They were sitting in a dim bar nursing beers that were wet with condensation. It was a few days after Ryan’s Episode, and he was light years away, busy naming stars.
“Would you be scared of falling if someone was there to catch you?” Shane had asked quietly, but Ryan heard him. It brought him back to Earth before his oxygen ran out.
There was also a message there, underlying Shane’s soft tone.
A whisper of something.
A promise.
Ryan listened and never forgot.

The letter had been nothing but grief wrapped in barbed wire. Every word a deflection, every sentence tipped with venom he didn’t mean. And Sherlock—bloody Sherlock—had taken it. Just taken it. Because he cared. Because, in that maddening, twisted way that was his alone, he loved John.
Loved him in the way that said, I can take it, hit me again. In the way that said, I’ll put a gun to my own brother’s head if it means you walk out of here alive.
It wasn’t right. It wasn’t healthy. John knew that. But knowing didn’t stop the part of him that… relished it. The part that was selfish enough to find comfort in it.
And now, to think that it might all be about to end—this strange, fragile life they’d built—it made something raw twist in his chest. It made him want to slam a fist into the nearest wall, shout until his voice broke.
Because despite every protest, every denial, every stubborn piece of posturing, John had finally understood something in the past year.
He loved him.

Roy narrowed his eyes at him, daring him to say it out loud, and wrapped his fingers tighter around the little legs dangling around his shoulders. Or rather, kicking around his shoulders.
“And Izzy, stop kicking me. You can kick your dad. In fact, I encourage it. Not me, though!”
The little girl giggled. “I'm gonna tell Daddy you said that!”
“Snitch,” he groused and reached up behind his head to tousle that golden mop of hair, making her squeak.

Hohenheim remained quiet for a moment before glancing at her. She had gotten good at reading Van and the tragedy in his skin, bracing for the question before it came.
“…And you’re not ashamed of it, Trisha? The ailments the past in your blood has brought to the surface?”
“Of course not,” Trisha responded softly. She reached over and took her son from him. Running the pad of her thumb over the sleeping babe’s face, she laid it on the soft swell of an infant cheekbone. In the bowels of sleep, Ed cooed, resettling against her bare chest with a wet smack of his mouth. What a hungry little thing. “The story our blood tells is not ours, dear. The love of our ancestors does not make monsters.”
