Notes:

Hii!! This is my first fic so please don't murder me lol. I wanted to write something I would read. I came up with this during social studies so it might not be that great. Anyways I will be posting this on Fanfiction.net soon; I will let you all know when I do. In the future, if there are any trigger warnings I will put them in the endnotes.

Chapter 1: The Calm before the Storm

Chapter Text

For those who haven't read the comics!!! When Korra and Asami go to the spirit world they establish a relationship. They tell Korra's parents Tenzin's family and the rest of Team Avatar. (They all support their relationship) Zhu Li decides to run against President Raiko. Raiko has a sly campaign manager named Wenyan. Now you're all caught up.

It was supposed to be like any other day. Korra and Asami were busy making campaigns for Zhu Li’s presidency. Mako was busy filing paperwork, Bolin right beside him.

Korra and Asami just finishing up printing another batch of flyers when Korra exclaimed, “Ugh this is taking forever! Why do so many people live in republic city?!”

“I agree with you. Who knew printing flyers would take this long?” replied Asami.

“I’m the Avatar, I should be bringing peace or something! I mean, I’m happy to support Zhu Li... But still!” X

“At least we’ll finish up soon. Only thirty more minutes.” Assured Asami. Korra was right they’d need to hire more staff.

Time had passed, they were ready to go home. Korra stood up from her seat and stretched her arms with a yawn. Asami dug through her bag searching for her keys. When finally making contact with those metal items she began to quickly walk towards the room’s exit.

Korra and Asami had a dinner reservation at 5:30 and were already running late.

Asami reaches for the door handle. Before her fingers could complete the action a disheveled Zhu Li bursts through the door with vigor. Then she speaks the dreaded words that would become engrained in the girls’ minds forever.

“Have you both seen it yet?!”

XxXxX

President Raiko had never expected it to go this far. Zhu Li was very qualified. Raiko was nervous. The public gravitated to her almost instantly. So, when Wenyan said he would ruin Zhu Li, he went with it. Later after this statement, Raiko saw Avatar Korra’s face on a poster he was even more curious.

‘What exactly does Wenyan have in mind?’

It served the Avatar right to be put in her place. She was such a headache. Always carelessly doing whatever she liked. Always making him look bad. So, when Wenyan presented the final pamphlet to him Raiko approved it.

What a fool he’d been.

Chapter 2: An Offering of Opinions

Summary:

Asami and Korra head over to Air Temple Island to sort out their issues.

Notes:

Hey Guys! Sorry, this is late; my computer crashes every few minutes but here it is.

Chapter Text

“A poster was released... it’s all over town.”

Korra asks before Asami can get a word in, “What kind of poster?”

“It’s better if I just show you.”

Zhu Li hands Korra a poster. Asami looks at it over her shoulder.

‘Avatar Korra is a lesbian?? Does Presidential Candidate Zhu Li Moon encourage Lesbianism?!’

The headline written in big bold letters; a picture of Asami and Korra kissing pasted below the heinous words. The couple recognized that photo, it had to have been taken after their lunch date a couple of weeks back. Was someone stalking them? Did they have more photographs?

“Who put his up?!” Korra demanded.

Zhu Li pointed to the bottom of the page. ‘Curtesy of President Raiko’s campaign’

“Raiko?! Why would he make an ad about us? We have nothing to do with your campaign! I knew he had it out for me!” Korra shouted, at no one really.

“...what...?” Asami said just now processing this new information. “What are you both going to do about this?” Zhu Li asked, collecting herself. “I don’t- I don’t know.” Asami stammers out. “All I know is that I wanna go home. I’m too tired for this.” She continues.

“Let’s go Korra, we can think about this later on,” Asami tells her. “Well, you can’t go home. People are looking all over for you. You’d have to go to Air Temple Island.” Zhu Li interrupts, pinching her nose bridge.

“Air Temple Island, our apartment, I don’t care. I’m with you Asami, let’s just go.” Korra responds, irritated.

Korra stomped out of the building enraged. “Excuse me,” Asami whispered as she passed by Zhu Li; following Korra into the parking lot. Asami opened the car door and sat in the driver’s seat. Korra followed and slammed the door. They quickly glanced at each other and drove off.

Once they got to the Air Temple Island, they were immediately greeted by Tenzin. “Did you guys-”

“Yes, we did.” Korra interrupts. “Can we- can we stay with...you guys?” Asami asks after some silence.

“Of course!” Tenzin replies, an awkward smile plastered on his face.

Inside the house Pema prepared dinner. “Korra! Asami! You guys are here!” Ikki said running towards the girls. “Korra and Asami?!” Meelo shouted just noticing them. “You guys are so loud,” Jinora said joining in.

“Hey guys,” Asami said waving. “Not to be rude, but why are you guys here?” Jinora asked. “Umm,” Korra glanced at Asami, “It’s a long story.”

“...Okayy,” Jinora replied. Pema left the house. “Hi girls! Would you two like some dinner?” She asked. “Yes Pema, thank you,” Asami said cheerfully. The girls followed her into the dining room. A delicious array of vegetarian food was placed on the table.

