Work Text:
Dream was never one to like drinking.
He hates everything about it. The flavour, aftertaste, the burning of the liquid pouring down his throat, the smell—he couldn’t bear it.
Especially around his friends and family, sure he had drank sometimes to get his mind off some things or relieve stress (when in reality it just brought more). It definitely wasn’t his best moment or his go-to when drinking.
So when his parents invited him and his “boyfriend” that he didn’t even have , he was sure to get just a little tipsy. There was always Sapnap, who he was definitely crushing on—and George has even talked to him about it.
He fiddled with his fingers, how the hell was he going to ask Sapnap to dinner with his family without getting drunk. Sure it was one thing to ask your best friend of eleven years to pretend to be your boyfriend so your family isn’t disappointed, but getting drunk around him was a no go.
He was quick to run to Sapnap’s room nonetheless, taking a deep breath before knocking on his door.
Ivory teeth sunk into pink flesh as Dream bit down on his bottom lip, dragging his teeth back.
Sapnap opened the door, stood there in an oversized black tee-shirt with gray sweatpants. His beard seemed freshly shaved, wavy hair falling slightly over his ears.
“Uh—hey Sap I—I have a question,” Dream mumbled, biting his tongue. It shouldn’t be that hard, right? Just ask to fake date for the night. That was all.
No big deal.
“Go for it man.” He smiled—shining white under a fold of pink.
Dream sighed, “I—my parents think I um have a boyfriend and they invited me to go to dinner with said boyfriend—but I don’t have a boyfriend—so I—I was wondering if you could pretend to be my boyfriend? Just for the night?”
Chuckling, Sapnap shook his head. “You want me to be your fake boyfriend so your family believes you?” He recited, laughing at his idiot of a friend.
“You don’t have to like me, you just need to pretend you do. It’s—it’s just going to be for one night and there will be so much food and drinks and it’s all free, you—you just need to say yes and maybe take my hand a few times that night.. okay?” Dream smiled awkwardly, picking at his finger nail.
“Sure, what could go wrong?”
A lot. A lot could go wrong within the first thirty minutes they were there. All of their drinks had already arrived, Dream’s mom having a wine while his father had a glass of coke-a-cola. Drista—who was sitting next to their mother and father had been eyeing them all night.
Dream awkwardly shuffled in his chair, fixing his suit. Sapnap smiled at Dream’s parents—sure they had met before but as far as his parents knew they were just friends.
“So,” his dad coughed, looking between Sapnap and Dream. “How long have you two been a thing ?”
There was a split-second pause before Dream spoke up, licking his lips. “About a month,” he smiled, slipping his hand into Sapnap’s below the table.
Soft, delicate, and lush hands. He wanted to hold them forever, not just a one time thing.
Sapnap nodded his head, agreeing with Dream’s lie. In reality Dream had just been pining over the man for a month now (maybe more).
The two looked at each other, Dream’s thumb rubbing over Sapnap’s knuckles lightly. A soft smile was passed between the two before looking back to the table. Dream’s face flushed a light pink, bringing his left hand up to his nose.
Drista glared at him before pushing her chair back and standing up. “ Clay, ” she whispered through gritted teeth. “Can I talk to you please?”
Dream simply nodded his head, quickly being dragged by the wrist by Drista. The two stopped at an empty wall, nearly crowded by people.
“You two aren’t dating, are you?” She asked, raising her eyebrow.
Dream’s eyes widened, shaking his head slowly.
“You like him though, don’t you?”
He sighed, licking his lips and rolling his eyes. “Why does it even matter? C’mon let’s just go back,”
She simply huffed, following Dream back to the table, skipping any questionable looks from Sapnap or their parents.
The rest of the night was completed with friendly chatter and a few drinks, Dream tried to stay low on them so Sapnap wouldn’t have to take care of him… again.
Last time he got drunk in front of Sapnap he practically almost passed out.
It wasn’t the best.
