Work Text:
It was raining. Again. It was the third time that week. But unlike the other days, the news did not warn about a rainy day today. So Kara Danvers went to work in black jeans and a white social shirt. It was not a problem for her because she was already at CatCo. She did not think she would have to go anywhere from there. Only at home at the end of the day. However, Cat Grant, her boss, sent her in a last-minute interview to L-Corp. She did not have to ask who she was supposed to interview because she already knew it would be her girlfriend.
Kara could see it was raining through the windows of CatCo, but she did not expect it would be so violent. But it didn’t matter to her as she was not going to walk to L-Corp. One of CatCo’s drivers would drive her to her destination. When they got in front of L-Corp, the driver stopped. She didn’t understand why he had stopped instead of going to the covered parking lot. But she couldn’t do anything about that, so she just opened the car’s door and ran to the building.
She didn’t fall, so she considered a winning run. When she entered the building, she saw some people staring at her. She didn’t expect otherwise since she was soaked. She went to the elevator, and from there, went to the 15th floor. In there, she noticed how people’s gazes were way more intense than they should be while looking at someone caught by the rain.
When she was about to look at what everyone was looking at, a hand gripped her wrist and pulled her into Lena’s office. Kara was about to protest when Lena shut her up with a soft kiss.
“You know, darling, you really shouldn’t wear white shirts when it’s raining.” — said Lena staring at her girlfriend’s toned abs.
Kara looked down and realized why people were looking mesmerized at her. No one could have imagined that sweet Kara Danvers had a Greek Goddess body, especially when she wore old-lady outfits. But today was a different day because she had peeked in nice clothing, according to her sister.
“Darling? Who’s darling? I’m Kara Danvers from CatCo Magazine, and I’m here to interview you, Ms. Luthor”. Kara answered her girlfriend in a faux seriousness and smiled when Lena laughed.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Danvers, I thought you were someone else. But before you start asking your questions, you have to change that shirt, or I won’t be able to concentrate.” — Lena said, and then took her blazer off to handle it to Kara, who got even more attractive wearing it.
After the interview, they went to a restaurant nearby. One that Kara has never been to, not because she didn’t know about its existence, but because it was expensive, and it had a long waitlist. Lena was sure that Kara would love it. Kara was impressed when she got into the place. It was the most beautiful sushi place she’s ever been to, which says a lot because Kara loves sushi restaurants and tries a different one every two weeks. It was minimalist and illuminated by golden light. All the waiters were in black, contrasting the chefs in white.
“Wow, Lee. It is amazing. Do you think the food taste as good as it looks?” — Kara asked, looking at the great variety of options on the menu.
Lena smiled at the dorky smile that Kara had and nodded in agreement. Lena was happy that she was able to take Kara to a place that she could enjoy it. Since she was a child, she had only been in fancy restaurants with her family. They couldn't have been seen anywhere but fancy places. They had to be careful. After all, they were Luthors.
Then she met Kara, this beautiful reporter who showed her that her last name didn’t matter. She could be a Luthor and do the same things a Smith would do. It didn’t matter to Kara if Lena’s family was involved in something shady because Kara could see Lena for whom she is, not for what her family had done.
She had refused many of Kara’s invitations to hang out, but Lena decided to give it a try and accepted to have lunch with the reporter as friends. It was one of the best days of Lena’s life. She could never have imagined that one of her finest days would be eating junking food at a corner establishment in the hidden part of the city.
Since that day, they became closer and closer until they started dating.
But one thing bothered Lena: she didn’t know any restaurants to take Kara to. All the ones they had gone to, Kara was the one who picked. She only knew fancy and boring places that Kara wouldn’t like. But this new sushi place was the perfect one to change that.
They ordered food and talked about how their week went and flirting a bit. Just a bit, just enough that no one notices that they are dating. It’s not that Lena is embarrassed by her girlfriend or anything alike. She is concerned for Kara to get caught up by the media in the middle of the mess that is her family. Kara is okay with that. She is a reporter and understands the trouble that exposing their relationship right now might cause.
