“Sound it out,” the governess instructs. “What’s the first letter?”
“I don’t know,” Wylan says again, frustration creeping into his voice. It’s not a proper answer. It’s not what she wants to hear, but he doesn’t know how else to explain it.
He can’t attach sounds to the words, to the letters, if he doesn’t know what they are. Hot tears prick at the inside of his eyes and he tries to blink them away. Wylan can tell the governess is annoyed with him. She thinks he’s being uncooperative again. Lazy. But he’s not! He’s really trying, there’s just nothing to show for it.
