Soul Obligation

Summary:

Just when Kaladin thought his life couldn't get worse it turns out he's soulmates with some storming lighteyes, worse, a highprince. He's not gonna trust again. He's not. Shut up Syl.

Meanwhile Adolin just wants to know why his soulmate hates him... If only he could bring himself to hate the man back. He can pretend at least.

Dalinar totally, willfully, commits a sin, and possibly offends the Almighty, but that makes him a better parent.

Renarin is really just confused about how two wonderful people cannot get along. Honestly, why is Adolin so ungrateful? Renarin would do anything to meet his soulmate... unfortunately their dead.

(it has been so long since I read WoR and OB, and I haven't even finished RoW so like- plot memory is non-existent, and I'm taking so many liberties with these characters)

Notes:

So the Soulmate AU (one I randomly made up) I'm using is that when soulmates shake hands they will be engulfed in stormlight, that glows different colors, and surrounded by 'random' spren.

Also you can tell when your soulmate dies, because your right hand feels numb, and you feel like you're going into shock.

Chapter 1: Can't we have Dalinar be a caring parent please?

Chapter Text

After Dalinar managed to survived, thanks to the help of the bridge-crew belonging to Sadeas, he sold his shardblade to take the men who saved them, so that they wouldn't be executed. He talked to the bridgeman leader and made him a captain. Everything seemed to be going as it should, until his son, reluctantly, shook hand with the former bridge leader as Dalinar himself had already done. (Being willing to shake hands with a darkeyes was a sign of respect, as many lighteyes had a mentality of 'if my soulmate is a darkeyes, I don't want to meet them'. Though of course Dalinar had already met his soulmate, Navani, but it was the gesture that counted.) 

What surprised Dalinar was that stormlight, but of many colors, engulfed the two, and random spren appeared to dance around them. This was a sure fire sign that the two were soulmates. He was unsure what to do, and he was worried for Adolin. Don't get him wrong, the former bridgeman had saved their lives, but the man also seemed... cold. He was willing to trust the captain with matters of his safety, and even his life, but he also knew that, not only would Adolin have to suffer the looks, and rumors from a darkeyed soulmate, but... the young captain did not seem like the kind of person who would make his son happy. His son needed support, and... well Dalinar had hoped his son's soulmate would be some lighteyed lady, or at least a person the boy could trust to be his friend, without fear of them using him for his status... Dainar is not proud of what he did next. He knew that Shinovar had... theories. Theories that you could tell the future of a relation based off the colors of the stormlight and the spren that appeared. It had only been a millisecond since the bond had started. but it had felt like ages before he made his choice, he memorized all the colors and spren like he would memorize the formations of the enemy on a battlefield. Holding them in his mind, so that he could see it crystal clear in his minds eye. 

Almighty forgive me for what I am going to do, Dalinar thought as he dismissed the shocked captain, sent his son home, and went to Navani, to request that she read him a book. 

"You seek to know the future?!" Navani asked, shocked. 

"My sins are my own Navani, I will not tell you what I discover, if you so wish, but I need to be prepared for what might happen with my son." 

"I am your soulmate, platonic or not, I want to know what you find." 

"Very well," he said after a moment, "will you begin reading now?"

"It would be easier," she said, opening the book, "If you would tell me what you saw, this book is a key of sorts, listing potential colors and spren and their meanings. Plus that way I can write it down while it's still fresh in your mind," Navani said, delicately pulling out a paper and quill. 

"Very well but be sure no one finds the writings, and no one learns of this." 

"Of course, soulmate." 

Despite both agreeing, early on, that their bond was platonic, there is a sort of... tension between them, which is why Dalinar didn't spend much time around her. It WAS platonic no matter what he felt... The feelings would go away, it was platonic... No matter what she said.

Adolin's must be platonic... I mean, Adolin has courted dozens of women after all, it started rough, with distrust and rivalry, (mostly on the bridgemans part) but it would soon turn into a friendship and a platonic bond... and- and- it WOULD stay platonic, he was sure... no matter what Shinovar said. (which was apparently that it would turn to romantic after a short time as a platonic bond) 

But after expressing his thoughts to Navani, she just sighed. 

"Do you really hate the idea of them being together so much? Is it because their both men? There are plenty of other cultures whe-" She cut off as Dalinar shook his head. 