They had a wonderful time there, not wanting to leave, but they had to. When they got in the parking lot, Lena pushed Kara against her car and kissed her passionately. She spent all of her self-control inside that restaurant. She couldn’t take not kissing Kara anymore. A simple gesture that is going to change their lives.
Lena Luthor awakes the next day with her phone’s noise. Her best friend, Samantha Arias, is calling desperate to her. When she takes the call, she’s sleepy but soon is alert when she notices the nervousness in her friend’s voice.
“Have you seen it? Have you seen the video, Lena?” — Sam asks in a rush. Lena, who has no idea what Sam is talking about, stays in silence. “I’m gonna send it to you,” Sam says before hanging up the call.
Lena receives a video that shows her pushing Kara against her car and kissing her. Okay, so the paparazzi finally found out she’s dating. Why was Sam so desperate? Kara can’t be identified by it.
After seeing the video couple of times and not understanding, Lena decides to search for her name on the internet, which is never a good idea, but she had to find out what was happening. Her chin dropped. The tabloids were accusing her of harassing a blond girl, saying all kinds of intangible things about her.
Reading those headlines was not a good way to start the day. So she took a shower to think about her course of action and went to L-Corp, where lots of cameras were expecting her. She thought of going to the parking lot where they couldn’t follow her, but considering that it was the spot of the images, she didn’t believe it would be a good idea. So she exited her car in front of the company, ignoring the cameras and walking directly to the company.
The moment she got in her office, a nervous Samantha entered and started to ask a lot of questions. Lena didn’t have an answer for any of them. It was not up to her to fix that mess. It would require Kara to be in the spotlight, but she couldn’t ask Kara to do that. It would be too much. She shouldn’t have to leave her comfortable situation to get into the Luthor world.
When Lena was about to tell Sam that she had no idea what to do, the door open showing an outrageous Kara Danvers. “Lee, I know you don’t want me to be in any way related to your name, but I don’t care. I never cared, Lee. I know you think you are protecting me, but you’re harming yourself, and I can’t let that happen. I love you. I love you so much. One day I’ll marry you, and when that day arrives, we’ll share last names. I don’t think you’ll want to hide a marriage, so what’s the difference between letting people now and then?”.
Lena was shocked since Kara never speaks so confidently. It was such an encouraging speech. She couldn’t deny it. She relaxed and walked to Kara and kissed her softly. Lena asked Kara a hundred times if she was sure that she wanted to do that. Lena wasn’t trying to convince Kara not to do it. She was just worried, as usual. After being reassured about it, Lena sets up a press conference.
The reporters were waiting for the CEO muttering, almost betting, about her excuses. Ten minutes after the scheduled time, Lena hadn’t shown up. People were getting even more intrigued. Two minutes later, CatCo’s reporter shows up at the podium. Kara starts talking when everybody is silent.
“I know I’m not the one you want to see here. At least that is what you think for now. I am the blond you’ve been making up awful stories. I don’t understand how some people can write such things about an innocent person, and I’m not just talking about yesterday. If Lena wasn’t Lena, if Lena was a man, you wouldn’t be talking about the situation like this. You know —she laughs—Lena’s worried about me being in here. Not because she has done something wrong, because she hasn’t. She’s worried that you will follow me around, harass me, as you’d say. She’s concerned that her girlfriend might hear horrible things just for dating her” — the crowd stops breathing for a moment. Kara “Pulitzer winner” Danvers dating a Luthor? They couldn’t believe it. “And before you start to say you couldn’t have known that, you shouldn’t have posted anything. And also, it wasn’t that hard to see that I was wearing her blazer” — Kara says that last sentence with a smirk.
Lena had tears in her eyes. She loved Kara so much and needed to show their love to the world. She ran to Kara and kissed her. Lena Luthor showed the world that not all the Luthors are full of hate, that some can love.
