Work Text:

Kiara was casually progressing on her stream scheduled for the day. Little did she know Calli watches almost every single one of her streams. Only not talking or appearing on the chat too much so Kiara would be able to focus on her stream. Since, she was fully aware Kiara would want to keep a conversation with her while she was there.

Kiara was doing a Q&A stream that fixated on questions about her. And most of the questions involved Calli, and admittedly, she couldn't help but smile everytime, and brush it off with a 'guh' when she notices she does.

She was unaware she was even smiling at the first place.

"Hello Tenchou! We've all known you are very lovely to us KFP. But since I am as new, I wanted to ask about what was the Phoenix life like before you met Calli? Also, Glory to Takamori!" Kiara read the question with her cheerful tone "Oh! I like this question!" Kiara continued.

Calli thought, the person that asked this question was a genius. Even she herself hasn't asked that question to Kiara, not that she hasn't thought of it. But Calli just didn't want to bring up Kiara's past because she knew it was atleast a slightly painful memory for Kiara.

"To begin with, the Phoenix life is alot better right now because I have Calli." Kiara proudly said, her avatar making a smug face before she laughed. Calli only blushing and groaning at the statement.

"But what it was like before her was... Okay. The rest of the Pheonix's are lively. Some having millennia's more of resurrection experience than I do! But it was still that moment that I recall, that the forest was suddenly... Covered up in black flames." Kiara spoke.

"The flames were different than what a Phoenix could compel! At that time, I have never really died because I was taken great care by Papa and Mama Phoenix. The moment I blinked, I was right infront of Calli. Injured and quite possibly dying." Kiara managed to say calmly.

Calli huffed. She remembered that memory. Back when she never showed mercy to anyone and was dedicated to her job and her job only. Back when she didn't have a human body. A pure and simple reaper.

"She was like 'Who are you. What are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here.' to me, but the moment I saw her. I smiled. Because to me, it was my first time seeing someone else besides my kind! Even when I'm dying you know." Kiara softly giggled.

"Aaaand we're stopping there. I already met her at that time so I wouldn't be continuing since the question only asked what it was like before meeting her." Kiara teased, she knew her viewers wanted to know more. Continuing with the stream.

Then Calli's lips formed a tiny smile. Her fingers moving to her keyboard, typing:

"I believe I didn't sound like that at that time, Kusotori."

And the moment Kiara turned to chat, she saw it. Her avatar widened it's eyes and Calli had it coming, Kiara began calling her name and her message was quickly filled with other chats saying 'DAD!' 'Dad's been watching' and such.

With a flick of her fingers, Calli had made a scroll appear, it was blank just yet. And it appeared floating right infront of her. A few seconds after it appeared. It began to get filled with names. The scroll would hold the exact named and numbers she had to reap and who she had reaped. Those she had already reaped are tinted a shade of crimson red. And those she had to reap with a normal black tint.

She checked, and checked, until the very last name at the bottom of the scroll appeared as if it's name is ash grey and faded. It was the first time she has seen such.

Calli sensed something wasn't right, the scroll faded as she turned around, her scythe held tightly as she swung it, yet kept the target a few inches away from it.

There was a Phoenix in the underworld.

"Who are you. What are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here." Calli had coldly said. The Phoenix was visibly injured, wounded all over.

But it appeared to attempt to smile, atleast it's eyes were in the shape of it. Only fueling her anger more.

The Phoenix had an echo-ish voice. It's beak didn't open when it spoke. Almost as if Calli was interacting with a god. Technically, because Phoenix's were mythical creatures. .

"Takanashi Kiara." The Phoenix spoke.

Calli was in utter shock. She had kept the scythe pointed at Kiara. And the scroll appeared to the side of her head once again. And there was the name. Takanashi Kiara. It wasn't tinted black, nor red.

"A Phoenix like you isn't supposed to be in the underworld unless summoned so."

The Phoenix panicked "I don't know how I ended up here."

