Notes:

I heard the news today

That you’re not mine to keep

***

hello hello! This is my story for the Lunoct Big Bang!! I was honored to be able to partner up with mysteriousbean5, who was amazingly supportive as I worked through this story and made the gorgeous art piece you'll see at the start.

This story was a dream for me to create, because to me it fit Luna and Noct's canon fate and tragedy so well. I hope you enjoy!

I do want to be up front with you all though that this story follows the original, canon ending of Swan Lake, which means for this story canon character deaths. If you are not here for that, I totally get it.

And lastly, shout out to the mods running the event, and to Sanj for being so supportive of my wild ideas. <3

Our sources we have been able to reach have said Galahad has been all but destroyed. The soldiers we had heard rumors of from the attacks on the borders of Niflheim are real - men made of machine, silent warriors who do not relent.

Though much of the damage is not from them. Most was from a fire that engulfed much of the land, brought on it seemed by Ifrit himself - not an expression, but the Astral himself. We are still looking into this report to ascertain exactly what this means.

Our advice to all others right now is to avoid a conflict with the Emperor at all costs. It is better to negotiate aut —

Regis tossed the letter onto his desk and rubbed at his eyes. He leaned back in his chair and took a deep breath before finally looking at Clarus, who stood near the door, stoic and unbreaking as always. And with more information, Regis was sure. But he was hesitant to ask for more when this was already bad news enough.

To know that somehow Emperor Aldercapt had Ifrit himself fighting in this war only made the already difficult situation even more dire. He, by the advice as well of his council, had thought to not get involved when the battles were within Niflheim’s borders, even though it was terrible to watch, even though their actions were inhumane by all accounts.

But with Niflheim taking Galahad, all treaties with both kingdoms were off the table. All attempts at staying ‘out of it’ evaporated the same as the city by Ifrit’s flames.

Regis needed to know who his allies still were - though there were few left. Fear of the Emperor grew each day. He needed to prepare like he should have been all along for the inevitable fight.

He reached behind him for his carafe of bourbon - he didn’t usually like it neat, but he wasn’t in the mood to call for ice and also didn’t want to leave the office with everything going through his mind. Clarus watched him, but he knew wouldn’t judge him for the early hour. “What of Accordo?

“They have prepared for a siege, but my men on the inside whisper that Queen Claustra will bend quickly to Emperor Aldercapt however she can to preserve their autonomy.”

He poured a little more than a usual drink for him and lifted the glass. “We could have used their naval military.”

Clarus stepped closer, silent as Regis took a large sip of his drink. But his expression said everything Regis already knew.

Even with Accordo, their forces would still be a small drop in the bucket against Niflheim, they both knew that. It was exactly why Accordo would do everything in their power not to fight. Galahad sent the exact message that Aldercapt was going for.

Resist and be destroyed.

But there was another kingdom that perhaps could still be trusted. Regis took another sip, trying not to take it all in one go despite how much he wanted to slam it back and pour more. “What of Tenebrae?”

Clarus brightened up a little, as much as he would allow himself. “They will not break their word, we have the utmost faith in the message we have received, that they will not side with the Emperor.”

Regis sighed. “Good.” That was good. Together, their armies could hold Niflheim at their borders. But separately they would all be destroyed. They had to ensure their kingdoms did not end here. He set down the glass to keep himself from reaching back for the carafe. He had things to do. Wallowing would solve nothing.

“I must send Queen Sylva an urgent letter, to propose our alliance officially. And I need an emergency meeting with the Council after that, to discuss our next steps to protect Lucis.”

Clarus bowed. “I’ll go get Scientia.” He turned and exited, while Regis pulled out a paper and pen, the weight of everything resting heavily on his hand as the Ring of Lucis gleamed up at him.

“It is almost too perfect, isn’t it?” Sylva said between sips of tea.

“It is the will of the Astrals,” Regis tapped the small plate with his spoon. “They have blessed this union.”

She uttered a small laugh. “You always surprise me with your dedication to the gods,”

“I have little else I can believe in, anymore.” He watched Noctis, the son he had to raise in this world where an army was always ready to destroy them all, the son he had to raise in this world without his mother. Six years old and already had known so much pain in his life.

“We have both handled our lots in life a little different, I suppose.” Sylva followed his gaze over to Noctis and Lunafreya as they sat at their own smaller table, pretending to have tea.

Luna was a few years older than the young Prince, but it was obvious her care for him without even knowing what her mother had promised, before she was even born.

The same promise Regis and Aulea had made for their son. Soon they would be able to tell them their fate, and he hoped they would accept it, their friendship easily blossoming into something deeper as they grew older. They already had much in common just with how their lives had started out, and their journey forward would surely be very similar. It was hard, for people of their stature, to have others to lean on who fully understood the weight of their crowns.

He and Sylva, they both had to do what was right for their children, for their futures and for the future of their kingdoms.

Regis looked to Sylva, his confidant and one of the few who understood his plight. “I am glad to have known you.”

“And I you.”

“We’re ready, Your Majesty.”

Regis smiled down at Noctis, who fidgeted with the gold sash draped from his shoulder across his small chest. “You ready, son?”

Noctis nodded firmly. “Is Luna out there? Can we play after?”

“Of course, I’ll make sure of it.”

Noctis smiled and took Regis’s hand as they walked out of the small waiting room and to the chapel in the Citadel. This wasn’t intended to be a big ceremony, so the room was fairly empty. The court photographer was there to share a photo with the news outlets, and the royal court of course was there.

Queen Sylva, Princess Lunafreya, and Prince Ravus stood at the altar with the high priest. Regis led Noctis to them, and stood on the other side, facing the three of them.

The priest motioned and Noctis and Lunafreya stepped towards each other, then faced the priest. Lunafreya, aged 14, had all the poise already of a queen. Perhaps her lineage and connection to the Astrals helped her be at ease with the decisions being made about her future.

Noctis was...still a young boy. A ten-year-old who just wanted to go play with his friend. Who toyed with the hem of the sash, while keeping his focus up at the priest.

“Today, before the gods, we acknowledge this sacred betrothal that will join two kingdoms who are dedicated to their words. Who speaks for the lady?”

“I, Queen Sylva.”

“And who for the lord?”

“I, King Regis.” Noctis glanced at him from the corner of his eyes, and Regis tried his best not to smile. But he failed, a little corner of his mouth tilting up, and Noctis grinned and looked back to the priest.

The priest didn’t acknowledge Noctis looking away if he had noticed. “As these two are yet of age to make this promise on their own, you both are acting as the bearers of the weight of this contract, and it is your responsibility to uphold this arrangement in the eyes of the gods. If they do not commit once they have both reached of age, you will have broken the bond with the Astrals.”

Regis and Sylva lowered their heads in acknowledgement. Betrothals of this magnitude of seriousness were not so common anymore. Getting priests and gods involved for an engagement, one that could as far as anyone know crumble, was a lot more work and anxiety than most would entertain.

But this was to be the first moment where Tenebrae and Lucis would tell Niflheim Not us. And that message needed to be sent loud and clear. And revealing this engagement that would take place ten years from now, it was one way which they were showing this to all of Eos.

“I bear witness to your solemn proposal,” the priest raised both his hands once more, “and I declare that the gods have blessed this union.”

At that, two more priests stepped up, each with crowns made of sylleblossoms and lilies, and placed them on Noctis and Lunafreya. The ribbons hanging off the crowns were tied to each other, to represent them being bound to one another.

Luna reached out and took Noctis’s hand in his.

“May the gods bless your bodies and souls. May they guard you all the days of your life.”

“Mother!” Lunafreya screamed out and tried to run forward, but Ravus pulled her in the opposite direction.

“We have to go!” He shouted as he tugged her arm.

She wouldn’t have it. Their home was burning, and their mother was still in there. “We have to save her!”

Ravus pulled again, harder this time, until Lunafreya’s back pressed to his chest and he could wrap both arms around her. “She would say our duty is to get out alive!”

Lunafreya choked on tears and smoke as she looked down the long hallway. Her mother was fighting off a man who held lightning in his hands and was surrounded by weapons, so similar to how she had heard the Lucis kings fought, but it didn’t make sense. There was no way their mother could survive…

“Sister,” Ravus whispered against her ear, his voice rough from screaming and breathing in the fiery air. “We must. Go.”

Lunafreya nodded, and was released - they joined hands and ran. Rubble and fire proved to be an obstacle with every turn until somehow, they managed to make it out the castle walls. They ran and ran, until the heat was no longer on their back.

When Lunafreya stopped and turned to look behind them, she froze. “Ravus…”

He turned as well, and blinked up at the horrible sight. Their home was completely in flames. She could hear screams inside of those who were trapped. And no sign of her mother having made it out. They were alone.

“Sister,” Ravus gripped her arm, “Lunafreya we have to go — “

“Now now,” a voice boomed around them. Ravus immediately wrapped his arms around her, and she found she couldn’t fight it this time. “You would abandon dear mummy in her time of need?”

Out of the flames, the man who had been fighting walked through the gates with their mother in his grip. She was badly hurt, blood soaking an arm and cuts up her legs and chest, her dress torn in places and burned in others.

“Please, let us go!” Lunafreya shouted. “We will go into hiding; we’ll never bother you.”

“Silly girl,” the man threw their mother down to the ground once they were close enough. Lunafreya made to go to her, but Ravus held her back.

