She’s pinning the note to her chest when the door to the roof opens, and the teen spins, and looks wild eyed at a strangely dressed man she doesn’t recognize. He’s giving her wild eyes right back.
They’re both quiet for a moment, the two of them. He’s regarding her, head cocked to the side, and he seems to stop when he notices the note pinned to her chest. His amber eyes flash in understanding.
Silently, he moves from the door, to the edge of the roof, and he peers down at the parking lot, and at the cars, and then back to her. Lydia feels her cheeks burning.
“Thinkin’ bout takin’ a quick trip nowhere, huh?” he says, casually. His voice is rough, like gravel in a coffee grinder.
“Fuck off,” she bites back.
There's a beat as he lights his cigarette.
"As funny as you falling from one office into another would be,” he breathes out smoke as he speaks, “I think it makes better sense to defend yourself, not end yourself, kid.”Series
