He releases a few more shallow breaths before throwing his head back against the wall, reveling in the crack and pain that expands over his skull. It’s better than the white-hot pounding that settles behind his eyes. He needs a beer. Yeah, that’s it. Just a beer. Then he’ll be all good to go. Ready to face the day, if you will. He hazily remembers the time that blinked over Mac’s alarm clock as he’d first tugged himself from the duvet; 4:23 am. They’d passed out only a couple of hours prior, both equally as trashed.
Hangovers are the worst but they're less awful when shared.

The ache-urge in your chest colored that visceral shade you remember from the copper-caramel taste in your mouth always tries to get you to feel anger, rage, a surefire determination to fix what has gone forgotten, but that’s the shade that drove the King mad, and you don’t want to be some kind of ghost of him—it would be too easy. He reflects you, in your worst moments, but you aren’t allowed to carry glass anymore, so you aren’t allowed to carry him, either.
(Weeks after the end of everything, the party finds an abandoned observatory.)

Mac came out as gay a week ago, but he still won't tell the gang about his relationship with Charlie. Charlie's reached the end of his tether. Neither of them know how to goddamn speak to each other like normal fucking people.

"And it's not like you can use being ashamed of your gayness as a fucking excuse now, because you're out. You're out and proud, and well done you, okay? Congratu-fucking-lations, Mac," Charlie carries on. He swears somebody has switched his brain on like a kettle from the way his blood is boiling. "But you're not ashamed of being gay anymore. So what is it, are you just ashamed of me? Are you too fucking embarrassed that you're in love with me to tell everyone, huh?"
"—Maybe I wouldn't be so ashamed of you if you didn't act like such a goddamn asshole all the time!" Mac snaps. He cuts through Charlie's words clearly, fuelled by building anger, building frustration, not thinking it through at all.
The silence that follows rings like tinnitus in the air. It's deafening. Too quiet in the literal sense but far, far too loud in the emotional sense. Charlie looks at Mac blankly.
