It is so, so hard to hate Ouma like this. Kaito’s face twists with his confliction as he looks upon him, so slim and pale and crying. Kaito tries to make himself think of the last trial—of Iruma Miu’s hands, reaching for her neck and kept there in rigor mortis. Of Gokuhara Gonta’s face, devastated as Saihara laid out his crime. Of Ouma’s utter lack of remorse. Kaito tries desperately to remember the fury that made him vote for Ouma Kokichi in the end, finger pressed so hard into the screen it turned white. He tries to remember what made his fist clench and find purchase on Ouma’s cheek.
Momota Kaito kills Ouma Kokichi, and it is not a hateful act.

Ouma wears his lies like an obnoxious crown, shining and fancy, meant to attract attention and paint him as the liar he is from the moment he opens his mouth. His truths, though? Oh, those are his greatest lies, a truth in a lie’s clothing, a perfect disguise. Lying is easy when all people expect from you are lies. You can drop the most obvious truth on them and they will never recognize it for what it truly is.

The weight of his words hits him all at once, unexpectedly. The knife slips in his hand and pierces through the skin of his index finger, sending a flash of pain through its length.
”Shit!" he cries out, lifting his hand to his mouth and sucking on his finger, letting the metallic taste of blood spill on his tongue.
Kokichi smiles at him from the couch, a sharp grin that doesn't reach his eyes.

He’s resting a hand on the doorframe, as though to keep himself on his feet, and he’s smiling sheepishly, but Kaito catches a flicker of pain as it makes its way across his features. His other arm is laid across his midsection, and since they’re standing relatively close together, Kaito can hear how labourious his breathing is. They don’t know each other, but Kaito thinks it’s acceptable to be a little bit worried, considering how every time he’s seen Rantaro around, the guy has had a carefree smile on his face.
