Work Text:

Kenma was, by this point, thoroughly bored of this ordeal he had gotten himself into. Kuroo had somehow managed to convince him to start using the dating app that had just come out, NekoNeko, but this had been such a slog of a day. Kenma had no problem attracting the interest of other people on the app, and they seemed fine enough, so, at Kuroo’s insistence, Kenma scheduled dates with a variety of people. He lined them all up on one day, so he could go through them and figure out if any of them were worth pursuing.

Of course, now that he was actually several hours into his date-rush day, he had determined that the answer was a resounding no. The guys he was going on dates with were all so pedestrian, so boring. They had nothing interesting to talk about and just seemed to be hopelessly nervous in Kenma’s presence. This was a total mistake, time from his life he would never get back.

He was currently on a date at a local restaurant with a tall, twenty-something doctor. He was handsome, sure, but all he talked about was inane topics related to medicine and work. It should be a crime for someone as attractive as him to be so boring.

And so, time passed by, dates moving in and out of the day like a revolving door, each one of them equally hopeless, and Kenma found himself wishing he hadn’t humored Kuroo’s request.

“Hey, what’s wrong, you seem super detached?” his date asked him.

Kenma snapped back to reality.

“I’m sorry, you’re just really boring.” Kenma stated plainly. This guy was his penultimate date of the day, and he found himself losing patience with these hopeless guys that were throwing themselves his way.

“Oh, ok, wow.” the guy said, shocked. “You just went out and said it.” the guy seemed to be a little angry now. “Why did you even ask me out if you weren’t interested?” he asked.

“My friend told me to do it. Said I should get out more.” Kenma said.

“Well, maybe you ought to stay in more. ” the man said bitterly. “I can’t believe I wasted my time on you, I thought you were actually really cute.” the man got up abruptly from the table and walked away, fed up with the disinterest from Kenma.

Sigh

Why did people have to be so temperamental. Kenma couldn’t fathom why, of all things, the other man was the one who was upset, when Kenma had had to listen to all of his inane ramblings and poor attempts at flirting.

Part of him welcomed the other guy’s surrender though, as it meant his day would be over just a little bit quicker. He only had one date left, and he was determined to make it go by as quickly as possible. He pulled out his phone to text Kuroo.

[Kenma:] these guys all suck

[Kuroo:] aw cmon they can’t be that bad .

[Kenma:] i never realized how many idiots there are in this world

[Kenma:] well i guess i did

[Kenma:] but thats bc u exist

[Kuroo:] why are you such an asshole

[Kuroo:] ur lucky ur cute

[Kenma:] remind me why i put up with you

[Kuroo:] idk tbh

[Kuroo:] i could probably be a better date than those guys tho ;)

[Kenma:] doubt it

[Kenma:] the last guy is here gtg

Kenma abruptly shut off his phone, muting the chat to ensure he wasn’t annoyed by Kuroo’s pathetic attempts to woo him. He wasn’t so oblivious that he hadn’t noticed Kuroo had a crush on him, but Kenma wasn’t interested at all. Kuroo was an okay friend, but Kenma found him too stupid to be able to date. Plus he wasn’t his type anyways. Kenma peeked over to where his next date had arrived, instantly being caught off guard by what he saw.

He was a short little guy, with bright orange hair and a decidedly cheery demeanor. The man walked towards the hostess cheerfully, mouthing out Kenma’s name, asking where he was seated.

Oh lord, what have I gotten myself into, Kenma thought. This guy was different. Even if he probably wasn’t someone worth dating, this guy was at least going to be interesting. That much Kenma could tell.

The orange haired guy glanced at the table Kenma was at from the distance, and smiled before beginning to walk over. He waved enthusiastically as he arrived at the table.

“Hiiiii, I’m Hinata Shoyo, you’re Kenma Kozume right?” the guy asked.

Kenma nodded silently. He has a cute voice, he caught himself thinking.

“Can I sit down?” Hinata asked.

Kenma just nodded again. There was something supremely different about the aura this guy exuded, it’s as if he was in the presence of a warm, glimmering sun. It felt like summer.

“So, uh, have you been waiting long?” Hinata asked.

Kenma shook his head.

“Oh, that’s good. I was worried I was gonna be late.” Hinata looked around. “Are you okay? You seem nervous.” he asked.

Kenma snorted, finding the question immensely funny given the previous dates he had been on. The gall of this short boy to ask Kenma if he was nervous. It was amusing, to say the least.

“No, I’m not nervous, why would you think that?” Kenma finally replied.

“Wait, did I miss something? What was so funny?” Hinata asked, innocently. “And if you aren’t nervous, why are you so quiet?”

Kenma just shrugged.

“Just am. You would find it funny if your day was like mine.” Kenma said.

Hinata looked at him with a puzzled look.

