Mamma says touch is kind, and it leaves behind the gentle warmth of a midsummer’s night.
Thus, when Jules is four, and a sort of novel pressure reposes on his head, ruffling his hair - a distant echo left only in his muscle memory - he doesn't notice that, where the hand had lain, a small, sizzling char remains. But the heat of it is no less searing for it, and little Jules’ lower lip cries red just as intensely as it would have, were he to understand any better why it hurts so very much.

I was making myself some and I thought, well, you're probably still in the lab, and I know you tend to run cold, so.”
The cup lands at Viktor’s right with the soft clunk of porcelain against polished wood. Clouds of steam cling to the drink’s surface like leeches and Sky belittles herself internally for not having prepared the concoction a tad earlier than she had. Viktor doesn't like it scalding.
“Here.”

Nobody really knows how it happened. Nemuri maintains it must have been in him long before he'd started exhibiting the first symptoms - maybe, even, that he'd never spent a moment without it, since the day the world ended. Oboro theorises it happened suddenly, a gust of wind or a stranger astray in the night, something they must not have seen coming. But Shōta blames the solo trip his husband took to patrol their new surroundings, ever the self-sacrificing one. He shouldn't have let him go alone.
He should've known better than to think Hizashi would tell him if something was wrong.
