city is silent and the stars are bright he slips from his room, careful not to wake his cousin. Haleth is normally a heavy sleeper, but since his little sister's birth Háma has taken to coming to his brother for comfort when the night is cold and nightmares drive him from his bed. In these last five years, Haleth has developed a preternatural ability to tell when he is needed.
