Work Text:

When Owen insisted on setting Jamie up on a blind date, she swore at him repeatedly for ten minutes. What the hell does he know about setting someone up on a date? He can’t even tell the woman he’s been in love with for years how he feels. But, she caved – like she always does – and agreed.

The only thing worse than going on a blind date, Jamie thinks, is having that date in the restaurant that her best mate owns. She could do without Owen's beady little eyes watching expectantly the whole time, adding pressure to an already uncomfortable situation.

She already knows how this is going to go, as she sits at the end of the bar, slowly turning her beer glass between her thumb and index finger; this mystery woman will turn up, she’ll be about as interesting as a plank of wood, they’ll have awkward conversation and they’ll end the night with a disingenuous, this was fun, take care.

Jamie is curious, though, since Owen won’t shut the fuck up about this date with Dani Clayton; that Jamie will adore her and she’ll be running back to him at the end of the night with endless praise. That’s all he's told her, though: Dani's name. No clue about what she’s like or what she does for work, just her name, insisting that’s all Jamie needs to know, like she’s some kind of mysterious Goddess.

She looks down at her watch and sighs. As far as first impressions go, being late isn’t a great way to start. She looks around the room, tapping her hand gently on the cold steel of the bar top. The first thing she notices is Owen walking towards the door with a huge, childish grin on his face, waving.

The second thing she notices is the woman he is pulling into an Owen special bear hug. They’re talking, laughing, and when Owen offers a hand to lead the woman in the direction of the bar, Jamie realises it’s Dani.

Dani, who is breathtakingly beautiful.

Even from a small distance, Jamie can see the blue of Dani's eyes sparkling cosmically, and fuck, if she couldn’t look into them for hours. The captivating smile Dani flashes when she looks at Jamie makes her entire world come to a screeching halt, not to mention the flurry of butterflies now invading her stomach.

There’s something familiar about her, and although confident she’s never met Dani before, Jamie can’t help but think they were always destined to meet.

Dani tucks a lock of golden hair behind her ear nervously as she approaches, leaving Owen to disappear back to the kitchen, and Jamie stands up to greet her with a crooked smile of her own.

Maybe this blind date wasn’t the worst idea in the world. Maybe, just maybe, she will have to thank Owen for setting her up with the prettiest woman to walk into Jamie’s life.