“Don’t, it has to be a trap.” He whispered. Her mother lay still where she landed, face down and hands clawing into the dirt.

Tears streamed down Lunafreya’s cheeks. Her mother was the most elegant, beautiful person she’d ever known. This was not the fate she deserved.

“I am afraid you are all a part of a much, much bigger plan.” The man raised one arm, and Luna saw now that it looked to be shaped like a wing - a huge black wing, instead of a human arm.

“Get back!” Ravus shouted, and then the world went dark.

~Present Day~

Noctis somehow managed to sneak away from his dad’s side to get some air out on one of the balconies that wrapped around the rooftop of the Citadel. Leaning against the banister, he looked back inside to where the party - his party - continued on. He clung to the cold railing to catch his breath and slow his heartbeat.

That didn't help. So, he closed his eyes and turned to face away from the ballroom. He opened his eyes and stared out over the city, focusing on the lights that flickered off in the distance. He hadn’t thought this would be so...hard.

“There you are,” a low voice spoke, still at a distance behind him.

Noctis held still in order to not show any sign of disappointment that he had been found. Though if anyone would be able to, it was them of course.

“Just needed some air.” When he turned, his friends were all there in front of him. Prompto smiled wide, his uniform a bit messy from dancing, while Ignis and Gladio both looked concerned as they stepped closer.

“You know the announcement is to happen soon.” Ignis reached out to adjust the clasp of Noct’s cloak and brushed at his shoulder.

Noctis winced at the unnecessary reminder of his fate. “I know.”

Gladio huffed. “You’re expected to be there.”

Noctis couldn’t help rolling his eyes. “I know, I know.”

“Come on,” Prompto hopped forward and leaned on the railing next to him. He shook Noctis by the arm, and Ignis swatted at him and continued fussing over Noctis. “aren't you excited? It’s time to finally get you hitched.”

“Prompto,” Ignis warned.

“It's fine.” Noct waved Ignis off and he finally relented, and took up standing on the other side of Noctis against the railing.

“I’m fine. Just. thinking.”

Ignis touched his shoulder. “You know Lady Lunafreya would want you to be happy, Noct.”

“I know, it’s just…” He wasn’t even sure how to put into words everything he was feeling. Like all the years he had worked through the grief had not even happened, that somehow all of this made the wounds feel as fresh as the day they heard Tenebrae fell, the day they heard that no one survived the siege by Niflheim. But instead, he settled on “I didn’t expect everyone to be talking about me. Or her. I figured they would focus on...the others.”

“It is only natural to talk about the prince and future king.”

Noctis looked back over the city - it was normal to talk about him, but to talk about Luna felt wrong. Even though they had been betrothed at a young age, Noctis hadn’t minded. He had always liked Luna and enjoyed their time together. But that wasn't why everyone talked about her of course. They only focused on the tragedy, and it was also not just the tragedy of what happened to her, to Tenebrae, to her family. It was always weirdly couched in with how tragic it was that she wouldn’t be queen one day.

That was what got to Noctis. Luna was more than her engagement to him. But few knew her enough to understand that.

“Hey,” Prompto bumped Noctis in the side, and he startled enough to turn back to face the balcony. Prompto waved a hand in front of his face. “Eos to Noct.”

“Sorry, sorry. Just a lot on my mind.”

“You know what will cheer you up? Dancing!” Prompto grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him back towards the ballroom, with Ignis and Gladio behind them. Noctis managed to put on a fake smile as they drew closer and others who had stepped outside for a moment of respite saw them approaching, turning to smile and bow to Noctis.

Despite how he felt, Noctis would have to find a way to move on from what his future was supposed to have been, to not let the stories that would probably forever haunt him get under his skin. He had been too young when Niflheim attacked Tenebrae to really know how he felt about Luna aside as just a friend that he was always excited to see, but he had felt her loss deeply, and yet he hadn’t really been able to do anything to move past it.

And now he was expected to just. Marry someone else.

Prompto released Noctis before walking through the door, and fell behind with Gladio and Ignis.

He walked past his friends, knowing they would follow, and went back through the large double doors and into the music, the lights, everything. Ignoring the way people watched him and spoke behind gloves hands to each other as he passed, he made his way towards the center of the room, where his dad sat at the head of a long table and watched the room.

“Ah Noctis, there you are. I was getting worried you’d gotten cold feet already, and your birthday celebration has hardly started.” His dad rose carefully, a steady hand bracing him on the table. He had opted not to have his cane tonight, which had irritated Noctis, more that his dad felt he had to hide the fact he was aging more than anything.

“I’m ready,” Noctis fell in line with his dad as they walked towards the small riser that had been set up next to the table so that the whole room could see them when speaking.

The King lowered his voice. “Once I do this, the night will be spent speaking with potential suitors, or their parents.”

“I know.” Noctis cleared his throat when his dad raised an eyebrow at him. “I mean I understand. Let’s just get it over with.”

His dad didn’t chide him, thankfully. Instead he looked to Ignis, who made a motion to the musicians. The room went quiet as the music stopped. In one moment, his dad became the King - such a subtle shift in how he stood that Noctis wasn’t sure he would ever be able to mimic.

“Good evening, everyone. Thank you for coming together to celebrate my son’s birth.”

The room erupted in applause and cheers. Noctis politely bowed his head with a smile, but kept his eyes looking over the crowd instead of making eye contact with anyone. He wasn’t ready to look these people in the face, not yet. Not when he knew what they would all be coming to him for.

His dad continued. “Not only is it Prince Noctis’s birthday, but it is also of course the start of an exciting journey - one where the Prince will search for his future partner to lead our kingdom forward when I am gone.”

Noctis tightened his jaw to keep from making a face at that. He didn’t like to think about his dad no longer being there. It seemed an impossible reality.

“Tonight, we officially agree to speak with potential suitors or their representatives who are here. And in a week’s time, we will begin the courtship process, where the Prince will officially meet suitors in a series of masquerades.”

Another round of applause. Noctis bowed to the crowd, one hand over his heart. He tried not to notice the way so many of them looked at him. They had all known without it needing to be announced that Noctis would be starting to look for a partner, it was the normal order of things when the heir was not previously betrothed. It felt wrong that these people would revel in the idea that Noctis was available, considering what had led to this moment.

But Noctis kept his smile up as Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto assisted with getting folks who wanted time with the king and prince noted down - they were given numbers, and when it was their time someone would find them, so that they weren’t watching in line breathing down each other’s necks.

Noctis was only relieved that he didn't have to dance with anyone, yet.

“I don’t want to meet anyone ever again,” Noctis collapsed onto his bed late that night. He couldn't be asked to even take off his cloak. “I’m pretty sure I sprained something in my back bowing so much.”

The bed dipped. When Noctis opened one eye Prompto had stretched out alongside him and was all smiles and excitement. At least someone was stoked.

“Okay but. Important. There were a lot of pretty people there. How are you gonna choose?”

Noctis groaned. “I don't want to.”

“There will be masquerades until a partner is chosen, so you would only be putting yourself through more of this, as you put it, torture.” Ignis leaned over him, “and really Noct, could you please not wrinkle your coat any more than it already is.”

He grumbled. “I have a week before I have to worry about it again.”

“You know we have much to do to prepare, before then.”

Noctis whined louder and covered his face with his arms. “Can’t I get like. One day off.”

There were a few beats of silence. When Noctis peeked out to see if anyone was still there, the other three were huddled close together whispering. That usually wasn’t a good sign.

“Guys?”

They all snapped their heads to look down at him. Prompto grinned like a dork. “Wanna go camping?”

Noctis wasn’t going to ask how Ignis and Gladio managed to get permission to leave the Citadel grounds, let alone the city of Insomnia, during a time when the whole of Lucis was looking to try to get in good with Noctis. Not to mention the always just there fear of a war coming to their borders.

Somehow they did it, and he was grateful.

He dozed off every now and then as he watched the scenery change out the window of the Regalia. Prompto was going on excitedly, taking photos, while Gladio read and Ignis politely kept conversation. After several hours, they pulled over and Noctis looked around groggily.

“We’re here?”

“Yup, come on out princess.”

He stuck his tongue out at Gladio as he did so, stretching and looking around. It wasn’t much to look at really - he had limited time out of the city aside from Tenebrae, but even to him it seemed a little...dull. They were parked next to a large elevated flat bit of rock, and across the way was a mess of low dark trees and bushes. The air was muggy, hot, and gross.

Noctis couldn’t help sounding a little disappointed. He didn’t get to leave the castle grounds often, so doing so for someplace that wasn’t exactly best suited for him made it feel like the trip wasn’t worth it. “We drove all the way out here for this place?”

As if sensing his uncertainty, Gladio threw an arm around his shoulders and shook him a few times. “Well, this place is supposedly home to the Liege of the Lake.”

“Liege huh? Tell me more.”

Prompto appeared on his other side and pulled him away from Gladio, off the road. “Ya! No one’s ever reeled it in.”

“Hmm well I guess I’m intrigued.” He played it cool just to annoy his friends a little. They knew he was excited - this was exactly what he needed what now. He continued walking in the direction of the water - he could see bits of the lake through the trees and rocks.

Only Prompto followed though, and when Noctis realized this, he turned and saw that Ignis and Gladio were still unloading things from the regalia.

