Mando Back to the Clone Wars

Summary:

In which Din and Boba are time travelers--and also tiny. Din has no idea what's going on, but focuses on one goal: reuniting with Grogu. Boba's along for the ride. Unfortunately for them, the misunderstandings are only beginning...

Chapter 2: #01 - Have you seen my Jetii?

Summary:

Din doesn't really know who any of these people are. That's okay though, because Boba seems to know, and it's not important right now anyway.

(Also, the misunderstandings begin...)

PLEASE NOTE: This is getting a lot more attention than expected, so adding a note that I hope should be obvious for all content on AO3, but I feel the need to specify due to the nature of this being a comic.

Please do NOT repost, edit, translate, or otherwise use any of my art or comics. If you want to share it, please ONLY share the link, either from here on AO3 or Tumblr, and do NOT copy the images onto other platforms. This comic is simply far too time and effort intensive for me to tolerate art theft. Please just enjoy it on my platforms, where I may get some recognition for my work. Failure to respect my work will result in termination of this series. Thank you for your understanding!

Notes:

Thanks so much for stopping by, I was blown away by the reaction on the pilot art! ;A;

Because this is a comic/visual novel, this is the style you can probably expect for the comic parts ("probably" meaning "hopefully," assuming I can maintain it...*STRESS SWEATING*). Length of comics will vary greatly (ch 2 is MUCH longer), and there'll also likely be some illustrations/single panel comics thrown in!

Also, as you may have noticed, backgrounds are pretty much nonexistent. I hate drawing backgrounds, and have limited time and sanity, so I'm prioritizing by making the characters pretty. I hope this is a fair tradeoff ^ ^;;

As always, my content is put up in advance on Tumblr, so if you want to check for the next updates/just stop by to say hi, please come on over!

I have a general idea where I want this to go, and know exactly how I want it to end, and have the next few chapters plotted. But honestly how far I end up taking it will probably depend on how much people are enjoying it! If you liked, please do consider dropping a kudos or comment, it really means the world! <3

Chapter 3: #02 - The Darksaber

Summary:

Din has a laser sword. Din does not want a laser sword. So, Din gets rid of the laser sword, and the Darksaber finds a new wielder...?

Notes:

I was completely blown away by the response to the first comic chapter, thank y'all so much!! ;A; It definitely drove me to put extra effort into this chapter, I hope it didn't disappoint!

A couple of comments: I know this comic was originally tagged "crack taken seriously," and it sorta still is, the base premise kinda is ^ ^; But that being said, there's definitely going to be a mix of others too. There'll be angst (due to what the time travelers know from the first time around), and character introspection, and all sorts of things. I'm basically letting this roll where it will. If here are any chapter specific warnings, I'll put them in the comments at the top, but just keep that in mind! I'll still try to insert comedic elements, but the story will be my priority!

This comic will also incorporate lore from Legends. Which lore, and to what extent will vary. Jaster and the True Mandos will definitely come up again. Note that this comic will contain my own personal interpretations of how to mix Legends with current canon, and it should not be taken as official ^ ^;

Want to also make a note that Venator class star destroyers have a crew of 7,400 (most of whom are probably clones) and carry 2000 troops. Those numbers seem a bit off to me, but either way, there are definitely Thousands of clones on any single one of these ships ^ ^;

And yes, Cody gets the Darksaber! While this AU does technically have Boba, Din, and Grogu as its "main characters," it's also incredibly clones-centric, and Cody has a central role. A few more central clones will be introduced in the next chapter!

Last comment, not as fun, but given that this comic is getting a lot more attention than I anticipated (and for which I'm super grateful), I added a comment to the work end notes, which I'll repeat here:

Please do NOT repost, edit, translate, or otherwise use my art. I'm dead serious about this, this comic is a fun but also extremely taxing project. I just can't deal with art theft for this, and will likely drop the whole thing if it happens. Please, if you see someone doing it, tell them to take it down. For translations, soft translations (text only, no editing onto or reposting the images) with linked credit are fine.

Sorry for that downer comment, but I did feel the need to mention it, and I hope I won't need to bring it up again! ^ ^;

I'm already working on Comic #03, please check out my tumblr for updates!

Also, here's the link to this comic on Tumblr in case anyone wants to support it on there!

Thanks so much again for stopping by and reading, and I really hope you enjoyed this update! If you had any thoughts about it, your comments mean the world to me!

