Crisp, thin air. The rough scrape of blades on ice. The jumbled, unintelligible echo of male voices, ringing off the rafters and bouncing through the empty seats. The familiar smell, sweaty equipment and rubber flooring and Zamboni fluid. Luke’s taken to closing his eyes sometimes, cutting off his primary sense, and just absorbing the noise and the scent and the feel of cool air on his cheeks. That way, regardless of where he is, an arena still feels like home.

Luke looks up at him, mind going a million miles an hour, considering the proposition. This was fucking insane, he would be insane to agree to it. He could literally be murdered. By a fit-and-nice-but-possibly-a-murderer Australian man.
Luke sighs and shakes his head, but he can’t help but smile. “I don’t know anything about you, I don’t even know your name, why would I get in a car with you for the next three weeks?”
The man’s lips quirk up slowly, knowing Luke’s made up his mind.
“We’ve got time for all of that,” he says, grin growing wider. He reaches his hand down to Luke. “I’m Calum.”
Luke's just got to California, on a trip to get away from his life for a while. Calum might be there for the same reason. When a chance meeting pushes them together, Luke might get more out of the four-week road trip than he ever imagined.

Ashton looks up at Luke through his eyelashes, still gripping Luke’s arm lightly. His eyes are filled with concern. “Are you sure? It looks kinda bad.”
“It’ll be okay. I’ll have First Aid look at it after I get my shortbread out.” This seems to placate Ashton, who nods once and drops Luke’s arm. “Okay, as long as you promise to get it looked at. I can’t be the reason you lose an arm. I’ll never be able to live with myself.” He smiles at Luke, and Luke can’t help but smile back. He hopes he doesn’t look too obviously smitten. He can almost feel the cartoon hearts popping up over his head.

So as the clock is bitterly creeping towards midnight, signifying the start of a new year, Calum throws his own New Year’s resolution into the atmosphere. As the crowd screams through the final five, four, three, two, one, Calum lets himself be swept up in the excited energy of another year ending, a new one beginning. The people around him cheer and kiss and celebrate, full of glee and promises for a better year than the last and Calum melts into it, even smiling a bit through the confetti and champagne.
Maybe it’s time to move out of New York City.

Summary
Life has become so mundane in the past few years that there’s very little that sends a thrill up Luke’s spine anymore. It’s that idea that had him saying yes to the idea of moving out here for a few weeks anyways: the knowledge that this was a completely new place where no one knew his name. He could be anyone he wanted to be here, within reason. He wouldn’t be seeing any of these people again after May, so what’s the harm in becoming a new person for a bit? Someone not so bogged down by the shit in their head that they can’t get out of bed some mornings. Maybe this is a step in the direction of the person Luke wants to be in the future anyways.
Or, Luke inherits a beach house on a tiny coastal island that needs some work. He didn't plan on falling in love with the guy at the hardware store.
