Work Text:

"Can’t I just burn everything and get this over with?”

“No, Enji! What would be the fun in that?”

“This isn’t fun at all, Toshi. We’ve been walking around in circles for what feels like hours.”

“It’s only been 19 minutes, E. Relax.” Toshinori shook his head at his boyfriend’s irritation and continued walking ahead. He took a left but instantly stopped once he saw it was a dead end. When Enji rounded the corner he groaned loudly and let out a long sigh, causing fire to escape from his mouth.

Toshinori quickly fanned away the fire and scolded him to be more careful as to not burn the crops. “How long are these things supposed to take anyway?” Enji questioned as he shoved his hands deep in his pockets, the cool fall wind made him shiver.

“About an hour and a half, sometimes it could take up to two hours.”

“Two fucking hours?” Enji exclaimed as he followed his boyfriend who began walking back again, trying to figure their way out.

“Yes. Enji this is supposed to be fun. Next week they’re making this even harder, so just think if we waited to come here.” Toshinori frowned when he heard the redhead grumble about how this was a stupid idea. “If you wanted to do something else you should’ve told me. Why did you agree to do this if you didn’t want to?” Toshinori stopped and turned to look at Enji.

Enji stopped walking and looked at the slightly shorter male who had a blue beanie on, but the front pieces of his hair still framed his face. He notices how Toshinori’s brow was furrowed and lips were in a tight line, a look that he’s not used to seeing. Another sigh escaped his mouth, this time Enji made sure no fire was released.

“You just seemed so happy when I asked what do you want to do for our date and you blurted out ‘oh I know! Let’s go to a corn maze.’” He used a slighter higher pitch voice as he imitated his boyfriend. Toshinori glared, something he doesn’t do often, if ever, and crossed his arms.

“Well if you didn’t think it was a good idea you should’ve just told me.”

Enji could clearly tell if he let this conversation go on longer that Toshinori would just get more irritated, so he decided to stop it right now. He stepped closer to Toshinori and took his hands out his pockets and reached out to wrap his arms around his boyfriend. Enji isn’t really the affectionate type, especially in public, but he knew Toshinori was and basically melted every time he hugged him. The blond’s expression instantly changed and a small smile graced his lips as he let his boyfriend hug him.

“Sorry, I’ll try to have fun.” Enji mumbled and started to pull back. Toshinori tried to put on a neutral expression, but couldn’t help but smile and lean up and quickly pecked his boyfriend. He turned around, grabbed Enji’s hand, and started walking again.

The next half an hour was filled with light conversation, and many corn puns. So many puns that Enji was close to actually burning down the place. He gets enough lame jokes at school with Taishiro and his food puns, Hizashi and Nemuri are always encouraging him to say more. And not to mention Ms. Joke herself, Emi. Luckily for him, she’s in class 1-B and usually annoys her girlfriend Rei, but she often visits the class 1-A dorm to “grace everyone with my presence” as she likes to say.

Ever since Toshinori started hanging out with his friends, they’ve began rubbing off on him in some ways, especially with these puns. The difference between them and Toshinori is that sometimes Toshinori’s jokes are funny. And that’s a problem. Once he says a funny joke and Enji smirks or does his signature scoff/laugh, they don’t stop, he goes at full force. And that’s what’s happening now. Enji made the horrible mistake of smirking and saying “tch”, which is the closest to a laugh most people have ever seen him do. As soon as Toshinori heard that he gripped Enji’s hand tighter and the puns kept rolling.

“Corn you believe we’ve been dating for almost six months?”

“Stop.” Enji was silently pleading with his eyes for the terrible, terrible jokes to cease.

“What did one corn say to the other ear of corn? Don’t look now, but I think someone is stalking us.”

“Corn can’t speak.”

“Why was the corn cob lost? He lived in a maize.”

“You’re spending too much time with those dumbasses.”

“How are corn cobs in bed? A-maize-ing.”

“If you don’t stop I swear.”

“I guess you could say that joke was pretty corn-y of me, huh?” Toshinori grinned and quickly raised his eyebrows while looking at Enji. Enji narrowed his eyes and suddenly stopped in his tracks. In a quick motion he pulled Toshinori back and placed his hand on the smaller’s waist. He let go of his hand and placed his warm hand on the boy’s face and gently kissed him.

Toshinori was not expecting this. He knows how much Enji hates PDA, well, guess it doesn’t matter since they’re lost in a corn maze, but still! The most he does is hold his hand and maybe wrap his arm around his waist when another guy is staring too hard at him. Toshinori melted in the kiss and wrapped his arms around Enji’s neck.