Chapter 4: #03 - Guardians

Summary:

Din finds clones a little confusing--after all, they look simultaneously younger and older than Boba! But still, they seem nice enough!

Notes:

(Or, enter ARCs Waxer and Boil, who will be joining the young Mandos on their travels--after all, Cody and Obi-Wan can't exactly let the kids travel without guardians!)

Here's the next chapter!

Notes:

-Yes, Waxer and Boil are ARCs, and the reason is because they deserve it, and I want them to have fancy armor (which I'm beginning to slightly regret because it's a PAIN to draw). They're central charas in this AU and will be sticking with the kids when they leave the Negotiator!

-The 212th boys who show up at the beginning are Wooley, Longshot, and Trapper! I'm reusing the designs I made for them from these arts!

-Yes, Cody is Kote in this AU, but also only to specific people in specific situations. Hopefully I'll get far enough to elaborate...!

-Lastly, apologies that this chapter is so short! It still took me a whole month to draw...Originally, this chapter was supposed to be double the length, but I cut it in half to make it more manageable. The second half, the conversation between Boba and Cody, will be in Chapter 4!

While I was drawing this, my art tablet was also in kinda critical condition--as in, I was genuinely afraid it would blow up in my face, and was extremely stressed as a result during the last few weeks working on this. My tablet's luckily been sent off to repairs now, but that also means that I can't work on digital art until it returns. This unfortunately means that I can't move forward with Ch 4 until it gets back ;_; I'm already so slow updating this, but this will further delay Ch 4, and I'm so sorry, I'm incredibly frustrated too, but there really wasn't any way I could delay repairs any further...

As always, thank you so much for stopping by and checking out this work! And an extra special thank you to everyone who comments/leaves kudos!! I have so many places I want to take this, and your incredibly kind words of support have really been fueling me, and keeping me going on those days when I'm not sure if it's worth it. So thank you so very much!!!

Chapter 5: #04 - The Last Clone

Summary:

Boba Fett--a time traveler sent thirty years back into the past, and into his child self's body--reunites with an important figure from his childhood. Cody is a man that Boba knows will suffer, and eventually die--and suddenly, the full weight of what it means to be in the past sinks in.

Notes:

WARNINGS: Mentioned (other timeline) major character death. Character does not stay dead.

Notes:

Hey all! So it's been like...four months since my last update. My art tablet issues aside, this chapter did indeed actually need that time, and I hope you can see why ^ ^;

I know it's quite different from the previous more lighter-hearted chapters, but this AU is really going to cover the whole range, and is not going to be remotely limited to comedy. There'll be plenty of angst too, but I hope it balances out!

First off, wanted to make a note: This comic is in Boba's POV. While I, the creator, am fully aware that Kix is the last clone, Boba's likely never heard of him. The title "The Last Clone" indicates how Boba feels about his own situation, so please don't try to correct me about it! Thanks! ^ ^;

Also wanted to make a note that I was working on this AU and had fully written and cemented this chapter's story well before TBOBF started airing. As such, my Boba is a lot broodier than how he's been depicted in the show so far. I love TBOBF's Boba, so this isn't meant to be a slight against him or Tem's depiction of him at all! I'll see if I can incorporate more elements of TBOBF's Boba moving forward, but my Boba will still probably angst a lot more overall, because he just has so many regrets, especially regarding the clones, and in many ways, specifically Cody.

Boba and Cody's relationship is so very essential to this AU, and I tried to give a lot of hints of it in this chapter. Now, I don't have a huge amount of confidence I'll actually get there, but if I do, my plan for this AU includes a lot of Kamino flashbacks, with a Boba-sized Cody and an even tinier Boba. Of course, this AU will still have plenty of Din and Grogu and "present" Clone Wars as well, as well as "flash aheads" to Boba's original life...anyway, it might take a while to get there, if I ever do ^ ^;

In the meantime though, I wanted to make a mention that a large amount of the world-building and background I'm developing for Boba, Cody, and all fo the clones on Kamino is actually shared between this AU and a fic I'm currently writing called The Prime Override. I started developing the Prime Override and Mando Back together, and consider them sorta "brothers" in a way? They have completely different central plots and focuses, and the Prime Override will be more Cody + Jango + other clones POV, while Mando Back is far more heavily Boba's. But a lot of the Kamino backstory will be the same, including Boba's relationship with Cody on Kamino.

