“Wilde, I can’t stay here.”
“You can though, I just told you I’d make it nice for you,” says this strange, young Wilde, frustrated, and he throws his arms out and backs up, gesturing to the expanse around him. Zolf follows, from an almost instinctual need to have Wilde in his radius, frightened of what might happen if he goes too far. “Look—there. Right?”
The sand is coarse beneath his boots, crunching and sliding. Wilde points behind him, and Zolf turns; the door he’d just come through leads not back to Wilde’s Parisian apartment, but into a kitchen. Zolf backs up, startled, slipping in the sand.

Grizz’s writings, though certainly the most cohesive surviving record of her life, do not provide a date or cause.

Even when Sol saw him in the flat he shared with Ned, he was wearing nice jeans and a button-down more often than not, and now he was dressed even more formally, in a long, light grey wool coal, a soft turquoise jumper that looked like it cost more than Sol’s car, and a pair of neatly pressed charcoal grey slacks. The shocked, deer in headlights look that he fixed Sol with upon hearing his name and the paleness in his face were the only signs that something was wrong.
That, and the fact that Sol was picking him up in front of a grocery store and not at his parents house, where Sol knew he had been planning on spending his holidays.
The day after Christmas, on his way back to university from his family's house, Solomon gets a call from his friend Ned. Ned's flatmate John, a quiet, awkward man who leaves the room every time Sol enters it and who has always given Sol the very distinct impression that he doesn't like him very much, needs a last minute ride back to campus from his parents’ home in Edinburgh. As they get to know each other, and as John continues to brush off Sol's questions about what exactly had happened, Sol starts to realise they might have more in common than he thought.

The morning routines are so well-practiced by now as to be muscle memory. This morning, they demand more effort than they should. That’s wrong, a voice whispers in the back of Irving's mind — but everything is wrong here, in this endless purgatory of chill and gloom. The ice takes from them all, day by passing day. No one feels well. A bit of soreness, a lingering headache, fatigue and fogginess dogging one’s heels… it’s all become normal. Amidst the blur of dark and dread, the men hardly notice anymore.
So why should an ache in his head be any different?
