    Summary

Brother Damiano shrugs. “Or I could keep prescribing you that so at least you can sleep. Even if you must confess and pay penance for it.”

Nicolò mutters a quick apology to the Lord. The man in his dreams was the same bearded man he saw bleeding amongst fire and death. But he did not always struggle in Nicolò’s dreams, no.

He is always travelling, as if he’s in a hurry. In his dreams, Nicolò has never seen him in the same place more than two nights in a row. Sometimes he would indulge himself with others.

With women, and men. Definitely more often with men, as much as Nicolò tells himself he does not keep counts of those conquests. And sometimes the man touched himself with his own hands. And Nicolò would wake up aroused and miserable. This, Nicolò has never confessed to anyone.

On a summer morning in the Year of Our Lord 1099, Nicolò dies at the river near the abbey.

He was never supposed to be there. He’s supposed to have travelled to the Holy Land so he could worship at the tomb of Christ and ask forgiveness for his sins.

His brothers think it’s a miracle, but after the dreams start, Nicolò knows there’s nothing holy about what happened to him.

    Summary

"He must be one of those eccentric billionaires, you know? With a penchant for playing Santa instead of a costumed vigilante."

Nicky rolled his eyes at Quynh when she said that, but that's actually one of the most plausible explanations of all the presents and Joe's covert coming and going. Because nobody admitted to letting him in or giving anyone a copy of the key. In fact, nobody has ever heard of Joe, nobody.

"Maybe he's a real Santa. Visible only to thirsty virgins. You know, like unicorns."

Nicky threw a pillow at Andy for saying that. But a part of him that still believes in destiny, divine interventions and a higher power beyond mankind's understanding thinks that this might be plausible.

    ---

Or, five times Nicky catches Santa unloading his presents in the dead of the night, and one time it's in the daylight.

    Summary

Nicolò curses under his breath as he notices the tell-tale signals of his preheat approaching.

Those can be easily missed if one is not paying enough attention, but Nicolò has been hoping against hope that what happened outside the walls of Jerusalem has somehow changed things. Changed him.

Yet the cramps slowly creeping inside his belly and the tenderness on his chest are as dreadful as they are familiar. He has been dealing with those signs for half of his life and he knows it is only a matter of time before the urge also settles in, along with the wetness between his legs, followed by a fever to burn his senses until nothing good is left.

Nicolò stirs the goat stew over the fire and he wonders if the Saracen alpha will finally try to mount him this time.

After presenting as an omega, for years Nicolò was forced to lay with alpha after alpha, until fate took him to the Holy City. Since being killed and brought back to life, he has expected his alpha companion to try to bed him as well, but the man called Yusuf never dares to touch Nicolò. He is both relieved and confused about it.

The making and the breaking of bread, throughout the centuries.

The first time Nicky bakes bread for them to share — thick, rounded puffs of aish baladi, prepared with the utmost concentration and care — the sun has begun to set in Cairo, staining the sky the same vivid colour as the tangerines that grow ripe and heavy on the trees outside their door.
