Smiling almost mischievously as he bites into his candy cane, Vessel steps back to let them both inside, and Three can finally make out the words. I’m Santa, it reads, in a comically large font.
Confusion furrows Three’s brow. “What’s the sweater about? Didya just get really into the holiday spirit this year, or what?”
Ves laughs, bright and sparkling, and tugs at the knit fabric. “You should see Two’s.”

Otter doesn’t have much of a chance to celebrate his birthdays. Growing up in the system meant there was hardly any resource to spare, especially on a troubled child and teenager like Otter. Being born on April Fool’s Day ensured that Otter’s birthday - or Otter himself - became the joke and target of unwanted jabs and teasing.
Birthdays are nothing, Otter claims. They don’t need to celebrate, not when they can spend the time and strength on something more, something to make the mundane extraordinary, something for them instead of just him.
But ‘need’ is not the same as ‘want’. Jack sees the effort Otter puts into his nieces and nephews’ birthdays and how he practically throws his entire soul into organising Jack’s. He notices the way he exhales when the children blow their candles, as if he himself is blowing them out, too. He remembers how Otter, usually one to wolf down his meal within five minutes, will chip through his slice of birthday cake nibble by nibble, his eyes distant, a dreamy smile on his handsome face.
So yeah. Jack is going to celebrate his husband’s birthday this year. It’s the least he can do for his brother-in-arms, his anchor, his best friend - and the love of his life.
