Work Text:
The two of them getting a dinner together was nothing out of ordinary. Sanemi usually finished at work before Giyuu did and so whenever they had a dinner planned together, Sanemi would come pick him up.
He did so today too. When Giyuu had left the building where he worked, Sanemi was already there, leaning on the hood of his car, his arms crossed as he waited. Something in him stirred at the sight. He was really lucky to have somebody like Sanemi as his friend. Many people found it surprising that the quiet and stoic Giyuu was a friend with a brash guy like Sanemi, but those people didn’t know Sanemi like he did.
They ended up talking about the usual stuff, how they day was, what were their plans for the upcoming weekend and so on. Giyuu didn’t really care what they were talking about, he just liked being around Sanemi. Maybe he liked it too much.
“I made a reservation last week, this place is pretty popular, their food is supposed to be great,” Sanemi said as he looked for a place to park.
“I heard their ohagi is particularly good, could it be because of that?” Giyuu asked innocently, knowing damn well that was the reason for them visiting this overly fancy and expensive restaurant.
The tips of Sanemi’s ears turned red. Giyuu knew him too well. “Maybe.”
Giyuu laughed silently, but he let it go, knowing that despite everything, Sanemi was rather easily flustered and he hated making Sanemi feel bad.
The restaurant they were about to visit was really fancy. Giyuu was suddenly grateful for the fact that he had to wear a suit to work. He would feel rather awkward going to that place in his usual oversized hoodies.
Giyuu glanced at Sanemi beside him. He wasn’t wearing a full suit like him, but he was dressed formally as well. Giyuu wondered how he had missed it when he had gotten in the car earlier. Sanemi was wearing dark jeans, and a leather jacket, which wasn’t exactly elegant, but underneath, he had a burgundy shirt, the material smooth and shining. He looked quite dashing, Giyuu had to look away before he would start blushing.
They got into the restaurant just fine, a waiter leading them to a reserved table. It was true that without a reservation they would never find an empty table, the whole restaurant was packed. Another thing it was, the restaurant really looked as expensive as he had expected. Long table cloths, fancy silverware and nice candles on the tables. A huge chandelier hanging from the ceiling, the dim light of the place making everything seem much more romantic, not to add that soft piano music in the background.
Giyuu had to keep reminding himself that Sanemi brought him there just because of the ohagi. They were just friends, nothing more.
A waiter was by their side almost immediately with menus and offers of wine. Sanemi declined because he was driving, but told Giyuu to order whatever he wanted. Now, Giyuu was the kind of drunk who got tired and just wanted to sleep. He would much rather have a glass of water and he ordered just that.
“No, it wasn’t like that.”
“Then how the fuck was it?” Sanemi asked him, his hands playing with the small decorations on the table absentmindedly.
“Well, Tanjiro was trying to help as I said, it really wasn’t his fault.”
“So it was those two? What were their names again?”
Giyuu withheld from rolling his eyes. He mentioned the three of them often enough for Sanemi to remember their names. “Zenitsu and Inosuke.”
“Right, yeah, those. You can’t even be surprised, man. It’s always those two. Your trainees are fucking wild.”
“They’re not all bad. Kanao is almost as good as us, it’s unbelievable.”
“But of course you didn’t get that one, I haven’t heard you talking about her yet.”
“No, Shinobu got her.”
“Lucky bitch.”
Giyuu didn’t say anything to that. He didn’t dislike the three trainees he was currently responsible for, but having somebody like Kanao would surely make certain things easier. Shinobu really got lucky there.
Something occurred to him then. “Wait, isn’t your little brother in our company as well?” Giyuu asked with a small frown.
“Genya? Yeah. But I have no idea who he works with.”
Giyuu thought for a while, trying to recall seeing him somewhere. They had quite a lot of trainees this year so it was hard to notice just one person. But Giyuu knew how Genya looked, he remembered quite quickly. “I think I saw him with Mitsuri a few times.”
Sanemi nearly spat out the water he was currently sipping on. “Mitsuri? Are you kidding me? That young chick?”
“Yeah?”
“Oh God, this is hilarious. Poor Genya. He must be going through hell.”
Despite Sanemi’s obvious entertainment, Giyuu got a little worried. “Why?”
“You know what, when you see them together, get closer. You will see right away what I mean.”
The frown on Giyuu’s face deepened. He didn’t understand. “Just tell me.”
Sanemi shook his head, a grin still plastered on his face.
“Sanemi,” Giyuu said and while he did so, he reached across the table, putting his hand over Sanemi’s to emphasize that he was being serious. However, it had a different effect.
Not expecting Giyuu to touch him so casually, Sanemi freaked and pulled his hand away in a flash. Giyuu tried to mask his hurt. Sanemi couldn’t be that repulsed with his little touch? He didn’t even mean anything deep by it.