Dinner was relatively normal some awkward moments, but normal. That was until Varrick came bursting through the door.

“LESBIANS!” Varrick said pointing towards Asami and Korra. Everyone’s heads whipped around to look at the girls. “I have been looking for you gals ALL DAY.” He exclaims, “I saw the posters and the movers!”

“Varrick, who let you in the house?” Tenzin asks. “Unrelated. Zhu Li! We need to sort this out immediately. I’ve seen all the posters and the movers.” Varrick shouts, ignoring Tenzin’s question. Zhu Li walks through the door. “Varrick, stop yelling.” She says impatiently. “Do you want to join us for dinner first?” Pema states, clearly wanting this conversation to wait. “Yes please! Zhu Li! Do the-” Varrick responds, cutting himself off. Zhu Li side-eyed him. “I already ate. I’ll just wait till after dinner.” Zhu Li says coolly.

“Hey, Varrick and Zhu Li!” Meelo yelled, “Why are you guys here?”

“Not now kiddo! These steamed buns your mom made are fantastic!” Varrick responded. Stuffing his face.

After dinner, Tenzin led the kids to bed. “What??? It’s not fair. I wanna hang out with everyone.” Ikki whined. “We need to talk about boring adult stuff. Run along now.” Ikki groaned all the way down the hall.

Once they were gone the adults began talking.

___________________________________________________

Tenzin, Pema, Asami, Korra, Zhu Li and Varrick all sat around the table.

Varrick starts, “So, what are you gals going to about these posters?” “I- I don’t know...” Asami responds. “Well, I say you should deny it,” Varrick says casually as if he were talking about the weather. “I hate to say it, but I agree with Varrick. We don’t want to ruin Zhu Li’s campaign.” Tenzin agrees.

“I’ve been thinking about it, and I think you guys should confirm your relationship. We could make that part of our campaign.” Zhu Li interrupts. Everyone’s heads whip around to face her. “What?” Tenzin and Varrick said in unison. A look of contemplation crossed Varrick’s face. “New idea! This could be great! Our slogan: ‘Zhu Li: for every citizen of Republic City. I can see it in the stars!” Varrick exclaimed making large gestures with his arms.

Tenzin starts, “I still don’t know, I mean-” He’s interrupted by a sudden knock at the door. “I’ll get it!” Pema says. She opens the door to an awkward-looking pair of brothers. “Hi Mako, Bolin, why don’t you come in?” Pema asks. “Uh, sure Pema, hope we’re not interrupting,” Mako responds.

“Hey Mako, Bolin, I already know why you guys are here,” Tenzin says. “Hey Tenzin,” Bolin responds. “Well, you two are adults; what do you think Asami and Korra should do?” Tenzin asks. “Umm, I guess they should just wait till it dies down. It’s no one's business anyway.” Bolin responds. “Yeah, I uh, think so too,” Mako adds.

Korra abruptly stood up from the table and stomped off grumbling under her breath. “Everyone making decisions for me. Stupid...”

“I’m going to go as well,” Asami started walking in the opposite direction. Without any words, Pema stood up and followed Korra. Outside in the garden, Korra sat on a bench. Hearing footsteps she quickly swiped away her tears. “Hey...how are you doing Korra?” Pema asked. “Just fine.” She responded sarcastically. “Hey, you can talk to me if you like. I know Tenzin’s... overwhelming, but he means well.” Pema says. “Yeah, whatever.” Korra starts, “I mean I know he just wants to keep me safe, but I don’t want everyone to make decisions for me.”

“I just want to live with my girlfriend. I don’t want to deal with this. I don’t want our relationship to be political.” Korra finishes. “You’re right. You shouldn’t have to do anything you don’t want to, but sadly your choice was taken away from you. And you have to make a decision.” Pema says, stroking Korra’s back. “You can advocate for others like you, or you could lay low. Do whatever makes you comfortable. You have to consider what Asami wants too.”

Korra sat in silence contemplating. She pursed her lips then began speaking again. “I’ll go talk with Asami.”

Notes:

The next chapter will be out soon; since school is ending soon. Anyway, tell me if this chapter was too long.

Chapter 3: Sorting things out

Chapter Text

Korra knocked at the door. “Hey...Asami,” She started. She heard some shuffling behind the door and prepared herself. “Hey,” Asami said opening the door. Korra entered the guest room and sat on the bed. “About the papers...” Korra started, “What do you want to do..?” “I- I don’t know. You guys- Team Avatar were some of my firsts. My first real friends. My first boyfriend.” Asami looks at Korra, “My- My first girlfriend.”

“I just want to be with you. Without the public breathing down our necks. I’m not embarrassed to be with you. People judged me every day when they found out my father was an Equalist. But you stayed by my side. So, whatever you want to do; I’ll go with it.”

Korra stares at her, quickly wiping a tear away. “But Asami, I don’t want to make the decision all by myself. This is a big decision. I’m the Avatar, this changes how I’ll be treated. Forever. I want you to be by my side. I hate to admit it, but I’m scared to do this by myself.”

