Garp thought he was quite brilliant when, in an effort to discourage Ace and Sabo’s ambitions of piracy, he gives them custody of his new baby grandson. After all, the two might have been teenage delinquents, but even they wouldn’t actually go out to sea with a baby in their care, right?
Hint: he is very, very wrong.
(An AU where Luffy is born 16 years after Ace instead of 3, and Sabo remains with Ace on Mt. Corvo instead of trying to set sail on his own.)

Summary
Around ten in the morning, Nami signals that they’re approaching an island. At noon, the Thousand Sunny docks in a bay full of white sand and sunflowers with rusty yellow petals. At one, it’s safe to say all the Strawhats have scattered around the island on various errands or explorations. By two in the afternoon, everything changes.
"Luffy?" He speaks without speaking.
"Sanji?" Luffy answers without answering.
"What the fuck—", Zoro curses without cursing, and suddenly all three of them—all /one/ of them—is knocked flat on their ass on the ground.

Zoro stood in the doorway, awake and alert, one hand on the knob and the other perched atop the hilts of his swords, as though he had prepared to face an enemy in Luffy’s cabin. If only, Luffy thought, fingers digging into his arms, If only Zoro could cut out these nightmares.

He should probably put a kettle on, start dinner prep, but he doesn’t want to leave this moment. Luffy will be cold if he gets up, and while Zoro will probably fill his place – he’s been eyeing them as he pretends to nap across the deck – Sanji will be cold too, and no one will fill Luffy’s place plastered over his back if he goes to the galley now.
Selfishly, Sanji wants to stay warm a little longer. He digs his fingers into the thick hair at the crown of Luffy’s head and scratches over his scalp. Luffy sighs and relaxes impossibly more, sinks impossibly farther into Sanji. He’s contorted in a way that can’t be particularly comfortable, but he hasn’t moved in so long that Sanji thinks it’s a new record.

"Sanji!" He says, smile bright and way too enthusiastic for the hour. Though, he ponders, there's not really an hour or circumstances that make Luffy lose his energy, not when it's almost time to sleep, not after a fight, and not at five in the morning, apparently. "Morning!"
"You already said that." He huffs, wary still. Monkey D. Luffy, someone who wakes up early? It feels like the beggining of a bad joke.
"Yeah, but then you started being an ass to me out of nowhere. So I'm saying it again."

Summary
Luffy is as much an orphan as Ace is—as Sabo pretends to be—and he was so desperate not to be alone that he was willing to die for their reluctant, backhanded friendship. He would run after them until his arms and legs gave out, and then at that point he would probably crawl, just so they don’t leave him behind.
Stubborn, selfish, stupid Luffy. The unwanted little kid that Ace and Sabo have begun to shape all their days around.
Something in Sabo’s chest hurts to know that Luffy is afraid. He tips his head and adjusts his arms so that the smaller boy is tucked more securely under his chin. Stars pinwheel slowly across the sky, winter constellations that Sabo will teach his brothers how to find once they manage to get their hands on a halfway decent telescope. There are clouds forming to the east, low and gray, that promise snow.
“Sing,” Luffy mumbles petulantly.
“You’re such a brat,” Sabo complains. But he doesn’t make Luffy go away, and it’s only another moment before he starts humming.

Summary
Sanji tries to imagine Yonji carrying anything for him at all just to be nice. The daydream falls apart instantly, because Yonji only ever took things from Sanji to break them.
“Do you promise you’ll give it back?” he musters the courage to ask, clinging to the cookbook a kind old woman just sold him, unwilling to let it go without making sure. She had smiled and said she was certain her family’s recipes would be in good hands with him and Sanji doesn’t want to prove her wrong before he gets a chance to even try. “You have to promise.”
Zoro gazes down at him with that inscrutable look on his face he’s worn all day. He could probably take the book from Sanji pretty easily but he doesn’t yank it away or twist his wrist until he lets go. They just stand there, sizing each other up. Sanji’s nerves mount with every second but he doesn’t back down.
Yonji would have hurt him already and laughed about it. The first mate of the Strawhat crew simply says, after enough time that Sanji knows he’s taken it seriously, “Promise.”

Living in a kitchen of a run-down restaurant, Luffy and his brothers are surviving. But when foodstores run low, they venture out into the city to find a way out of the sunken city. Along their path, they meet many new friends and love starts to sprout among the horror.Luffy is sure that they will all survive to make it to the surface, he just needs to keep reminding the others of that as well.

And then he freezes, because yes, actually—something is very, very wrong.
The Sunny is anchored just off shore, close enough to see the deck but far enough away that the crew has had to take the Mini Merry to make land. Scattered across the beach in various stages of chaos—rolling around, yelling, fighting—are his crew but not his crew, so similar and yet so, so different. They look younger, fresher, and whatthefuck there, on the deck of the Sunny just peering over the railing, he catches a flash of green—his own green hair—
“Ah, fuck,” he grunts, and then immediately turns back around because no, actually, he does not want to deal with this.

Finding out that Law had time traveled had been decidedly underwhelming. He’d looked at the newspaper, noticed the date, thought about Straw Hat-ya’s ridiculous luck and decided: ‘yeah, that fits’ before contemplating drowning himself in his cup of coffee because fuck his life.
All in all, per the status quo when it came to dealing with the Straw Hat Pirates and their Captain.
(At least Straw Hat-ya was there to suffer with him. Or maybe that was worse.)

At the question (or maybe just Nami, a reprieve from talking to Zoro—who he's still vaguely afraid of) Usopp perks up. “Kind of! I mean, yeah—the big Sun God in the Trench. But also the sea gods themselves, and the missing Moon God—it’s a whole thing,” he says, waving his hands as Nami crosses the deck, book tucked under her arm. Usopp trails off again but she gestures him onward and plops next to Zoro, dangling her feet over the open water, too.
“Go on,” she says.
He stares at them both before letting out a strangled kind of, “Do you actually want to know?”
Zoro and Nami exchange a look. “We have a keen interest in the local wildlife,” Zoro drawls, and Nami snorts out a laugh. The sound startles Usopp, who might be one of the most skittish people Zoro has ever met—second only to Koby, maybe.
Nami elbows Zoro in the side, trying (and failing) to hide her smile as he flips her the middle finger in return. “Local legends, then,” she amends.

Luffy gasps delightedly, head wiping around to stare up at Whitebeard with wide, excited eyes. “Ace tried to kill you too?!” he shouts. Behind him, the party doesn’t necessarily stop so much as pause, focusing in on the growing spectacle before them. Oblivious, Luffy continues on. “How long?”
Whitebeard looks down at the young pirate captain that’s practically vibrating in place. Then he looks to the blond revolutionary that is also staring up at him, gaze considering and keen. Then to his second division commander who now has his face in his hands, ears red where they poke out of his hair. Finally, he glances at the rest of his children, out of loop and confused, yet intrigued, nonetheless.

Or, Ace dies (of embarrassment), Sabo is the dramatic middle child, Luffy is having a blast, and everyone else is just along for the ride.
