“Perhaps it isn’t fair of me to ask you to enter the same cage I was born to,” he pulled his head away from hers, looking down to her with a sadness that felt so much softer than it had the rest of this night, “but the thought of waiting on nothing but hope for the day I might be granted a name and the freedoms that come with it to instead ask you to be my wife, I…” He trailed off with a slight shaking of his head, not able to articulate the words. He cared for her deeply, he want her as his wife, she had known that for some time. But to such a degree he struggled for the words to describe the chance he would lose her to time and his obligation to the Emperor? Was she worth that.
“None the less I will ask Maomao do you truly want to become my consort, the only one I will ever take, even if not tonight some night soon” the assertion shocked her, she didn’t know why, she knew that’s how he felt. She couldn’t help but look up from his chest to his face at the certainty he placed in those words. Even with the hesitation he had been riddled with since she first arrived tonight.

Summary
Jinshi had listen to almost everything Maomao did and didn't say, often to an equal degree, with infuriating but genuine affection from him. If she had known denying him for sake of her care for Empress Gyokuyou would lead to the branding it did she was sure she would have found a better way to phrase things. Especially when the aftermath of that act had only further bound the two, bound them in an act that can not be undone.

With Maomao vulnerable and Jinshi doing his best to be patient with her, something begins to bloom between them.