“Well? Wanna go catch this sucker?”

“Ah,” Gladio hoisted the tent over his shoulders. “His Lordship appears only at dawn. Guess you’ll have to help us set camp.”

That made Noctis turn right back around real fast. “Dawn? I thought this was supposed to be a relaxing trip!”

“Don’t worry, you’ll be sleeping much earlier than your usual time. It shouldn't feel so terrible.”

“Ignis you’re killing me here.”

“Grab the cooler and get over here!” Gladio was already hiking up a small path to the flat rock they would be camping on.

With a groan Noctis walked back to the car and lugged the cooler out of the trunk, following Ignis and Prompto up to the haven.

It wasn’t long before Noctis had managed to fuss up the set up bad enough that he was shooed off from trying to help any further. Noctis took the chance to step away and go towards the lake. He saw a small dock that was clearly worn by age. He walked down it, listening to the way his steps sounded on the old wood. Stopping at the edge he looked out over the lake - an eerie mist hung over the area, but the water was still, and it was quiet.

That was really what Noctis needed right then. He took off his shoes and socks and sat down, leaning against one of the posts.

He summoned his fishing pole and got one of his lures secured, and tossed it out into the water. He wasn’t sure anything would be biting since the sun was bearing down, but he didn't want to wait for the opportunity.

He hadn’t realized he’d fallen asleep until the sound of water woke him. It wasn’t a bite on his line though. He looked around and saw walking along the shore two Daggerquills, or at least that’s what he thought they were. They were so white it was almost blinding, and they looked regal as they stilled when they saw him move, their necks stretched out long as if about to take off. It was different behavior than what he had ever seen of the creatures that were known for being aggressive and territorial - and also who mostly traveled in large flocks.

When he sat up, they froze, each with one delicate foot poised in the air as if about to take flight.

Noctis blinked a few times, and then set his pole down. “Hey there, you're fine. I won't hurt you.”

The birds only blinked. Which, what was he expecting, anyways? As he turned his attention back to fishing, the smaller of the two flew up to the dock. Noct froze as it approached him, remembering many a time he had been chased by Daggerquills when he was a boy.

Despite that memory, Noctis held out his hand, palm up, unsure what he could even offer the bird or why it would be coming over to him. It stepped forward tentatively, and at Noct’s hand inspected it, tilting its head to the side to look proper.

Noctis noticed that around the top of the head there were some soft blue patterns. It was overall a strange coloring he had never seen before in any kind of bird.

It leaned forward, dropping its beak onto Noctis’s palm.

He laughed softly. “I don't have any snacks on me, sorry.”

It made a chirping kind of sound. The other bird did as well, though louder and sounding much more irritated. The one with him fluffed its wings up, and then it flew up, and away. The other followed.

Noctis watched after them, unsure why he felt sad that they had gone.

He distracted himself fishing once more, and actually managed to catch enough to bring back to the campsite for dinner.

“Ah, you didn’t do so poorly did you,” Ignis commented as he took the cooler of fish from Noctis.

“Right? Not bad for a sheltered prince.”

They all chuckled and Noctis settled into one of the chairs placed around the small campfire. He looked up at the darkening sky and took it all in - the silence, the soft sounds of nature around them, soft clinking of metal as Ignis worked to prepare dinner.

His thoughts drifted back to the Daggerquills he had seen.

“Daggerquills mean something, right?”

Gladio looked up from his book. “You mean like religiously?”

“I guess,” Noctis shrugged, “something like that right?”

“Ya, usually a sign of luck.”

Noctis hummed and looked back up at the sky, watching as the first stars began to appear.

It was still dark when Noctis found himself somehow awake. The sun hadn’t started to come up yet - so despite his crankiness at the hour he decided he might as well wake up and start fishing for the Liege of the Lake.

He’d rather do it when the others weren’t looking anyways, especially if the fish was tough to catch. No reason to have the peanut gallery behind him making him stressed out, shouting at when to reel and when to loosen his grip, all that.

He bundled up in his big heavy jacket and gloves, and got himself settled. It was quiet, aside from the sounds of frogs croaking every now and again, and a fish gulping at the surface of the water.

It was nice.

He wasn’t sitting on the dock for long before he heard footsteps approaching from behind him. He must have woken someone up, damn.

“Hey, sorry did I wake you,” he turned and -

It was not one of the guys.

It was a woman, standing just a few feet away. Her blue eyes were wide and framed by platinum blonde hair, and she wore a flowing white dress that glowed in the moonlight.

Noctis felt a pull in his chest immediately.

“Who…” he set his pole down slowly and stood. Something told him not to startle her, not to let her leave. But she took a step back and looked around, as if just realizing where she was. “It’s okay, are you lost?”

She looked behind her, then back to Noctis. As he walked towards her, he began to feel like she looked familiar. but...

He takes a step forward, and she steps backwards and then is off, running away and back into the forest. It almost looks like she leaves a trail of white light behind her.

“Hey, wait!” Noctis ran to the end of the dock, but no further, before she had vanished from his sight.

His heart hammered in his chest. Those eyes, the hair. Even her face, there was a sense of familiarity, even in just those few seconds. He would have sworn…even though it was impossible...

...she looked like Luna.

He stayed at the dock until the sky began to turn a soft pink on the horizon, in case she would return. He wondered if he had been dreaming, or hallucinating? Sleep walking? She had looked ethereal, and to think that she would be there, in Vesperpool, of all places, was like something out of a silly fantasy.

But still, Noctis stayed there until sunlight began to dissipate the fog along the water.

He finally packed up everything and went back to their campsite, trying to shake off the strange feeling and pass off what happened as a trick of his imagination.

“You think I can get it?” He could hear Prompto as he approached camp, and hear the sounds of a fire popping. Clearly they hadn’t waited on him for breakfast, prince or no.

“If you hush, ya.” Gladio hissed low.

Noctis stepped up in time to see Gladio and Prompto at the opposite edge of the campsite, both lying on their stomachs. Prompto had a crossbow set across his arms and aiming down below them.

“Hey guys, what’s up?”

“Shh!” Prompto waved his hand at Noctis without looking back at him. “Trying to get us breakfast. We needed a backup in case fishing was a bust.”

“Huh?” He made his way across to them and saw what they were focused on. Perched just on some rocks beside their camp was…

a white Daggerquill, unknowingly searching the crevices for some food. Once again Noctis felt that strange pull - it had to be the same ones he saw at the water the day before. There was no way there could be more, and that he would see them all within a day of each other.

“Hey,” he shouted loudly on purpose. The bird lifted its head up and looked towards them.

“Noct!!” Prompto whined, “I was about to get it!”

“It’s all bone anyways,” he tried to reason as he walked towards the edge of the rock. He crouched down to the ground. “Got any bread?”

“Bread?”

“To feed it.”

“Do not give it bread,” Ignis came up behind them, “here, some grapes should suffice.”

Noctis took them in his hand. Prompto and Gladio watched Noctis like he was a little crazy.

Maybe he was. He had been hunting his whole life and never once stopped to think about killing a bird for sport, or food. But he couldn’t help but recognize the sensation from the day before, when he saw the birds by the water.

“Here ya go,” Noctis held out his hand to show the bird the grapes.

“Dude, it’s not gonna eat out your hand when it just busted us trying to shoot it.”

“We’ll see,” he stayed still as the Daggerquill stepped along the rocks, darting its head around as it moved, and then in a graceful movement leapt up to fly towards Noctis. He fell back on his ass, but kept his hand outstretched, and the bird was instantly at his side eating the grapes.

Prompto and Gladio stared with wide eyes. “Whoa,”

“You hungry?” Noctis laughed as the bird finished the grapes and looked up at him. This close and in the light, he could see better than he had the day before. The bird had blue eyes, and what appeared to be a crescent moon shaped mark just above its beak.

“Never seen anything quite like you before,” he muttered. The bird pecked at his hand. “Sorry, I can’t feed you everything.”

The bird gave him one more look, and then in the distance he could hear another Daggerquill calling out. It flew up into the air, and headed in that direction, without even a second glance towards Noctis or the others.

He blinked and tried not to feel like he’d just been rejected. Noctis got up and wiped his hands on his pants.

“Dude…how did you know it would eat from your hand?”

“I didn’t exactly...but.” He looked in the direction it flew off to. “I saw two white Daggerquills yesterday, thought this might have been one of them.”

“Weird,” Gladio had stood and was looking in the direction it had flown. “They’re usually solitary aside from mating season.”

“Maybe these ones were just lonely.”

Something bothered Noctis about the birds, but he couldn’t quite place it. Almost like there was something off, eerie about them. But then his stomach grumbled, and he remembered he’d been up since before sunrise.

Ignis clearly read his mind. “Come get some food and coffee while it’s warm,”

“Ya, you won’t get the Liege but can still get some fishing done before we leave.”

“You sure we can’t stay another night?”

“You know we can’t, Noct, we have too much to prepare.”

“Fine,” he slumped into one of the chairs around the fire and took the cup of coffee ignis offered. Well mostly sugar and cream, but the sugar would be enough to keep him going.

The others gathered around the small fire and Ignis handed out plates of potatoes, eggs, and bacon. And then Gladio taught them how to take biscuit dough and wrap them around skewers to cook them over the fire. It was a nice time, to be out and away from all the responsibility that laid before him back home, and what the week was about to bring. He would have few days like this left with his friends.

