Summary
Book 1 - The Last Spring in the Palace
The politics of the imperial court are a dangerous game, and Maomao knew it.
To protect Jinshi from political traps, five years ago Maomao chose to give up her love for him and leave the palace, carrying within her the fruit of that love.
However, the now newly graduated doctor Maomao sees the peace she had achieved away from the palace crumble when she is once again called upon to serve as an apothecary and now also as a doctor to the consorts Jinshi has taken in recent years.
Amidst traps and political intrigues, Maomao does her best to stay out of Jinshi's sight and that of her rivals who see her as a potential threat, while trying to fight against the guarded feelings that are resurfacing with force and keep herself and her most precious possession out of the sight of the thorns that surround the palace.

Kakashi was beneath her, hissing in pain and setting her discarded coffee pot on the table. Sakura gaped at him, shocked for a few reasons.
One, she’d managed to stumble right into his lap, which made for a shockingly nice seat. Two, she’d managed to spill a generous amount of hot coffee on his chest, which also appeared to be shockingly nice. Three, she’d knocked his hat and mask askew, and judging by the way he was cradling his jaw, she’d wager she had done so with her elbow.
Finally, she was almost certain the thing she felt pressing against her ass wasn’t his keys.

Kakashi’s gaze softened and he placed a hand on Tenzō’s shoulder. After an initial, instinctive flinch, the familiar contact encouraged Tenzō to relax.
“We may not have chosen this, Tenzō, but it won’t be a hardship for me,” Kakashi said. “I respect you and I value the relationship we’ve built. I have faith that we can get through this with minimal damage to that relationship.” The ghost of a smile narrowed his visible eye and shifted the mask over his cheeks. “Perhaps we might even enjoy it.”

He should tell Sakura that she was right to care about Sasuke beyond sense or reason, he should tell Sai that all feelings were better than being empty and that even pain could make him strong, but he didn’t believe any of it enough to say it.