Calli was now confused, just as Kiara was. Nonetheless, Kiara was a part of the scroll. Calli must do what she has to.

"Atleast it's your first and last time being here." said Calli, before she swung her scythe. The next thing that happened, the Phoenix's body fell to the ground, the mix of her multi-colored feathers glowing a very bright shade. Before it turned into ashes.

Calli sighed, before she turned to the scroll once again.

The name Takanashi Kiara was now in crimson tint.

So she took a last look on the pile of ashes, before she walked away. Though she was walking at a slow pace, her eyes were back and fixated at the list once again. Until another bright light from behind her caused for her shadow to form.

The Phoenix has resurrected. And at the scroll, her name appeared black. That was not supposed to happen to a name she has already reaped.

The Phoenix was in shock herself. But her eyes met with Calli's. And that moon shaped eyes meant she was smiling once again, and was happy to see Calli.

"May I get to know your na-"

Calli swung her scythe again. Cutting off the Phoenix and once again. Turned into ashes. Kiara's name appeared red once again. Until Calli waited for a few moments. The moment she was resurrected. Her name turned black once more.

The Phoenix stared at the Reaper. Finally using her wings to cover herself, incase Calli would kill her again. It would hurt less.

Calli also noticed how her injuries, along with her wounds had disappeared.

"If you wouldn't use that thing on me again, could we finally conversate?" The Phoenix asked.

Calli was still in shock, but there was nothing she can do. She made the scroll disappear. And let go of her scythe. The weapon dropping onto the grass. Calli held out her palm onto the air, right infront of Kiara.

Kiara peaked her head from her wings, her beak exposed, slowly leaning her head onto the hand. Calli thought how weak Kiara was for her size of a Phoenix. She didn't even try to fight back when she tried to kill her.

Calli felt it. Kiara's soft feathers making in contact with her hand. She hasn't made contact to animals in a long while. And the feeling made her smile deep inside, though, keeping a straight face.

"Alright Phoenix. Let's talk."

Calli looked at her hand, the same hand she had touched Kiara that day. She remembers how it happened, and that day changed her life forever. She told Kiara she would find a way to kill her so she wouldn't get alot more annoyed. Until she realized what being alone really was like.

Kiara's company made her feel at ease even after all the times she 'annoyed' her.

Kiara even told her how the rest of the Phoenix kind got wiped out. Yet their names or any signs of any Phoenix creature didn't appear on her list except for Kiara.

"If the rest of your kind disappeared after the black flames when they were a Phoenix, how come you are still alive?" Kiara read a chat, audibly, she gulped.

Calli's eyes widened from the question.

"W-well.... This question is not included at our questionaire. I believe I have to answer it another time." Kiara said before she moved on for the other questions.

"Don't leave me Kiara." Calli's fingers typed onto the chat almost immediately, sending it within a second.

As Kiara read the chat once more. Calli's outstanded as she took vision of it.

Calli for sure knew she was going to get clipped at this moment. But that didn't matter.

She didn't want to lose Kiara anymore.

Kiara made an 'Aww' sound before she said "Don't worry Calli. I will never leave you! You are my wife! And if anything, you are the reason why I will remain in this world." said Kiara in the most sincere way possible.

Calli groaned as usual, but she felt... Relieved hearing that from Kiara.

And Calli believes her. Life and Death together may seem odd, but that's how it is to them. And she has grown used to it.

Kiara's first resurrection will always be the most memorable one. Kiara might have lost her family in the process. But to have someone to treasure for the rest of their immortality, and answer all the questions about her past. That's something she will always keep in her heart.

Notes:

During the flashback part, visualize Kiara as a literal and a large Phoenix. Same goes for Calli, a literal reaper with a skeleton body. I like to think as Calli tried to find ways to reap her, Kiara had developed a body of a human since she went to explore the human realm herself since Calli didn't want to bring her in the underworld. For the underworld was a place so dull and Kiara was a colorful and an energetic bird. Kiara would outstand in appearance and draw attention that would get her in trouble. Calli is caring afterall.