And still, Noctis couldn’t stop looking out in the direction of the water, curious if he would see the Daggerquills, or the woman, again before they left.

They got back just before sunset, and so Noctis took a walk around the castle grounds to savor a few more moments of solitude before dinner. There was a small lake near the edge before the forest that he used to hang out at as a boy, but hadn’t in many years. He had so many memories of him and Luna there, and it hurt still, sometimes, knowing she was gone forever.

He thought about the woman he saw the night before - clearly he had been imagining things to see someone who looked so much like Luna would have had she not died, had she grown up alongside him. Clearly all this talk of betrothals and balls just had gotten to Noctis, and he was working through his grief.

He sat on the small dock and picked at the grass poking out between the boards. The place needed maintenance, but he was sure no one really bothered since he didn’t come around here. Maybe he would start keeping it up, something to distract him from the duties at home, and from the future he wasn’t looking forward to.

Picking a new bride felt so wrong; he couldn’t shake it.

He heard a splash and looked over to see in the distance birds on the water. He thought they might be Daggerquills as well by their shape, but he couldn’t be sure. And besides, there was no way the same birds would be there that he had seen all the way out in Vesperpool.

Standing up, he tucked his hands into his pockets and looked out over the still water at the sun vanishing behind the horizon. A strange sense of calm washed over him as the sky began to turn purple. He would definitely come back and restore the area to the luscious grounds it once was. He felt bad for letting it go.

He turned and headed back towards the castle as the sun vanished completely.

“Noctis?”

He froze. The voice was new, and yet there was something familiar in the way his name sounded. He turned, slowly.

The woman from the night before stood at the edge of the lake. Once again, she was in a flowing white gown, and appeared to be almost glowing. And the way she looked at him, the way she knew his name...he didn’t want to get his hopes up but...

He wasn’t sure he could say he was imagining things anymore. “Who are you?”

She moved closer, bringing her clasped hands up to her chest. “Noctis, it’s me.”

He licked his lips and his pulse raced. Had he fallen asleep on the dock? Or was this real?

“Luna?”

She nodded, strands of her blonde hair shimmering in the soft light of dusk.

Despite the acknowledgement, Noctis couldn’t move. He was too afraid it would break whatever was happening, whatever magic had brought her to him. “How? Am I dreaming?”

“This is real.” She walked closer, and reached out one hand towards him.

A part of Noctis was still very much unsure, and scared. “But you’re dead.”

Instead of dreaming, Noctis wondered if he had died, and this was the afterlife, where he could finally be united with Luna. That would be the way of things, wouldn't it be. Maybe in Vesperpool the Liege of the Lake had eaten him. OR they had gotten in a car crash. Or some other terrible accident that his brain wouldn’t want him to remember.

“We weren’t killed,” Luna moved gracefully towards him and once close enough, took one of his hands in hers. Her skin was like ice, and her hands soft. “My brother and mother and I, we were cursed. And have been in hiding ever since, afraid to show ourselves and risk being caught.”

He had so many questions. He focused on her blue eyes now that she was so close. He remembered looking into those eyes all those years ago, when they had first pledged their loyalty to one another as kids. Something in him knew it was her, and yet now that he faced her again, he wasn’t sure how he could believe it.

Luna tightened her grip on his hand to bring him back from his thoughts. “But then I saw you, at the lake, and I believe now the Astrals have given me the sign I have been waiting for, that now is the time for us to reunite. That you can save us.”

“Save you?”

“Yes, there is a way to break this spell. But my brother, he worries about trying because there is also a risk that it fails, and we either perish or are doomed to live as Daggerquills for the rest of our lives.”

Once again things had stepped into the realm of unbelievable, of children’s stories. Noctis stepped back, pulling his hand away from her. Guilt lodged itself in his throat at the way her face gave way from a smile, to sadness.

But Noctis couldn’t help his uneasiness. “Wait wait. This is. This is too crazy.” He needed time to work through this. Maybe needed Ignis at least to get his advice, or to even make sure this was happening -

“On the contrary,” a voice echoed around them. Luna gasped and based on the fear in her eyes, Noctis summoned a sword as he spun around so that she was at his back. He held the sword up in front of him.

Then Ravus, Luna’s brother and the prince of Tenebrae appeared, standing much taller than Noctis remembered, dressed in simple linen pants and blouse, with a long cloak over. But then beside him was another man, and when he spoke Noctis realized he was the one who frightened Luna. He was dressed way too extravagantly for being outside at night on the castle grounds. And most notable was the strange black wing that seemed to replace one of his arms.

“It’s quite brilliant,” the stranger spoke, “and I do have you to thank as well, for luring my poor dears out of hiding.”

Noctis took in a breath and hardened his stance. “You leave her alone!”

“Leave us,” Ravus hissed “you’re only making this worse!”

He didn’t even have a moment to process that Ravus was also there, alive, just like Luna apparently was. And then he remembered, there were two white Daggerquills at Vesperpool. The crescent moon over the beak, the blue eyes. Could that have been -

If there was a chance any of this was real, and this man before him was the one responsible, he could end this here and now and save Luna.

With all his might, Noctis sprung forward with his sword aimed towards the stranger’s heart.

Instead of flesh though his sword was blocked by a shield, the force of it enough to send him flying backwards. In that time, the stranger had grabbed Luna and pulled her over to Ravus, who lifted a hand to create a shield of blue light surrounding them both.

“Hey! Let her go!”

“Noctis,” Luna’s voice sounded defeated. He never imagined he would hear her sound so scared. Or so helpless. “You can't hurt Ardyn. If anything happens to him, we’re also cursed forever, not even allowed to shift into our human form at night.”

Ardyn smiled and released his hold on her. “Good girl. You know your place.”

“I said let her go! You’re on castle grounds, you must do as I say!” His voice trembled but he did his best to try to emulate his father, to sound like the royalty he always avoided being like.

“You’ve caused enough trouble,” Ravus said, but he didn’t sound mad. He sounded resigned, tired. “We shouldn’t have followed you in the first place.”

He doesn't miss the look Ravus gives Luna, but she doesn't cower from him. She lifts her chin defiantly.

So, then it is just Ardyn she is scared of, which means he is more powerful than her or Ravus. Though the extent of their abilities he couldn’t be sure - living all these years like this, could they do much aside from defensive spells? The Tenebraen blood was the blood of magic users - they should have been able to fight their way out of anything.

He was getting caught up in his thoughts again. “What's the point of this! What do you want!”

Noctis would give it. Whatever it took to free them. He wouldn’t tell Ardyn that, but he needed to know what it would take.

“Tut tut, that’s very personal business lad. “Come now, my little goslings. It’s time we go have a little family reunion.”

With that, the three of them turned their backs on Noctis.

“You can’t just walk away from me!”

Ardyn turned, while Ravus led Luna away. “My dear boy, don’t worry. We’ll meet again.”

Noctis didn't care at that moment about curses. What he cared about was saving Luna and Ravus. He charged forward again now that Ravus wasn't looking -

Ardyn lifted his winged arm, and with one sweep sent Noctis flying backwards. His side hit a boulder, and he fell to the ground.

His back screamed at him, and Noctis was forced to watch as Ardyn disappeared with Luna and Ravus before he could get up.

🌙 🌙 🌙

It had been slow to get back to his quarters that night, but a few potions did the trick in masking his injury. He only hoped no one would be checking the medical supplies any time soon, or was keeping track of how many they had on hand. The magic to make them was delicate, but Noctis also didn’t want to try to explain how he had been injured.

By a wing. Not even a weapon. Noctis wanted to know more about Ardyn, and whatever this curse was he had placed on the Nox Fleurets. But first, he had to sleep.

Ignis woke just after Noctis had fallen onto his bed, much to his chagrin. The last thing Noctis wanted to do was work on the upcoming ball. Not when he knew Luna was alive and out there, needing help.

But explaining the situation to someone, he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t sound out of his mind. And he wasn’t even entirely sure it hadn’t been some kind of vivid dream. Because turning people into creatures, that kind of curse sounded like something out of an ancient Solheim story, not anything that would happen in the modern day.

But he sat quietly at the table for breakfast while Ignis gave him an invite list to review. Noctis was so distracted he hardly argued with any of the recommendations. He spent the whole day like that, blindly following ignis around and just being told what to choose, what to do, where to go. Meanwhile in the back of his mind, he tried to work out a plan.

After dinner, Noctis headed out once again to the lake - he didn't expect to find anyone, but he hoped to find clues somewhere about what was going on and maybe where Ardyn had taken them. And he hoped Luna and Ravus were alright.

As soon as he approached the lake, he could see Luna sitting on a rock, looking out over the water, as if just in respite and not at all under distress, not at all being held against her will.

His heart raced as he came to terms with the fact that she was actually there. That it wasn’t a dream. She was alive. Really alive. He walked up but kept a good distance away at first so he didn’t startle her.

“Hey,”

Luna turned to look back over her shoulder at him, a soft smile making her seem radiant in the moonlight. “Noctis, you’re back”

Hearing his name from her lips made his racing heart nearly stop. “It’s really you, right? This isn’t a dream? Last night, that was real?”

She shook her head, but she seemed sad. “It very much is real.”

