    Evan’s life seemed to be ruled by contradictions lately. His mind was a stream that tore fragments of thoughts from his grasp. He wasn’t ever quite sure how he was feeling, because the moment he identified a thought or a sensation, he was already swept away from it, moving towards some new destination he only had an obstructed view of. In one moment, he’d be adrift in time, perfectly content that way; the next, he was struggling against the current, gasping for air, his strength failing him. Evan had once read in a Cub Scouts magazine that you could make a makeshift flotation device out of a pair of jeans. Well, Evan had always hated the feeling of denim on skin, so he guessed he was doomed to sink or struggle to swim without any aid.
