Summary
They reach for the four of clubs at the same time, but Nikola swats Fedya's hand away as she picks up the retelling of her day. It’s hard enough trying to pay attention to one of the most mind numbingly easy games on its own, but it’s damn near impossible with Nikola going on about who said what and which one of her muscles is sore from overexertion.
Not that she’s an unpleasant distraction. No, it’s quite the contrary.
The worst is when she throws out a leg and gently rolls forward to stretch out her hips, still moving cards and talking all the while. Fedya's eyes stay glued to the solitaire spread between them despite not possessing an ounce of care for it.
Nikola grabs the ball of her foot and leans over to stretch her side, a drawn out sigh spilling from her lips. “You’re bored, aren’t you?”

Summary
Dave’s never been one for nihilism, but if there’s ever a point to start, he figures literal minutes before the total and obsolete end of his life as he knows is probably it. Not like there’s any point in giving a shit about things that matter, now, right? Forget flogging it, it’d just be taking the poor dead horse and throwing it down a few flights of stairs and then running it over with a semi-truck for good measure. So to speak.

Summary
Unless the blood you can smell around you is from your brother. It's a nice thought to entertain, but logically, you know it isn't; if it was, you definitely would not be lying on the ground feeling for all the world like you've just had the living daylights beaten out of you.
Or you would be dead. He's temperamental like that.

Summary
“Rose.” Dirk’s tone was calm but strict. “Your mother had a bright future ahead of her. And I’m proud of her for, for managing to make such a life for herself after being a teen pregnancy. She’s not another statistic, she’s…”
To anyone else, Rose might look annoyed, but Dirk could read the sadness reflecting off her eyes. The way she played with her hair, the way she pulled at a thread on her old pajamas.
“She’s your mother, Rose.” Dirk sighed. “Just how I’m your father, no matter what you call me.”
--
Dirk Strider, father to twin children at 15 years old, has to deal with the return of their mother and her newfound family.

Summary
You remember being cocooned in warm arms, and gin-laced, pitying banalities in playing in your ears as she would cup your small, frozen hands in her own. You try not to pity your younger self for letting such a transparent performance take you in. You try not to pity your present self for still treasuring the memory.
What do you do when you have a genetically-coded predisposition for a behavior that runs completely counter to your equally genetically-coded need to be an aloof motherfucker? Obviously talking to your one living relative is out of the question.

“Nah, we’re just throwing a pity party for ourselves,” Dave tells him.
“About…?”
“We miss John and Jade,” Rose elaborates. Karkat considers this a moment.
“Can I join?”
Dave shrugs, Rose’s head still on his shoulder.