Noctis rushed over to her. He wanted to touch her, but he held himself back still, instead resting his hands flat on the rock beside her. “Tell me, tell me what happened. And how can I fix this! Where's Ravus? And Ardyn?”

She didn't move from the rock, and she didn’t make any motion towards Noctis. He wanted to take her hand, hug her, something, but he wasn’t sure she would even want that.

He didn’t want to rush her to speak, so he tried his best to stay patient while Luna looked out over the lake before finally turning to look at him. She turned and took his hand in both of hers, and relief washed over him at the contact.

“Ravus is elsewhere, he’s very angry with me. With you. Ardyn is...we don’t know where.”

“What? Why is Ravus mad?”

She sighed and looked down at Noctis’s hand. “We had been in hiding for so long, and I was the one who wanted to come here, yesterday, after we saw you in Vesperpool. But that led to Ardyn catching us. Somehow he knew when we had arrived.”

“But during the day you can fly. Can’t you just run away?” Noctis thought about what he would do if he could take flight.

She shook her head and squeezed his hand gently. “He’s tied us now to this lake. We can’t leave during the day, and if we don’t return before sunrise, we will...perish.”

Noctis blinked at her. She may have felt guilt, but the weight in Noctis’s stomach grew heavier by the second as he realized she had come there for him. That Ravus was right that he was why they were there. In the end, this was all his fault. He had condemned them to this place where before they were at least free to go wherever they pleased.

“Why is Ardyn doing this? What does he get out of it?”

She closed her eyes and breathed deep before pulling away from Noctis, and he resisted the urge to reach out to her and pull her back to him. She pushed herself off the rock and stepped with bare feet to the edge of the water. Her dress moved around her body almost like waves.

“I imagine he will do to us like he did to our mother - absorb our power eventually. So either way...our time is short. Sometimes I wonder if it is better to just let ourselves stay out, than to allow him to use us for his powers. At least then we would win, I suppose.”

“You don’t mean that!” This time he did take her hand, and when she turned to look at him, tears welled up in her eyes. But she kept her composure.

She managed a soft smile. “You would probably think the same if it were you. You are most noble.”

He shook his head. “I’m not giving up, Luna. Now that I know you’re alive, you don’t have to do this alone.”

“It's not something I can put on your shoulders.” with one step back her hand slipped from Noct’s grip.

“I came here wanting to see you one last time but, now you must go. Please.”

“But Luna -”

“I don't wish you to be here when Ravus returns. He’ll get angrier.”

Noctis stepped away against his better judgement, turning his back to her and walking across the grounds. His thoughts spiraled away from himself as he tried to work through the guilt, the anger, the sadness, of everything he had seen in the last 24 hours. Luna was alive, she was here, and yet somehow there was nothing Noctis could do to save her, nothing he could do to be with the one person he had always dreamed of being with.

He ran the rest of the way back to the castle, pretending the tears in his eyes were from the wind on his face.

Once in his room, he tried to sleep, but all he could do was watch the moon and count down until Luna and Ravus would once again be turned.

He hadn’t realized he’d fallen asleep until Ignis shook his shoulder to wake him up.

After a long day of reviewing the invite list for the coming ball a final time, Noctis pushed himself to go out after sunset to the lake. Luna had said goodbye, but Noctis wasn’t willing to give up yet.

He walked around the entire lake, but she wasn’t there, and neither was Ravus. There were no signs of a struggle, but Noctis still feared something had happened. Ardyn could have already gotten to them, or they ran and -

No, he couldn’t let himself believe they were gone. Not yet.

He sat on the same rock Luna had the night before until he nodded off for the tenth or so time, and finally decided to head back. But once again he couldn’t fall asleep until the sun came up, and Ignis was once again shaking him awake.

It wasn't like him not to be able to sleep, and he was worried ignis would start to catch on.

He was a bit of a zombie the whole day, nearly falling asleep standing while the tailor took measurements for his new suit, and then trying to just pick the first design possible for his mask to make things move quickly. But Ignis wouldn't have it, and made sure Noctis had seen all options before making his selection.

And okay, he had found one he actually liked - it looked like a Daggerquill, feathers of black and dark blue and gold, and of course it reminded him of Luna.

But man, he was tired. Despite this he counted down the minutes until he could go to the lake. He needed to see if Luna was there, or some sign that she was okay and hadn't...been taken. Or anything else. He would go back there every night for the rest of his days if he had to, until he knew what had happened, until he was absolutely sure there was nothing he could do.

After dinner that night, he debated a nap, but decided the sooner he could get to Luna the better, so he just pushed on. And when he got to the edge of the lake, he was glad he had - he could see Luna and Ravus on the other side.

But they were clearly arguing, by the way they faced each other. Noctis ducked behind the giant rock and peeked out so he wouldn’t be seen.

“I know that you are throwing your life away!” Ravus shouted. “We were doing fine! We were safe!”

“That may be! But…it’s my choice. Why not try to at least save this world? And ourselves?”

Ravus glowered at her, then threw his arms up before he stormed away from her a few feet, then turned back to her. “It’s too great a risk. If he doesn’t -”

“If he doesn’t then we know what we must do. Our bloodline has protected this world for centuries. We can’t ignore that now because it’s inconvenient.”

“It's more than inconvenient!” He charged forward, and Noctis feared he would strike Luna. Instead, they just faced each other, staring.

“It's our lives.”

“This is what our legacy is for.”

Ravus shook his head, and then they spoke too softly for him to hear. Noctis sat on the ground with his back against the boulder. Was there someone else who could help? Why wouldn't they trust him? Noctis could at least help get him if that's what they needed.

After he didn’t hear anything for some time, he looked out again to see that Luna was alone. She stood at the edge of the water, almost like she was studying her own reflection. It looked like she was crying, and he desperately wanted to go to her.

At the risk of causing more trouble, Noctis stepped out from the cover of the rock and made his way around the lake until he neared her - and he could tell una was in her head because she didn't notice until he was just a few steps away.

“Ah, Noctis,” she wiped her eyes quickly with the back of her hand and stood tall and regal, giving him a fake smile, “you’re here.”

“Luna, I know you told me not to, but I couldn’t stay away. Not when you’re so close.”

She visibly swallowed and wiped at her cheeks. “I am glad you’re here.”

“You won’t send me away?”

She studied him, and looked at the trees. “No, I won’t. I’m sorry I did before. I was...lost. Scared.”

Noctis let himself be pulled towards her by the feeling in his chest. “I want to hear more about you.”

She shook her head. “I would rather hear about you, Noctis. You’ve grown so much in five years. Tell me all I’ve missed.”

She reached out her hand and he took it, noting once again how smooth and cold her skin was. Their fingers interlaced and when he tore his gaze away to look at her, she just smiled.

They walked around the lake, and Noctis lost track of time talking all about his life - it was the most he’d ever spoken with anyone in one night, he was pretty sure. The whole time they held hands. It felt right. It felt like nothing Noctis knew he would experience with anyone he would be forced to meet at the ball.

Noctis once more was out until about sunrise, collapsing into bed just a couple hours before he was roused by Ignis for the day’s tasks. This time though, there was more excitement drumming through him than anything else.

Luna was still around. There was a chance, now, that he could help her and Ravus. They hadn’t run off or refused to speak with him. That alone gave Noctis hope. And enough energy to last a little longer through the day before he felt like he would collapse.

It was the day of trying on his suit and mask so that the tailor could make any adjustments before Saturday. Thankfully it was all within the castle walls, but still meant that he needed to once again be conscious and standing for much of the day.

His mask was checked out first, and after lunch it was time to meet with the tailor. Standing in one spot for an extended bit of time finally made sleep catch up to Noctis. He felt his eyes fluttering and bought to keep them open.

“Highness,” Ignis’s voice pulled him out of a near-nap standing up incident. The tailor worked on the hem of his pants, and Noctis blinked at his reflection in the mirror to catch the look ignis gave him.

Ignis crossed his arms. “You look very tired, and have been for several days now.”

“I’m uh, not sleeping.”

“That’s not like you, do you need to see the doctor?”

“No, look I’ll,” he looked around them. Servants were moving all around in and out with their own preparations for the ball, rushing past down the hall with flowers, vases, whatever else they needed to prepare the ballroom. “Later?”

Ignis studied him, then nodded and went back to making his own notes while the tailor finished with Noct.

Noct focused on his reflection and the movements of the tailor to keep himself engaged and awake. He debated telling Ignis, from the start, but he wasn't sure how much help Ignis or the others would be. First, he needed to get Luna to tell him more about the curse. If she did, then he would be able to form a plan with his friends better.

He determined he would try to get an answer that night.

“Luna, you still haven't told me how I can save you.” Noctis spoke as they walked around the lake again, the moon high and reflecting off the white of Luna’s dress. He always wondered if she was cold, but she never seemed to even shiver in the night air.

“You’re so stubborn still, even now,” her voice tinged with sadness despite the small joke. “It would do no good to tell you, as it isn’t possible. That's the point of curses, isn't it? To not have a happy ending?”

“You don’t know that.” He clenched his hands into fists.

“Noctis,—”

“No, really, you’ve been stuck right? Out here?” he turned to face her, their hands still clasped, and he didn’t even really think about it, not until he looked at their hands. He held on tighter, lifting their hands up between them. She watched him.

“Luna, I want to help. Please.” IT was all he could really muster to say. He wanted to admit more to her - admit about the ball which he hadn’t even told her about yet, tell her how dumb the whole thing was, especially ow.