This lasted for a few more seconds before Enji slowly pulled away and stared into the blue eyes he fell in love with. “Tell another pun and I won’t kiss you for the rest of the day.” He whispered in his ear, making shivers run down Toshinori’s spine. Usually the blond would have some snarky comeback like “Oh yeah? We’ll see.” But all he could do at the moment was nod, still in shock that Enji just kissed him out of the blue.

Enji nodded and grabbed Toshinori’s hand again. “Lead the way.” He said. Toshinori came back to reality and smiled before continuing to try and lead the way out of the maze.

Another ten minutes passed and Enji started to get bored again, but the determined look on Toshinori’s face made him keep his mouth shut. The temperature also started to drop so he pulled his boyfriend in closer so he could keep them both warm with his quirk.

“Your quirk really comes in handy, huh?” Toshinori mumbled as he turned left, being met with another dead end so he turned around once again, Enji close behind. A few minutes ago, they saw a group of people heading back the way they just came. All of them looked exhausted and like they just wanted to get this over with.

“I guess. I’m sure your quirk is handy too.” Enji felt Toshinori tense and saw him bite his bottom lip as he kept walking. He’s known Toshinori for eight months now and they’ve been dating for six, and he still doesn’t know what his quirk is because the boy won’t tell him.

“It really isn’t.” he said, voice barely above a whisper but Enji still caught it and frowned. He didn’t understand why Toshinori is keeping it hidden for so long.

“Why won’t you tell me your quirk?”

“It’s not a good quirk. Not like yours.”

“Toshi, it doesn’t matter what your quirk is, I just want to know.”

“Well I don’t want to tell you.” He snapped, something Enji never heard him do. The redhead narrowed his eyes and stopped walking once more. He pulled Toshi back and firmly held his hand.

“What’s wrong? I’m just asking for your quirk. We’ve been dating for six months, why won’t you tell me?”

“I don’t want to!” Toshinori tried to pull out of his grip but Enji wasn’t letting him go anywhere.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t!”

“Why not?” Enji pressed even though he noticed how Toshinori was shaking and avoiding eye contact.

“Because I’m quirkless, ok!?” Toshinori shouted loudly, making Enji freeze and eyes widen. He was quirkless? He scanned Toshinori’s face, wondering if he was joking but found no indication of a joke. They stood in silence for a bit before Toshinori broke it again. “Well? Say something?” he choked out, not liking Enji’s silence. The redhead was still processing everything, eyes wide.

Toshinori clearly took his silence the wrong way and ripped his hand from his grip and ran off. When Enji finally realized what just happened he cursed under his breath and quickly started walking, trying to find his boyfriend.

Now that Enji thinks about it, everything makes sense now. The fact that he’s kept his quirk a secret for so long, it’s because he doesn’t have one. Enji even asked Toshinori’s adoptive mother, Nana, what his quirk was, but she would always smile sheepishly and avoid the question. He suddenly feels bad for basically forcing Toshinori to tell him his quirk, he should’ve let Toshinori tell him whenever he was ready.

Enji’s never met a quirkless person before, he knew they exist, but he’s never met one, they tend to stay to themselves.  His father always told him to stay away from them because they’re “different” and “useless”, but now he sees that isn’t true. His father also said how they don’t belong in society and how nothing good could come from talking to them.

The redhead spent five minutes running around in the maze, calling for his boyfriend. When he reached another dead end he stopped in his tracks and clenched his fists, glaring at the ground. “Fuck this.” He grumbled and held his hand out, burning down the corn in front of him to make a path. He didn’t care if the owners would be pissed and ban him from coming back here for life, he just needed to find his boyfriend.

He burned down some more corn and stepped through the opening, he was just about to burn the whole entire maze down when he spotted someone sitting on the ground, knees pulled up to their chest, arms folded on top of them and face buried in them. Enji could feel his heart break at the sight as he approached him.

“Toshinori?” he gently said, noticing how the boy tensed.

“Just go away.” Toshinori’s muffled voice said. Enji sighed and stood in front of him.

“Come on, get up so we can talk, alright?” he was trying his best to be calm, since Nemuri informed him that he can sometimes be a little, and by a little she meant a lot, harsh with his words.

“Just go away!” Toshinori looked up at Enjii, his eyes red and puffy from crying. Again, Enji felt his heart shatter even more. He doesn’t like seeing Toshinori like this, he’s used to seeing him smiling and laughing.

“Listen, about you being quirkless, it doesn’t mat—“ he was cut off.

“Just leave, Enji! I know I’m a quirkless freak, ok? I got that enough and I don’t need it from you so just leave!” Toshinori shouted, clearly angry and looked down at his hands.

Enji was clearly taken aback, not expecting to be yelled at. He groaned, obviously this being calm thing that Nemuri told him to be more often wasn’t going to work in this situation since he keeps getting cut off.