With the quick movement of his hand, Sanemi managed to drop the small part of the decoration, the thing landing on the ground. “Shit.”
“I’ll get it,” Giyuu said with a small sigh and pushed his chair back, standing up. He could see the thing. It was almost under the table, but still rather close to Sanemi’s legs.
Trying to reach it, Giyuu had to get lower. He dropped to one knee next to Sanemi, his hand going for the thing when suddenly a loud cheering and clapping erupted. The decoration was completely forgotten as Giyuu looked up to see what was going on.
The first thing he noticed was the dozens of eyes on him and Sanemi, but mostly on him. Giyuu immediately didn’t like it. What was going on? He looked up to Sanemi only to see his friend beat red and fuming. Giyuu wasn’t sure if he was blushing so hard because of the attention or because he was so angry.
Few people awed at them, another one telling them to go on, that there is no need to be nervous… Giyuu had no idea what was happening.
Sanemi leaned close to him. “Get up,” he whispered into Giyuu’s ear.
Giyuu stood up right away, still not understanding what was going on but trusting Sanemi to figure it out.
“What the hell are you dumb fucks looking at? There’s nothing for you to see,” Sanemi yelled, his eyes wide with fury. His tone made quite a few people turn right away while others seemed offended.
“But he was-” somebody started to defend themselves.
“No, he wasn’t. Y’all should mind your own fucking business.” Sanemi was relentless. He stood up as well, dropped some bills on the table for their drinks, they hadn’t even ordered any food yet. He then grabbed the confused Giyuu by his wrist and started leading their way out.
Giyuu followed. “But your ohagi…”
“I can get that elsewhere,” Sanemi barked out but his tone wasn’t nearly as hostile as when he was addressing the restaurant’s patrons.
He didn’t stop leading him even after they were outside. Giyuu was rather surprised when they passed even Sanemi’s car, left on the parking lot.
“Sanemi,” Giyuu called out his name, but there was no reaction. “Sanemi,” he repeated, this time louder. “Hey, stop for a second.”
Reluctantly he did. He was still flushed. Sanemi looked at the hand he was keeping around Giyuu’s wrist and dropped it almost immediately. “Why didn’t you freaking say anything?” he asked Giyuu, sounding rather accusing.
“Say what?” Giyuu was clueless.
Sanemi’s pushed his head back, looking at the darkening sky, as if he couldn’t believe it. His hands moved to his hips as he looked back at Giyuu. “Don’t tell me- Giyuu, I know you can be pretty dense sometimes but you must’ve realized it.”
Giyuu was giving him no indication he was understanding anything that Sanemi was saying. He was just standing there, quiet, his brows furrowed. Sanemi wanted to slap himself. Giyuu was looking so goddamn adorable, like a confused kitten. He so couldn’t with him anymore.
Sanemi was looking at him, but Giyuu really had no idea what this was about. It seemed like for some reason, Sanemi didn’t want to explicitly say it. Giyuu had to go back and think about it on his own if he wanted to figure it out.
They were in that fancy and expensive restaurant, both dressed for the occasion, Sanemi was sitting there and Giyuu knelt down on one knee right in front of him, just as someone would if they were about to propose. Everyone cheered… oh.
“Oh,” Giyuu said in a passive tone, voicing his thoughts.
“Oh? Is that it? What the fuck does that mean? I can’t read your mind, goddammit.”
“They thought I was proposing to you,” Giyuu told him about the conclusions he came to. “But why did we have to leave?”
“Because! You just said it.”
“It was just a misunderstanding, though. We could’ve just explain it and get on with our dinner.”
“But- well-” Sanemi didn’t know what to say. Now that he had calmed down a bit, his actions really seemed rather far-fetched. He let his temper get the better of him and overreacted. “Didn’t you mind?”
“Mind what? That they thought I was proposing? I guess it kinda looked like that,” Giyuu admitted.
“But you didn’t mind?”
“That people assumed we’re together? Not really.”
Sanemi was silently looking at him, the silence between them stretching. “Do you like me, Giyuu?”
Giyuu flushed immediately. He could either laugh it off, deny whatever feelings he may have had, play dumb and continue pinning after his friend or come clean. Sanemi gave him an opportunity here.
“Yes.”
“Giyuu! The fuck, you can’t just say it like that,” Sanemi turned equally red, shouting, his hands flying to his face to hide it.
“You asked.”
“Yea, but you-” Sanemi took a deep breath. “Fuck this.”
He grabbed Giyuu’s tie and pulled him closer, their chests banging together. Giyuu grabbed the back of Sanemi’s leather jacket to keep himself from falling.
“San-” Giyuu didn’t get to finish what he wanted to say because then, Sanemi’s lips were on his, making him shut up immediately.
Sanemi let go of his mouth way too soon, his eyes opening slowly. He looked at Giyuu with an intense emotion. “I really fucking like you, too.”