Because she was his betrothed. She was supposed to be his queen. Not anyone else. He squeezed her hand at this thought.

She squeezed his hands in return. “I am happy here, with you now. For however long I can have this. It's more than I ever thought I would have.”

Noctis wasn't really good at this whole...emotions...thing. He knew that about himself. Dating was of course not a thing he did, and Luna had been lost before he had even considered that part of their relationship.

But this wasn’t just anyone, he had to remind himself. It was Luna.

He stepped closer to her, his pulse going fast when she didn’t pull away. He leaned forward and kissed her, lightly, on the cheek.

Just that. He pulled away and could feel the heat on his own cheeks.

He pushed himself to keep talking so that things wouldn’t become awkward. “We’re uh, engaged right? It’s my duty, responsibility, to save you.”

She held a hand up to the place Noctis had kissed which somehow made him feel even more embarrassed. “I think that perhaps that commitment ended once I had vanished.”

He shook his head. “Not for me. Whatever dad wanted me to do, whatever was expected of me, I didn’t want to do it. I always thought about you. About being only with you.”

It was embarrassing, talking like that, but if it would mean that Luna would tell him how he could help, he was willing to push through it.

“I cannot place that burden on your shoulders.” She stepped away. When he reached for her, she moved further away.

“I feel tired, I think I shall rest.” she turned and left Noctis there, standing near the water. He couldn’t feel good about getting more sleep that night, he knew he wouldn't be able to rest.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” he shouted, so that she would know he would return. That he wouldn’t give up. She had resigned herself to her fate, but Noctis wasn’t ready to do the same.

He had to come up with a plan. He needed help.

“You don’t need to take us to watch you fish. I would rather you just slept.” Ignis complained, but hadn’t stopped their walk across the castle grounds. “I’m sure whatever it is you are trying to catch will still be there after you’ve been engaged.”

“Just trust me, specs, this will be worth it.” Noctis was nervous, but also, he knew that if anyone would be able to help, it would be his friends. But he also wasn’t sure how Luna would react to have this sprung on her. He tried not to let the guilt of that take over - she needed help. The more help, the better.

“If this is just for some tiny fish, I will make your life hell in training.” Gladio stepped in something that made a squelching sound and cursed under his breath.

“Weren’t you always trying to get me outdoors more?” Noctis smiled and stuck his tongue out at Gladio, who pressed his lips together.

“Outdoors and prepared for it, not out for a walk in the middle of the night in my regular boots.”

“Just, trust me, okay? This’ll be worth it.”

As they approached the lake, he saw that Luna wasn't there - the worry that she wouldn’t return after their conversation the night before wiggled its way up his chest, but he forced it back down. He had to believe that some part of her still wanted to be saved, and would welcome them, and their help. He led the guys over to the side of the lake with the edge of the forest, so that their backs would be to her if...when she appeared.

He really hoped this would work.

Noctis summoned his fishing pole and acted as though he was adjusting the lure while facing the guys, so he could keep an eye on the trees. “So they say, this fish is pure white, and only appears when the moon is reflected in the lake.”

“Here? I’ve not heard such stories.” Ignis scoffed.

Noctis hid his panic. Of course Ignis would be aware of any and all myths around the castle. Especially any around fish. But he just grinned and held the pole up.

“Yup, here! Right under our noses. Something, right?” He cleared his throat and looked past them into the line of trees. He thought he saw a flash of white in the distance and prayed it was Luna.

Gladio crossed his arms. “Look while I appreciate your sudden interest in being outdoors, this sounds like a silly fairy tale. You been listening to the staff?”

Noctis put a finger to his lips. “Shh you’ll scare her.” He watched as the flash of white drew near. He threw out the fishing line into the water, and glanced over his shoulder. The three of them stood directly behind him. Gladio and Ignis looked annoyed, while Prompto looked concerned. Whether it was for Noctis or for the fact that Gladio and ignis were radiating frustration, he wasn't sure.

And then Luna stepped out from the trees nearly glowing. Her stare was focused on Noctis, and he waited a breath as she stood and seemed to be thinking of her next move.

She silently laughed, and shook her head. Noctis almost thought that would be it. But then she held her hands in front of her and stepped closer.

“You must be Noct’s friends I have heard so much about.”

The guys all turned around, and collectively shouted in surprise as Luna greeted them.

With Ignis at the lake, he had been able to make sure Noctis got enough sleep that night. And somehow, despite all the excitement, Noctis had fallen asleep for once right after getting back.

But once he was awake and sitting at breakfast, Ignis joined him with a sour look on his face.

“What? Why do you look like that?”

“I don't know what you hoped that would do, taking us there. Speaking with Lady Lunafreya.”

“Now you know what's going on, we can sort this out together. I knew I couldn't do it alone.”

“Noct,—”

“Besides, would you have believed me if I just told you that Luna was back, but she was cursed, and we had to somehow lift it?”

Ignis took in a breath before he answered. “I don't think this is something any of us are equipped to handle. It's a curse from a powerful man, none of us have that kind of magic.”

Noctis was aware of that. He had to just make Ignis have the same hope he did, somehow. “Ya but now we can all work together! To figure this out.”

“Today” Ignis poured himself some more coffee, “we can focus on getting ready for the ball which is in two days' time and we still have much to do.”

Noctis stared at him, mouth hanging open. “What? You’re still thinking of the ball? Now?”

Ignis rested both hands on the table. “We can't upset your fathers plans for this. There’s still much we don’t know.”

“But Specs,”

“We must move forward with the preparations. Perhaps after this one, we can continue to work on helping Luna, but we cannot cancel it.”

Noctis nearly bit his tongue forcing himself not to argue more as servants came in to clear their dishes.

That night, when Noctis went to the lake he was almost worried Luna wouldn't be there; he knew it was risky to bring the guys to her, but he just. He wanted her to know she wasn't alone here, that they would all figure it out. Though his conversation with Ignis that day hadn’t ended well, Noctis hoped that maybe now she would speak a bit more freely. Tell him how they could save her.

At first he didn't see her anywhere and his heart sank, but then he caught a glimpse of her, standing just inside the line of trees. He thought she might be waiting to see if the others were with him again.

“I’m alone,” he shouted, and then she did step out. He shoved the guilt away, “Look Luna I’m sorry I surprised you yesterday”

She didn’t say anything, but stumbled towards him - Noctis realized she had bruises on one arm. “Luna?’

She nearly fell into his arms. She felt light, and her breath weak. He lifted her upright. “What happened?”

“Ardyn, he came for us at sunrise, but Ravus, he held him off until we - until we changed. I haven't seen him yet though, either of them,” she looked off into the forest. “Ravus could be gravely injured, or…”

“Hey,” he walked her over to a set of rocks and helped her sit, and knelt in front of her. “We’ll find him. I promise.”

She looked down at him. There were small red dots around her neck, as if she had something applying pressure to her there. Anger welled up inside him at realizing that Ardyn had probably been about to hurt her when Ravus stepped in, and most likely became the one to bear the brunt of Ardyn’s wrath.

Promising to find Ravus suddenly felt very empty.

Noctis needed to use this, as much as he hated it, to get Luna to tell him everything. To finally have the last piece he needed to save them both.

“Luna,” she returned her gaze to him, tears swimming in her eyes, “we can fix this, you know that. Why won't you let us help?”

She bit her lower lip and looked out over the water. “It’s unfair, the way to save us. It puts too much on anyone, and Ravus... We must find him first.”

“Nothing is too much for you, Luna.”

He almost thought she wouldn't speak again. But then she spoke, quietly, without looking at him.

“The curse can be broken only by the one who claims my heart. They must pronounce it before the gods.”

Noctis followed the small waves caused by the wind across the top of the water. “Luna, you know-”

“No no,” she turned and grabbed his shoulder. “Please, do not speak it, I cannot put that on you. However you think you feel, Noctis, we haven’t seen each other since we were children. This burden isn’t yours to bear.”

Noctis thought back to the argument her and Ravus had. “You know I will do anything for you.”

She released him and wiped at her eyes. “I have thought about this so very much, Noctis, and I am sure it would only bring more harm to you. I don't know truly what this means, but I wouldn't want any harm to come to you. My brother...my brother and I, we know what we must do.

Trying to save us is pointless.”

🌙 🌙 🌙

“Are you excited, son?”

“Huh? What about?” Noctis looked up from the lunch he’d hardly touched to acknowledge his dad, seated at the other end of the table. They were in the gardens since the weather was nice, but all Noctis could see were reminders of Luna in the flowers and birds all around them.

His dad gave him a sour look. “For the masquerade tonight, of course. I have been told there are some beautiful guests attending.”

“Oh. that. I’m. Yeah, excited. Nervous.” he focused on his plate, sliding the food around. He didn't have much of an appetite - he knew the ball was that night, how could he forget? But he already knew there would be no one there who measured up to Luna, and even more so now that she was somehow alive. Noctis wanted to focus on saving her, of breaking the curse. Not standing around at a ball watching strangers try to impress him.

He wasn’t sure how much time they had left, but he didn't trust that Ardyn wouldn’t act sooner rather than later.

“Just think,” his dad continued, clearly unaware of how Noctis was actually not excited. Or chose to ignore it if he did, “if you can find someone tonight, this is the only one you need to attend.”

