“Do you trust me?” He asks the doctor. He allows himself to believe that perhaps Ratio’s opinion had changed. Perhaps… love is not out of the question after all.
The doctor’s hand stays gripped on the book. “My trust depends entirely on yourself,” he says, carefully. In other words, Aventurine thinks, I would never love you.
Aventurine leans back, a cheerful smile on his face. This is deserved. Only an imbecile would love someone as unpredictable, violent, and monstrous as himself, and if there was something for certain that Ratio was not, it was an imbecile.
His heart has been lost. Aventurine believes emotion is beyond him. Ratio begs to differ (and so does Kakavasha).

Aventurine scoffed. “You say that like you can just, I don’t know, eyeball me and guess my size.”
“Sure I could,” said Ratio, “it’s only a matter of accurate calculation. If your new boyfriend has poor sense of scale, as many men do, he’ll over or underestimate just about everything you hand his way. Fortunately, it’s a problem the more mathematically-aligned of us do not suffer.”
Aventurine’s boyfriend buys him ill-fitting lingerie. Dr. Ratio thinks he could do it better.

They have not spoken of the wings again since the explosion at the Intelligentsia Guild laboratory - save for once, one afternoon when Aventurine lay sprawled across Ratio’s lap, utterly exhausted, and Ratio’s hand paused as he threaded his fingers soothingly through Aventurine’s hair.
“You have no obligation to nor do I have any expectations of you, but I hope you will take care of your wings.” Ratio’s voice was quiet and careful, and when Aventurine turned to look up at him, he was still looking at the book in his other hand. Beams of gentle afternoon sunlight splayed across them both, catching the edges of Ratio’s hair and reflecting in his eyes, still on the pages but soft around the edges. “Naturally, should there be anything I can do for you, you have my full support. But should you prefer time and solitude, you need only say the word.”
Aventurine just hummed and rolled onto his side, hiding his face against Ratio’s stomach. Ratio was warm and solid against him. “We can talk about it later, Doc,” he said, words coming soft and slow and his eyelids growing heavy with sleep, “promise.”
Aventurine really did mean it - he still does.
It can’t be too late.