Given the pace at which I can produce content for these stories, it'll definitely be revealed in the Prime Override sooner, so if you get impatient do consider checking it out! And even if the Prime Override gives spoilers for Mando Back, I hope that the ways this backstory interacts with Mando Back's story, along with its more visual medium will still make it something fresh and interesting when I get to it here.

Also completely random, but a fun way to enjoy this chapter is to read all of Boba's inner dialogue in Tem's voice, and all of his outer spoken dialogue like Daniel Logan imitating Tem! hehe

Anyway, sorry for the long comments!! I hope you enjoyed this chapter, and that it gave you some food for thought. I'll probably be posting some individual frames on my Tumblr and Twitter as well, so do come by to check those out if you're interested!!

(and also a reminder to please, please not repost this or any of my work. That's the fastest way to guarantee I won't continue it!)

(also, please don't ask for more--I'm glad you liked it, but this really drained me, and some kind words would help me recover a lot more ;_; )

As always, thank you so much for taking the time to check out my work!! If you enjoyed, I'd be so incredibly grateful for any kudos or thoughts or stopping by to say Hi's on my socials <3

Chapter Text

Boba through the ages insert illustration

Notes:

I'm so sorry to everyone who thought this was a chapter update--unfortunately it's not, but I hope this is still nice to look at, especially if you haven't seen it already on my socials!

While this work is primarily a comic, adding illustrations once in a while will let me update a bit more frequently. And given that this work starts with a pilot illustration and it's been 4 chapters since, I figured now's a good time.

I thought about putting this illustration in my main SW art dump, but think it fits here better. While it was drawn mainly to celebrate the finale of The Book of Boba Fett, it also absolutely depicts my own take on Boba, which is what we'll see in this work (yes we'll eventually be seeing this version of young adult Boba too!).

The following are some comments regarding the art itself, since a lot of thought went into it!

1) The Mando'a text is an elaboration of Boba's chain code shown in Mando S2. It reads (right to left, top to bottom):

Fett Boba
Father Fett Jango
Mentor Mereel Jaster
Mand'alor of the True Mandalorians

(*The parts in italics are the words I added in. Everything else is shown in canon)

2) On color/theme:
Top oldest Boba - bg sand clouds + Tatooine suns, gold theme
Middle young Boba - bg smoke (think ESB carbon freezer), green theme
Bottom smol Boba - bg waves (Kamino), blue theme

3) This is easier to see in without all the foreground stuff, but the combined silhouette of the 3 Bobas roughly forms a Mythosaur, with the long skirt from oldest Boba + cape from Middle Boba curling down to form the tusks. It's not the clearest but that's the idea behind that!

4) There are also hexagons throughout the art, both the outer frame and in the gratuitous amounts of hexagon-shaped sun beams/lens flare. Hexagons feature prominently in Mando armor/fashion/architecture!

5) The foreground weaving line of smoke(?) connects all 3 Bobas at the helmet. At Jango's helmet (bottom) one strand of smoke ends. The smoke always cuts under Boba's helmet at the neck, bc no matter how much he grows, Boba will never forget Jango and the impact of his death.

6) Lastly, there's a progression in how he holds the helmet. Smol Boba is looking down on Jango's helmet. Middle young!Boba is raising it, about to wear it. And the top oldest Boba is wearing it. It can be read as gradually finding himself, or something of the like. I had earlier drafts showing oldest Boba's face, but that would mean this movement isn't completed, so I decided to go with helmeted Boba in the end.

(also Daniel Logan saw this art and I high-key screamed)

I was also holding off on working on this AU until the end of The Book of Boba Fett, to see if there'll be any new content I want to include. Now that it's finished, I'll be resuming work on Chapter 5.

Thanks for your patience and support for this work!! <3

Notes:

Thanks so much for stopping by! This originally started out as a single illustration with far too many headcanons behind it, and I decided to turn it into a comic ^ ^

I honestly have no idea how long I'll have the energy to continue this, but if anyone can spare any love or encouragement, I'll do my best to turn that into fuel to keep drawing! (That being said, it is massively time consuming to draw even one of these chapters. So while encouragement is immensely appreciated, please don't pressure me to update! You'll make me cry! ;_; )

I'm also always lonely, so if anyone wants to come say hi or see my cats, I'm on TUMBLR, TWITTER, and INSTAGRAM!