“I’ll do my best.” If Noctis had anything to say, this would definitely be his last ball, no matter what.

“I’ll see you then, his dad rose and Noctis stood as well. He approached him and brought a hand to Noctis’s shoulder, smiling and shaking it a little.

“Dad?”

“You’re growing up, it’s hard to believe.”

Noctis couldn’t keep looking at his dad with the way he looked at him with so much joy, and pride. He cast his stare down to the floor.

Without another word, his dad walked away. Noctis stayed still until he was sure he had left the room. Then Noctis left as well, heading immediately for his quarters. Ignis was in there with Gladio; Gladio was reviewing some documents while Ignis was steaming Noctis’s attire for the night.

“Ah, excellent, we need to review the schedule for tonight and the dances you’ve already got lined up.” Ignis motioned to Gladio.

Noctis groaned and shut the door loudly. Probably louder than he needed to, but his frustration was at a near boiling point. “Do I really need to do this? You guys know what we should be focusing on.”

Ignis sighed. “You know you must.”

“But Luna - “

“Is by all accounts, not a possible partner.” He set down the steamer. “At least not for tonight. You need to go through the motions, I’m afraid.”

He stared at Ignis, then Gladio, who said nothing. Just focused on the papers in front of him. One night could make all the difference for Luna and Ravus. One night could be all they had; he didn’t understand why the guys didn’t get it.

Noctis trudged over to his bed and sat, then fell onto his back. “But she’s alive. And I can save her. Tonight.”

“Noct,” Ignis warned.

“She told me how! Kind of. She just. Didn't think it would be me. Didn’t want to put that pressure one me.”

“She is a princess, through and through.”

“Noct, just get through tonight, your dad’s been looking forward to it. Then we can do whatever you want.”

“He cannot do whatever he wants, -”

“What?”

As they continued bickering, Noctis zoned out on the bed, staring up at the ceiling. He needed to be at the ball that night, to appease his dad and his duty as prince, but he also needed to save Luna. And from what he understood, the way to do that was to...say he loved her.

He sat up suddenly with an idea. “Guys,”

Ignis and Gladio turned and gave him their full attention.

“I need you to go find Luna - tonight.” He hopped off the bed, renewed with energy as he thought through his plan. Ignis seemed about to interrupt, so he kept going. “Bring her to the castle, to the ball. If we show everyone she’s alive, and I can break the curse, and then everything will be alright!”

Ignis opened his mouth to say something, probably to argue, but Gladio said simply, “Of course, we’ll bring her.”

“Gladio,—"

Noctis smiled. “Great.”

Ignis looked between the two of them, and then resigned to his fate. “I shall go get Prompto to prepare him for the change in plans.”

“Thanks, Specs.”

“You owe me,” he threatened as he left the room.

“I know!” Noctis shouted after him. He felt suddenly rejuvenated and excited for the night. Everything would be wrapped up, and they could go on with their lives.

Knowing there was a plan in place made the day go by a little quicker - he didn’t mind making sure that everything looked perfect in the ballroom, checking the food, and decorations. He would confess to Luna that night, save her, and ask her to be his betrothed. It had to be perfect.

In front of the mirror that evening, the nerves kicked in. Not nervous about saving Luna, he assumed that part would go just fine, but the whole admitting his feelings was hard enough for him on a good day, let alone having to express his feelings to an entire room of strangers and his father.

“Don’t be nervous!” Prompto was next to him instantly in the mirror’s reflection, flashing a smile. “You look amazing.”

Noctis blushed and looked over himself. The suit they had decided on was of course black, but it had small embellishments of gold, and he wore a heavy blue sash from his shoulder to his waist. He almost didn’t look like himself in this getup.

The only thing left was to put on the mask - even though everyone knew who he was, it was still part of the ‘fun’ of the night. Even his dad would wear one. Maybe that’s why he wanted to have these balls.

Noctis laughed a little to himself.

Gladio poked his head into the room. “Blondie let’s go, we’re heading to the lake.”

“We’ll see you soon,” Prompto winked and then he was out the door, and Noctis was alone, once again staring at himself.

“Okay, let’s do this.” He grabbed his mask and put it on - the hints of gold around the eyes made heightened his blue eyes, and the black feathers made his skin appear even paler.

He really almost didn’t recognize himself.

He stepped out the door and let the guards lead him to the ballroom, where everyone was already waiting for him. The double doors were opened, and his presence was announced.

The room was...overwhelming. He forgot that along with the long list of potential partners, they would of course be bringing with them parents or siblings or whoever they wanted to bring as a guardian to have at their side when they weren’t dancing with Noctis, or other patrons.

He only paused a brief moment, somehow, before making his way immediately towards his father at the front of the room, and took his place beside him.

“My boy,” his dad smiled widely, “are you ready?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” he said as lightly as he could. His dad didn’t seem put off by his tone, so it was a win.

“Greetings, everyone!” When his dad spoke, the room instantly went quiet. “We are most excited to welcome you to our home for this occasion. We have our list of dance partners ready for the night, we will call your name when it is your time. Otherwise, please enjoy your evening!”

With that, the whole room cheered, and music began to play from one of the corners. Noctis took in a deep breath. He wasn’t sure how much time he would have to pass before the guys showed up with Luna, but he had to put that in the back of his mind until she arrived.

Noctis hadn’t wanted to dance yet, because at any moment the others could return with Luna, and he wanted to make sure he could be at her side instantly. But of course, the schedule had other options.

As he was with the first partner - a young woman from a small noble family he had already forgotten the name of, he couldn’t help but look over her shoulder whenever he could.

As he watched the people move around the floor dancing, he caught sight of flowing bright blonde hair. He blinked as a woman all in black walked through the crowd, and other people also took notice of her, quieting and stepping to the side as she passed. The grace with which she held herself was otherworldly. Her gown was intricate - black feathers lined her shoulders and made her neck appear long and elegant. The plunging dip of the dress in the front exposed more creamy skin, and the train behind her commanded a presence, making people move out of her way. Black pearls dotted her hair...and though she wore a black mask, he could tell instantly it was the shape of a Daggerquill.

She looked like a princess, truly. She looked like...

Luna

“Luna,” Noctis whispered out loud with a smile. His partner paused and looked behind her at what had Noctis’s attention. He took the moment to pull away, and didn’t even catch if she had any words for him as he walked away.

She was there. They had gotten her. He took a few slow steps, and then nearly ran to her, which drew even more attention to her from others. When he reached her, she looked down shyly. She was probably a bit uneasy by the amount of people around them, but Noctis wanted to make sure she knew she was safe.

“It's okay, here,” Noctis held out his hand, and she took it. When she looked up, he wished he could look into her eyes, but the mask covered them. The small smile on her face made his chest warm though. He recognized it and knew even more that it was Luna. with his free hand, he cradled her cheek, and she leaned into the touch.

“I don't know how you lost the guys, or how you got this dress but it's okay,” he pulled her to the front of the room, towards the throne. Ignis was a worker of miracles, and Noctis would be sure to thank him later.

His father watched them approach with a curious expression.

“Your Majesty!” Noctis announced as loudly as he could. He still held on to Luna’s hand as the room went silent completely silent, including the music. Luna didn't pull away, instead moving closer and wrapping her other hand around Noct’s bicep. His heart sang at the contact. They were gonna do this.

They were going to win.

Noctis turned and looked at her as he spoke loud enough for the entire room to hear. “I wish to announce that I have found my bride.”

The room erupted in gasps and shouts. When Noctis looked back up, his dad had stood up and narrowed his eyes. But soon Noctis knew he wouldn't be angry. This would be a joyous night, just like his dad had wanted for him.

“Who is this?”

He puffed up his chest, and held onto Luna even tighter. “This is Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, and I love her!”

More shouts and chatter rose up from the audience. Luna smiled widely, wider than he had seen in their time together, and clung to his arm tighter. His dad stared down at them both, confusion clear on his face.

“That isn’t possible-”

“Noct!”

He heard Prompto shout somewhere in the room. He spun around to see Ignis and Gladio running from the back. Beside him, Luna pulled away. Noctis turned to her with confusion.

“I’m sorry, I know I should have told you what I was going to do -” she still didn’t move, and Noctis suddenly worried he had fucked up somehow. That he hadn’t done things right. There hadn’t been anything to show the curse had been broken.

He took both her hands in his and was relieved when she didn’t resist. “We can talk later, I’m sorry to just drop this one you but - it’s true! I love you. And I want to save you! That...should be it, right?”

Luna still didn’t say a word. Her hands were strangely warm.

Noctis began to worry something had happened - had Ardyn taken her voice? Was she injured?

The grip on his hands tightened - to the point where it hurt. He gasped and made to pull away out of instinct, but she held on tight.

“My sweet, loyal prince charming, you saved me,” as she spoke, something was off in her voice. It was as if it were someone trying to emulate how she spoke, but not Luna herself.

Suddenly, things didn’t feel right. Noctis swallowed. “Luna?”

“Noct!” This time the voice that rang out over the room was -

“Luna?” He turned towards the crowd.

There, clad in the same delicate white dress she had always worn, was Luna, clinging to Prompto, and injured. Red stained her dress starting from a bloom at her stomach. Her eyes were wide as she looked upon Noctis.

Noctis, holding hands with someone else. Proclaiming his love for...