But his luck shined through when his ‘sober man’ thoughts hadn’t been able to make their way out of his mind.
Two drinks later he was a bit tipsy—barely even noticeable. Simply smiling and laughing with the rest of the table.
Three drinks later he was definitely getting somewhere, not nearly drunk
but tipsy.
Four.
Five.
Six.
“Dream,” Sapnap whispered, tapping on Dream’s shoulder. “Let's go home, okay?”
He simply nodded his head, turning back towards his family. “Well, this has been extremely nice,” he smiled, “but I think it’s time for me and Sap to go home.”
Dreams mother smiled, nodding her head. “Be safe you two!”
They nodded their heads in sync, following to their car. “I love you,” Dream murmured. “Thank you for doing this,”
Sapnap laughed. “Of course.”
—
Of course they were safe. Sapnap kept them safe. He took care of Dream—he always did. He automatically knew what to do when Dream was drunk—it was simple really.
One. Get him a glass of iced water.
Two. Bring him to his room.
Three. Get Advil out and put it on his night desk along with water.
Four. Make sure he takes off his shirt
Five. Stay with him.. all night.
Even including sharing a bed. It wasn’t uncommon when Dream got drunk—to feel a body behind his.
Yes—it made him extremely flustered, but Sapnap was well—Sapnap—and would never let him sleep alone whilst drunk. He knew it was for his safety but that was what made him realize his unknown feelings.
He always complained to George about it. How Sapnap would never like him back, then the next second be completely lovestruck over a text from him.
Sapnap sat next to him on the bed, looking at his eyes—practically forcing eye contact. “How are you feeling?”
“I'm fine pandas,” Dream chuckled, forcing his eyes away and laying on his side.
Sapnap bit his lip, moving to lay next to him.
“Hey um—Sap?” Dream asked hesitantly, not daring to turn and look at the younger.
Sapnap hummed in response, closing his eyes and bringing his hand up to Dream’s shoulder.
“You told me before that um—a drunk man’s words are a sober man’s thoughts—so I wanted to do this now because the alcohol gives me confidence!” He rushed out quickly—adding a sarcastic tone at the end.
Sapnap laughed to himself, remembering the look on Dream’s face when he had learned that. How shocked and embarrassed he was—how easily his cheeks went bright pink.
“Go for it man,”
Taking a deep breath of air, Dream shut his eyes tightly. “I know this was all fake but… it felt real to say that I love you—and hold your hand or even glance at you—I guess what I’m trying to say is I like you? I love you?”
"Please don’t get my hopes up,” he whispered.
Dream’s eyebrow raised, shifting his body to look at Sapnap. His hand raised to brush a piece of hair off of his forehead—offering a small dumb smile.
“I’m not.” His voice stayed quiet, almost trying not to break the perfect silence between them. His eyes flickered down to Sapnap’s lips, a small smile forming on his own. “I’m being one hundred precent honest Sap,”
“Dream you’re just—you’re just drunk, okay? We can talk about this in the morning.”
Sighing, Dream turned back over. Tomorrow.
—
Today. It was the day. Dream’s eyes cracked open, immediately met with rays of sunlight from the window. He groaned and turned over, eyes falling to Sapnap who was cuddled in a blanket, hair messy from tossing and turning all night.
Cute.
He blinked slowly—adjusting to the change of light.
“G’morning,” he whispered groggily, eyes lifting to Dream’s.
Dream smiled, “good morning.”
“Do you remember what you told me last night?” Sapnap asked, hope sliding into his mind.
Dream bit his lip and nodded. “I do.. and it still applies,”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Sapnap’s face practically lit up, quickly snatching a small kiss from Dream.
Dream shook his head, face flushing and a stupid smile plastered on his face. “At least make it a good kiss,” he teased, cupping Sapnap’s face.
He simply rolled his eyes before locking his lips with Dream’s, bringing him in for their first proper kiss.