“Yagi Toshinori,” Enji firmly said, making the blond tense and continue to stare down at his hands “I don’t really give a damn if you have a quirk or not. You know why? Because I fell in love with you without even knowing what the hell it was. I’m not with you because of your quirk, I’m dating you because of your personality. You’re the best boyfriend I could ever ask for, even if you do tell horrendous jokes. Now get the hell up and let’s finish this stupid ass corn maze so we can go and finish our date. I told your mom I’d have you home by 10 and I really don’t want her mad at me so get up.” He finished talking and stared at his boyfriend who has yet to move. He thought he was a little too harsh and started to apologize but was interrupted once again.

“Do you mean that?” Toshinori mumbled and looked up at him, a small smile on his lips this time.

“Of course I do. It doesn’t matter that you’re quirkl-“

“No, not that part. The part when you said that you fell in love with me. Do you mean that?” he was full on grinning and Enji’s eyes widen. He replayed what he said in his head and realized that he finally told him he was in love with him.

“I-I mean, well I…I guess so. Why wouldn’t I? We’ve been together for six damn months.” Enji rubbed his neck and looked away, face beginning to heat up and fire seeping from his pores, something he often does when he’s embarrassed. Toshinori hopped to his feet, brushed off his pants, and grabbed Enji’s hand.

“Come on, let’s finish this maze.” Toshinori grinned, his whole mood doing a complete 180 degrees which made Enji raise an eyebrow but not comment on it.

The pair walked through the maze and Enji listened to Toshinori talk about some of his favorite old school, American superhero movies. He listened and commented when necessary, like a good boyfriend. Enji would be lying if he said he didn’t want to mention Toshinori and his quirk anymore, but he could tell this wasn’t the right time.

They both took a right and instantly lit up seeing the end of the maze. Their pace quickened and once they were out the maze, Toshinori threw his arms around Enji smiling and laughing. A few people who walked by looked at them with curiosity, but Enji just shot them a fiery glare and they quickly averted their eyes.

“I know you didn’t have that much fun, but thanks for doing it with me.” Toshinori told him as they waited in line to grab some apple cider before they went back to Toshinori’s house.

“Actually, it wasn’t as bad as I made it out to be. Next time we should split up and see who finishes first.” Enji pulled his wallet out to pay for their drinks.

“Wait, next time? Are you sure?” the shorter male raised an eyebrow as he watched Enji pay the lady, thank her, and hand Toshinori his drink.

“Well yeah,” they began walking to the entrance of the farm to leave “You said next week will be more difficult, right? So we’ll come next week.” He took a sip of his drink and hummed at the taste. Toshinori grinned brightly, so bright Enji swore he was almost blinded, and walked closer to his boyfriend.

On the walk back to Toshinori’s house, the two boys were relatively silent, but it wasn’t awkward. As they stood at a crosswalk, waiting for the light to turn green for them to cross, a breeze made Toshinori shiver and his teeth clatter together.

As soon as Enji noticed this he wrapped his arm around Toshinori’s waist, not caring about the looks he might receive. Toshinori looked up at him surprised but smiled when he saw his boyfriend’s pink dusted cheeks. They crossed the street in silence, Enji’s quirk keeping them both warm.

Once they rounded a corner and saw Toshinori’s house in the distance, the blond decided to speak up again.

“Enji?”

“Hm?”

“Do you really not care that I’m quirkless?”

“Toshi, I couldn’t give a damn.”

This made Toshinori bite his bottom lip, suppressing his smile. He suddenly felt his heart beat faster and looked back at him.

“Enji?” the redhead glanced at him and raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue. “I love you.” He admitted. The Todoroki’s eyes widen and he turned his head, blush on his cheeks.

“Yeah, well you already know I love you.” He grumbled harshly, this making Toshinori burst out into laughter. He moved out of Enji’s hold and grabbed his hand, pulling him a little faster to his house.

“Come on, mom said she’ll make you some kuzumochi before you have to get back to school.”

Enji lit up at the mention of his favorite food and nodded. He watched Toshinori and felt his heart swell. His father was wrong, quirkless people aren’t “different” or “useless”. As Toshinori fished his keys out of his pocket, Enji couldn’t help himself but grab his face and kiss him once again, his lips tasting like the apple cider they just finished drinking.

“What was that for?” Toshinori asked curiously, blush on his cheeks. Enji shrugged and kept staring at him.

“Just wanted to.” he whispered softly. Toshinori felt his heart skip a beat at his boyfriend's gentle and soft tone.

“I corn’t believe how much I love you.” he said lovingly, clearly making Enji grimace.

“No.”

“Did I ruin the moment?”

“Yes.” Enji nodded and Toshinori just laughed and wrapped his arms around him.

“I hope to ruin the moment many more times for years to come.” he mumbled as he rested his head on Enji’s shoulder. Although Enji didn't reply to that, he couldn't wait.