"It's not that, I want Adolin to be happy, and if they want to be together, I wont stop them. Stormfather knows I control the boy enough, and there is nothing against it in the codes, so I have no reason to stop them if that's what they want... but I hope for Adolins sake that they do not, because while I don't have a problem with it, I know that the others will, and neither of them deserve to suffer anymore. Plus it would be better for Adolin to end up with a lighteyed lady, at least in terms of politics and the other high prince's opinions on him... It would be seen as a scandal, and Adolin doesn't deserve that, plus there are the matter of heirs..." Dalinar sighed, "it will be an uphill battle for them both, and a long road in terms of their relationship... That bridgeman... is damaged, I think. He will not open up to Adolin easily, it will be difficult for them both... But at least I can hope for them to be happy in the end," Dalinar said wearily, as Navani put her freehand on his shoulder in comfort.

Its not a thing, but im making it a thing. I loved Dalinar in WoK (and thought Adolin was kinda being a whiny baby in it cause like stepping away from killing... I mean I'm not like Kal's dad, I agree with their war, but I thought Dalinar was doing the best he could then and Adolin was acting like a whiny spoiled child a lil bit) but now that im halfway though RoW i like- kinda dont like him as a parent. So ig im making him the parent I want him to be.

but also what are your thoughts on that? do you like Dalinar willfully committing sin bc he's worried for his son? plz comment they are my only motivation to write this lol

Adolin had not expected this. The storming bridgeboy was his soulmate?! In a way he felt cheated by the universe, he’d always imagined that his soulmate would be a lovely lighteyed woman, someone he could successfully court for once, not some storming darkeyed slave who was insubordinate as Damnation. 

Still he tried to make the best of it. Unfortunately attempts at friendship turned sour, and the two of them fell into a pattern of barely disguised dislike. 

Adolin would give the former bridgeman unreasonable orders and the bridgeboy would do them without complaint (not wanting Adolin to have the satisfaction of hearing him say that he couldn’t do as he’d ordered) 

The situation wasn’t too awful, there was an unspoken agreement that this was between them, and nobody else. (The other bridgemen and Adolins family, were never involved in their pettiness) 

The rivalry continued, Adolin finding more and more ways to annoy the bridgeboy. Kaladin often finds loopholes in his orders to get under his skin. (For example once Adolin had ordered Kaladin to wash all the kitchen spoons in a highstorm. During the next highstorm Adolin found the bridgeboy washing all the spoons, inside, saying “I hardly though you’d expect me to wash the spoons outside during a highstorm, Especially since the winds are likely to make them more dirty.” In perfectly respectful voice. His eyes glinting, knowing that he’d won that round) 

 

It was… stable, normal, and not insanely toxic… (they both had boundaries, lines they wouldn’t cross: Adolin knew the bridgeboy would protect him if there were an actual threat, and that he wouldn’t be insubordinate regarding anything that ACTUALLY mattered. In return Adolin never ordered him to do anything that might get him hurt or in trouble with his father.) 

But even so…

Storms Adolin was miserable. 

He had never wanted a soulmate with a bad relationship, even though he knew it was hypothetically possible.

 

See there are five kinds of soulmate, romantic, platonic, parental, rival, and enemy. 

Romantic and platonic are self explanatory, so is parental really, the two you really need to be able to differentiate are rival and enemy. 

 

A rival soulmate is what Kaladin was to Adolin, because a rival soulmate will typically dislike, and try to one up, or beat you at various things constantly throughout your lives, but still be on your side in the end. Rival soulmates will often protect each other in drastic circumstances and have even been heard to temporarily call truces when one party is going through something. 

 

Whereas a soulmate that falls into the category of ‘enemy’ will do everything they can to hurt, and or kill you. They will use you and take advantage of you anyway that they can. 

 

So, Adolin supposed it could’ve been worse. Still this isn’t what he wanted. 

Honestly after his mother died he’d craved a romantic or platonic soulmate to fill the void in his life. He didn’t want a parental one, since that felt dishonorable to his mother. All the same he wanted someone who would make him feel less alone. He was mad at the Almighty, and was taking it out on Kaladin. He knew that… he knew that the other man hadn’t asked for this either… he knew, but couldn’t stop it. 

 

He tormented Kaladin during the day, and cried himself to sleep at night

Hey! Ik its been awhile but idk how to write characters fighting and a part of me just wants them to get together already but thats just not how these two idiots work.

Ah well hopefully I’ll muster up the motivation for more quicker this time lol

I low-key live for kadolin and shakadolin I'd totally do a some kind of prompt swap with someone, but anyway there needs to be more plain Kadolin (even tho I love Shakadolin too) so I created this after I saw something similar left unfinished.

Also if y'all ever want a co-writer for Shakadolin or kadolin hit me up.