Asami looks at her with wide eyes. “Well, if it’s about what I’m comfortable with, then I just want to tell the truth, I’ve been lied to and left so many times.” Korra frowns in guilt. “I don’t want to be apart of politics, but if you do then I’ll consider it.”

Korra holds her hand with firmness. “Asami,” Korra says starts, “I don’t want to be a part of politics either. But I want to get married. I don’t want anyone else to go through the judgement you went through, the judgement I went through.”

Asami pursed her lips in contemplation. “I’ll think about it.”

“Great!” Korra replied. She gave her a kiss on the lips. Blush coated the girl’s cheeks as they stared into each other’s eyes. “Oh? Getting frisky, are we?” Asami said. The butterflies of nervousness that had once filled their stomachs soon turned into butterflies of anticipation. Asami’s hand was warm in Korra’s. Asami grabbed a blanket and pulled it around the two of them.

“Are you cold?” Asami asks with a smirk. “I’m from the south pole.” Korra replied rolling her eyes. Korra felt the soft comforter underneath them shift as she scooted towards the green-eyed girl. Korra slowly closed her eyes, and laid he head down on Asami’s shoulder. The girls stayed like that for a while; a sense of trust strengthening around them.

“We’re going to be alright.”

Chapter Text

The next morning Mako and Bolin knocked on Asami’s door. Bolin opened the door, slightly surprised to see Korra laying in Asami’s bed. “Hey, guys...” Mako said meekly, unsure of what he should say. “Pema made breakfast,” Bolin added. Asami, half asleep, replied, “We’ll go eat soon.”

“Ten more minutes...” Korra groaned, groggily.

“Okay! See you guys soon.” Bolin said. He then left the doorframe and skipped into the hallway. Mako was still in the room. Unsure of what to say. Nervously he asked, “Can we talk later...about, y’know...”

Asami and Korra answer at the same time, “Sure.”

“O-Okay, I’ll get going...” Mako stuttered out. He almost hit his head on the doorframe as he stumbled out of the room. The two girls looked at each other for a couple of seconds, then burst out laughing. Asami said, “Haha, he’s so nervous!”

“Honestly! Doesn’t help that we both dated him.” Korra exclaimed holding her stomach. “C’mon let’s go eat.” She continued. Korra got up and stretched her arms. Eyes squinting at the open window. Asami yawned started brushing her hair. Once they were up and energized the girls began to walk over to the dining room.

Meelo and Ikki were already at the table waiting impatiently while Pema set out the food. Tenzin is also there cleaning up the mess Pema made while cooking. Tenzin looks at Korra and Asami for a brief moment then quickly averts his gaze. Guess he needs more time to warm up to them. “Good morning!” Asami said. She had always been quite the morning person. “Good morning.” Everyone murmured out. “Korra, Asami, would you girls like to join us for breakfast?” “Yeah,” Korra replied. They quickly ate breakfast before Korra excused herself from the table. “I’ll get going as well, thank you Pema,” Asami added.

They left the room and went to the gardens. Zhu Li was sitting on a bench reading a poem. “Hey, Zhu Li.” Korra started, “We’d like to confirm our relationship. If it’d be okay with you.” The determination slowly waning. “Are you sure?” Zhu Li asked. “You gals don’t have to if you don’t want to. This is a bigger decision than you think.”

There. And just like that, all Korra’s resolve was gone. What was she thinking?! She’s proud of her relationship with Asami. She really is. But having people prodding around her life. Her love. Korra didn’t know if she could do it. But... Korra was more than a girl she was the Avatar she had more responsibility than everyone else. She couldn’t ponder forever.

“I’ll do it,” Asami said, certainty grounded in her voice. She grabbed Korra’s hand firmly. The avatar looked up at her in surprise. “We’ll do it,” Korra added. Together.

“That’s great!” Varrick exclaimed jumping out the bushes. “GAH!” Korra yelped, startled by the man with twigs in his hair. “You were listening?!” Asami yelled pointing her finger at the businessman.

“Of course! I never go anywhere without my assist- er, wife!”

Zhu Li sent an icy glare his way.

“Well since you girls have made up your mind let’s get this show on a roll. Announcement form: Mover! We’re going to make a commershan to announce y’alls relationship!”

“Commershan?” Korra asked.

Varrick “A short promotional mover. Duh.”

“Uh-huh... I’m not sure this is the right way to do this though. How about... a speech?” Asami recommended.

“Sure, if you want to be boring. Don’t you want to make a statement that’s flashy?”

“Nah, I think we’ll stick with boring.” Korra said, not wanting this ‘commershan’ thing to go on any longer.

“Well, now that that’s decided,” Zhu Li stated, “Let’s write this speech.”

Notes:

Commershan= Commercial

Thanks for reading! <3

Chapter 5: Update

Chapter Text

Okay, so I know I haven’t been consistent with updates. At all. And I’m sorry. This is my first fic and I wanted to write something I wanted to read. So to better negate this, I will be turning this fic into a oneshot! I’ll be back as soon as I get the motivation. Sorry once again. xx

Notes:

Tysm for reading! Sorry this was short I didn't want to write too much. (I have a bad habit) The next chapter will probably be out soon if I'm not busy. School is ending soon so I probably will have the time to post.
