Work Text:
From the moment Olivia saw the new cat in town, she knew deep down, there would be a goodbye eventually.
The only thing was, that Olivia didn’t care.
Days passed.
She brought her new neighbor cupcakes as a housewarming gift. Her name was Tangy.
Months passed.
A human moved into town. She would bring Tangy gifts from Olivia, and Olivia gifts from Tangy.
Years passed.
The human stopped coming around. Her house stood still in the town, silent. Weeds grew. Trash piled.
Tangy heard a knock at her door. It was Olivia.
“I think I’m going to move away.” Olivia told her, head hung low.
Tangy’s face did not change as she stepped forward and took Olivia into her arms.
“I’ll see you again, ok? Maybe not soon, maybe not for a while, but we’ll meet again.” Tangy told her.
And so, Olivia moved away. And months later, so did Tangy.
There was a little town by the ocean, not unlike her old town, Tangy settled down there.
Months passed.
A human moved in again. A new mayor.
Neighbors came and went, but Tangy stayed. One day, she sat on the beach with a neighbor named Camofrog.
“I heard someone new’s moving in.” He told her.
“What’s their name?” Tangy asked.
“Olivia.”
And so they reunited, just like Tangy had promised.
More months passed.
They sat by a tree, counting down to a new year.
“Tangy… I think… Um…” Olivia stammered.
She didn’t have to finish, Tangy turned to her and smiled brighter than she ever had in her life, resting a paw on Olivia’s.
Months became years.
Again, the human vanished. The town began to decay.
Olivia showed up to Tangy’s door, but this time, she didn’t have to say anything. Tangy just smiled, bittersweet, and embraced her once more.
“I’ll see you later, then? Onto greater things, just like last time.” Tangy said.
“Just like last time. It’s time to go onto new horizons.” Olivia forced a smile, “Listen…”
Tangy listened.
“I was so afraid I’d never see you again last time. I didn’t even know how I would’ve reached you.” She said, “This time, I… I want to be sure you can think of me.”
Olivia reached, and placed a photo frame in Tangy’s paws. A photo of herself.
Tangy turned, rummaged through a drawer, and got a frame of her owns, and held it towards Olivia.
“You too.” Tangy said.
There were words they could’ve told each other, but they didn’t have to. They knew, deep down, that the other knew and felt the same.
More months passed.
A letter appeared at Tangy’s new door.
It advertised a deserted island getaway, and she knew, and began packing the very next day.
It may take weeks, months, even years for Olivia to find her again.
But she knew that they’d meet again.
And somewhere, some place far away, Olivia knew too.