“Alright, alright.” Kenma conceded. “I’ve had a very boring day today, you’re not my first date today, and you’re a bit more interesting than the other guys I’ve seen today.” Kenma said snarkily. “Does that cover it all?”

“Ohhhh, that makes sense.” Hinata said, a look of relief painting his face.

“Okay, what does that mean?” Kenma was starting to become even more intrigued by this little idiot.

“Oh, you’re not my first date today either.” Hinata explained.

Kenma’s jaw dropped. This little guy seemed to radiate pure innocence, and yet somehow, he was doing date rushes just like Kenma? No, that couldn’t be right. The guy probably swiped on Kenma because he was positively in love. That had to be it. There’s no way such a ball of sunshine could be a player, right?

Right?

It was now that Kenma began inspecting Hinata a little bit more. He was wearing very baggy clothes, mainly an oversized T-Shirt and some jeans. It was a simple outfit but also enough that Kenma couldn’t really tell what his build was underneath it. There was a decidedly... off feeling. Kenma had assumed that Hinata was pretty much the same build as him, but something didn’t seem quite right. On top of that, something about the guy seemed familiar, familiar in a very vague way. It had something to do with his complexion, his hair color. It all seemed familiar.

“So, what do you do?” Kenma asked, trying to change the sway of the conversation. Kenma now found himself asking the same inane questions he had been plagued with all day.

Hinata seemed to perk up at this question. He pulled out his phone, quickly unlocking it before turning it towards Kenma to show him a photo.

Oh. my. God.

The photo was a picture of Hinata, obviously, but what he was doing in it, was, well, unexpected.

In the picture, Hinata was shirtless, revealing a frankly rather startling build underneath. Hinata was kinda ripped. Not in a, like, bodybuilder way, but more in like a teen idol way. And then that’s when the realization hit him. He had been so lulled by his boring day that he hadn’t even thought about it.

“WAIT, YOU’RE THAT HINATA SHOYO????” Kenma would’ve done a comical spit take if he had any water in his mouth.

“Oh! You’ve heard of me!” Hinata grinned.

Of course Kenma had heard of him. Hinata Shoyo, the nobody fitness model turned Teen Idol after starring in a blockbuster Volleyball Sports drama. After that, he had started being cast in all sorts of huge films and TV shows, the most recent one being a drama/action show set in a modern fantasy world. What the fuck, Kenma found himself thinking. How did I end up on a date with an actual celebrity?

Kenma was by now a blushing, frazzled mess. He had not expected anything like this to happen today.

Hinata seemed to notice this, grinning.

“A-hah! So you were nervous!” he teased.

“Oh no I’m not nervous- OF COURSE I’D BE NERVOUS. I had no idea that I was on a date with some famous guy.” Kenma screamed, making a bit too much of a scene for the low key venue they were in.

“Shhh, calm down.” Hinata said, not wanting to draw any attention to himself. “I was surprised too. You had never mentioned my fame when we were talking on the app.”

Shit, Kenma realized. He had barely interacted with most of the people he gotten dates with. Maybe if he had gotten more info he could’ve avoided this whole ordeal.

“I guess I just didn’t realize it at the time.” Kenma lied.

“Well, I guess now that that’s out of the way,” Hinata said. “What do you do?” he asked.

“I’m a, uh.” Kenma stuttered. “I’m a video game youtuber.”

Hinata would’ve done a spit take if he had water in his mouth.

“A GAMING YOUTUBER? NO WAY!” Hinata exclaimed, forgetting his insistence of quietness and now being the one making a scene. “You’re way too pretty to be a gaming youtuber. You oughta be like a vlogger or beauty guru or something.”

Kenma blushed.

This is going to be an interesting date.

The two ended up talking on and on throughout the rest of the evening, continuing well past 2 hours into their date. Eventually, the restaurant they were in had to close, and forced them out. Despite this interruption, they continued talking, walking down the city sidewalks and pointing out things that interested them. They had a surprising amount of chemistry, much more than Kenma had ever expected to find from a dating app. They found themselves quickly approaching the end of the night, though, and Kenma had one question on his mind.

“Why were you on that dating app? Surely you have a lot of people who want to date you. Why me?” Kenma asked.

“Well…” Hinata sighed. “Dating other celebrities is so stressful. I just want a normal person at the end of the day who doesn’t care about how good we look at red carpets or how many likes our couple’s selfies get, at the end of the day.”

It made sense, Kenma thought.

“I can tell you’re a sweet guy, Kenma. And you’re pretty too.” Hinata said. “So I’ll tell you what. Here’s my number, and maybe some time we can have a real date, just us the whole day. How does that sound?” Hinata proposed.

“That sounds great-” Kenma said. He was gonna say more, but alas, his sentence was cut off by the warm, radiating heat of Hinata’s kiss.
