If someone told Penny that, despite her paralyzing fear of men, she would find love at thirty, she’d laugh at them and just continue on as she was. Avoiding men, keeping her head down and wishing upon a shooting star for a happy ending to it all.
And if someone told Robby that after so many failed relationships and trauma, he would find love at fourty-seven, he’d also laugh at them and continue on as he was. Drowning, and barely keeping his head above the water, as waves just kept on crushing down on him.
It seems like they will be laughing together, because they do in fact fall in love.

Summary
The pregnancy had been unplanned.
Children were never a concrete part of her plan. For so much of her life, her one goal was to become a doctor, to save lives, and it was so all-consuming that there was never room for anything else. The future that she had imagined for herself as a freshman in college was always set under the fluorescent lights of a trauma room. The other parts of it, the life she would have outside of her work, was always fuzzy at best. Jack had been the lovely surprise at the end of her residency, knocking on her door the day she graduated, flowers in his hand and his heart on his sleeve.
She would have never dreamed up Jack Abbot for herself all those years ago in her freshman dorm room, yet here he was, making her life better in every way that mattered.
So she can’t help but allow herself to start to imagine a life with a child, half of him and half of her.

She hated the feeling of being helpless and needy. Maybe even hated admitting that she had needs. The idea of baring them to someone, even someone she loved, put her on edge. She knew that Jack was offering to take care of her, but she also knew even he had his limits.
As Samira stewed on it, she didn't see the harm in pushing those limits a little. If Jack was going to send her home from work because she was too sick to help other people, then perhaps she'd show him what being too sick to help herself would look like.

“Can I foster him?” It was out of his mouth before he even realized. Sure, he wanted to ask, but he didn’t want to sound too eager about it. Casey gave him a withering, suspicious glare and he found himself rambling. “I want to. He’s a sweet kid, and I’m a doctor! I’m prepared to take care of him. And I live with my sister who is in school to be a doctor, too. And we have an accessible bathroom already, for after his surgery. My whole house is accessible! Ramps for wheelchairs and all one level. And! It’s a good neighborhood.”
“You got an ulterior motive?” Casey asked, thankfully cutting him off.
Robby hesitated. Her frown hardened and the words spilled out of him, “We clicked. He’s a good kid. I—I wanna adopt him.”

It won’t be easy, with other prisoners getting her in unfavorable situations almost daily and her trauma causing her to struggle in even the most simple situations, however our reader won’t give up that easily. Who knows she might even be able to form a few meaningful connections the longer she stays in prison.