Noctis looked back to the person beside him, who released their hold on him and slowly removed their mask. At first, they looked like Luna, but Noctis watched in horror as the form shifted, becoming taller, broader shoulders -

Crimson hair.

Noctis stepped backwards. He nearly tripped over the carpet. “No.” Someone shouted for guards but Noctis couldn’t register who it was. All he could focus on was Luna, that he had been trying to save her, and he couldn’t even do that right.

“Tsk tsk,” Ardyn grinned and tossed the mask to the side. “It seems your dear prince has given his heart to someone else, my dear.”

Noctis couldn’t breathe. He looked back to his friends, to Luna. She wrestled herself out of Prompto’s grip, and ran back the way they came in, disappearing around a corner.

“Luna!” Noctis lunged forward. Ardyn grabbed him by the arm. He stumbled backwards and was left to watch as Prompto spun around to follow her. He heard the clanging of guards moving closer, but Ardyn didn’t look afraid at all as he leaned down close to Noctis.

“Now she is mine, and I thank you.”

Noctis growled. “No! I thought you - that can’t be it. You tricked me!”

Ardyn straightened up and held his other arm out - the black wing spreading out in front of Noctis. Everyone stopped.

“Am I to blame that you couldn’t recognize the love of your life?” he spoke the last words with a kind of sneer of disgust. Then he turned his attention to the guards approaching them both slowly with their swords at the ready. “There’s no need for violence, I was just leaving.”

And with that, Ardyn released Noctis, and then transformed into a black crane, flying over their heads. Noctis fell to the floor and watched, and then stilled as silence fell over the room.

Luna

Noctis fumbled getting up on his feet. He ran down the stairs, ignoring the shouts of his father. He had to get to the lake.

He had to get to Luna, before the sun came up. He had to tell her. There had to still be time.

Nearing the lake Noctis could hear the sounds of fighting, of shouts - and it only made Noctis run harder. Behind him he could hear Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto following. He wouldn’t stop for them - they would catch up once he was at the lake. When the water’s edge came into view, the scene made Noctis freeze.

A bright red aura surrounded Ardyn. Luna and Ravus laid on the ground.

“No!” Noctis shouted and ran towards them. The others shouted behind him and he didn't care. He summoned his sword as he slid in front of Ardyn, protecting Luna and Ravus.

Ardyn’s eyes glowed with the reflection of the light around him. It was like that of the armiger, somehow. “This doesn’t concern you boy, you’ve played your part.”

Noctis shook his head. “Walk away, now.”

Ardyn laughed. “The damage is done; you’ve already failed her. With the dawn she will return to a crane, and her power will transfer to me.”

Noctis held his ground and raised his sword up higher. “Release them.”

“Noctis.” Luna said weakly from behind him. He couldn’t stop himself from turning to look down at her -

“Noct!” He heard the shout too late as a blade sliced through his side. It almost didn’t hurt at first, not until the blade slid back out and he saw the blood escape down his stomach.

“Shit,” he collapsed to his knees. He heard Gladio screaming something that sounded like a howl, and then the sounds of fighting were behind him.

“No, no, please,” Luna pushed herself up to sit. Noctis felt like he was - floating. Like nothing happening was real. He focused on Ravus on the ground and realized his eyes were open, unblinking.

Noctis was too late.

“Luna,” he whispered. The pain in his side burned. He closed his eyes.

Cold hands moved him to the ground, onto his back. He struggled to open his eyes, but when he did, Luna hovered above, looking down at him.

“Just lie still,” her voice was hoarse.

“Luna, you’re hurt.”

She shook her head. “Do not worry about me. You must destroy Ardyn.”

He clenched his eyes shut. “I-”

“Don’t speak,”

He tried to breathe slowly, and then he felt a warmth on the wound in his side. He forced his eyes open again and saw Luna's hands glowing bright white with magic.

“Wait, no, Ravus,—”

She shook her head. “He is lost, but I can still save you.”

“But you’re -.”

“I am also lost,” she whispered, focusing on her magic instead of meeting Noctis’s stare. “But you must defeat Ardyn, so that he cannot take our powers. So that he cannot....bring the darkness to this world.”

Warmth spread through his body as Luna fell to lie with her head on his chest. He stared at her for a few breaths, breaths he could take easily.

He watched as her face fell into a neutral expression. Her mouth slackened. Her eyes closed.

“Luna…” Noctis touched her shoulder. Shook it. Around him, he could once again hear fighting. The guys had somehow been holding off Ardyn.

“No,” he shook her shoulder again, “no no no - Luna!”

Swords clashed and gunfire forced him to look past her. The sky was changing to purple - the sun was coming up.

He knew what he had to do.

Carefully, Noctis moved Luna to lie beside her brother. He leaned over her, just as she had done to him, and rested his forehead against hers. It wasn’t until tears hit her cheeks, that he realized he was crying.

He had to destroy Ardyn. He had to finally end this. The years of fighting. The years of sadness. He wouldn’t hurt anyone else.

Noctis kissed Luna’s forehead, “Thank you, Luna.” He stood and turned, holding his sword tight. That same warmth from the magic used on his injury continued to spread through his body, and Noctis knew it was Luna’s power, the last of her being, that he needed in order to take out Ardyn.

He didn’t hesitate. He gripped the hilt of his sword and watched as a golden light wrapped around the blade, it transformed into a long trident before his eyes.

With all the resolve left in his very self, Noctis aimed at Ardyn, and warped forward.

Ardyn must have heard him at the last second, but even still he only had enough time to turn before Noctis ran him through the chest, just under his throat.

Ardyn stumbled. They stared at each other as Noctis pushed the trident in deeper, holding it in place while that same light began to take over Ardyn, his skin burning as if touched by a fire.

“Noct!” Prompto shouted.

“Stay back!” He ordered, for probably the first time in his life. He didn’t look to make sure they listened.

“Foolish boy,” Ardyn’s voice cracked. Dark blood fell out the corner of his mouth. “Did you think you could attack me unscathed?”

Ardyn twisted his hand, and it was then Noctis felt it - a searing pain between his ribs, punched right below his sternum.

“Noct!” The others screamed in unison. Noctis released the trident and fell back, looking down at the glowing red broadsword that he had been pierced with.

Ardyn collapsed to his knees, then onto his side, still staring at Noctis. The trident’s magic wrapped around him. As the sun crested over the horizon, Ardyn let out a scream. His body slowly disintegrated, and once it had been blown away by the wind, the trident disappeared in a flash of golden crystals.

Noctis did it. He defeated Ardyn.

He coughed up blood with his next inhale.

Prompto was the first to his side as he finally lost his balance. Breathing was difficult. His chest seared with a pain that took all his concentration to not scream through.

“Hey, hey buddy, I got you,” Prompto helped to get him to the ground, on his back. “Guys! I need potions!”

The familiar crackling washed over him. He could hear it behind him as well - where Luna and Ravus were.

“Nothing’s happening,” Gladio cracked another potion over Noctis.

“The magic of that sword is beyond anything we can combat.” Ignis’s voice cracked. “And Lunafreya and Ravus?”

He couldn’t hear Gladio’s reply, but Noctis knew the answer.

“No, how -” Prompto’s voice was strained.

Noctis tried to speak, but it felt like there was thick liquid in his throat. It tasted like iron. He was sad, but he didn’t want them to worry.

“You guys,” Noctis struggled to keep his eyes open. Everything felt so heavy. So warm. He could fall asleep, right there. It sounded so tempting.

“Noct,” He managed to turn his head. Iggy held his hand.

Gladio was beside Ignis, hands wrapped around the blade still in Noctis’s chest. “Hold still, I need to - shit, he’s gonna bleed out, if I do this.”

Ignis didn’t look away from Noctis’s face. “The blade might be poisoned, we must remove it so it can’t keep spreading.”

“...you….guys...” Noctis whispered.

Whatever they said next was garbled, like they were underwater. His own body was floating. Maybe somehow, they were in the lake. But that didn’t make sense. Did any of this? Was this all a dream? Would he wake up and he would be in his room, a week before the ball...

Instantly his lungs took in air freely once more. Noctis sucked in a deep breath. He opened his eyes, and he was standing along the edge of the lake’s waters. He blinked against the light of the sun.

“Noctis.” A soft voice spoke from behind him.

He spun around to see Luna, standing at the edge of the lake. In her white dress, gloriously white and glowing, looking like an angel.

“Luna!” Noctis made to go to her and then -

His body was still on the ground. His friends surrounded it, trying to revive him. The cursed sword had been removed, and they were putting potion after potion over the gaping wound it left in his chest.

“Noctis,” Luna appeared at his side. She was no longer cold to the touch - her very being radiated a warmth that comforted him as she took his hand in hers.

“I am sorry.”

“Why?”

“You sacrificed yourself, and I never wanted harm to come to you.”

Noctis worked his jaw. He looked at his friends, at his body, at their grief as they came to terms with the reality of what had happened.

“Was there any other way?”

She didn't respond right away. “I am unsure. I always felt, deep in my heart, that this would be my fate. But you saved them.”

Noctis turned to look at her. He studied her face, sorrow weighing heavy in her eyes.

“I had hoped I could save you, too.”

She leaned forward. Her lips against his were soft. She pulled away only enough to turn her face up to him, and cupped his cheek with one hand.

“You did.”
