The magic of Ginger Ale and Crackers

Summary:

Arthur goes to Merlin in search of help for Gwen's morning sickness

Work Text:

This had been going on for weeks now, every morning without fail Gwen would wake up, eat a very small amount of breakfast and proceed to spend half her morning with a chamber pot and a lot of grumbling under her breath. It had gotten to the point that both Gaius and Arthur didn't know what else they could do for their beloved queen.

Usually Merlin was the last resort, but Arthur was growing more concerned by the day and Gwen was now on bed rest. He stormed into his Court Warlocks chambers without knocking, Merlin was used to this now and doesn't look up from what he was working on "Merlin, I need your help" Arthur says, his voice sounding even more serious than after finding out about the other man's magic, which is why Merlin freezes in place before looking up at his friend.

Before he could think of the worst possible scenario, Arthur spoke "can magic help with morning sickness?" He asks as he begins to pace. Merlin watches in confusion for several seconds before sighing "magic can't, but I know of two things that can" he says before rushing from the room, an even more confused Arthur hot on his heels as they make their way to the kitchens.

Before Arthur can yell at him for getting distracted, Merlin comes out with several things and makes his way to his and Gwen's chambers, smiling sympathetically when he looks at a very unhappy Gwen.

He quickly sets the things he'd brought down on the table, before filling the mug of Ginger Ale and snapping several Crackers. Gwen watched him in quiet curiousity as he comes over with whatever thing she was being subjected to this time "take small sips and eat that as slowly as you can" he says, physician tone out in full force causing Gwen to smile and do as she'd been asked "this will work?" She asks after a few minutes, watching as her friend nods with a certainty that Gaius hadn't had which calms her nerves a little.

Over the next few days, Gwen does the same thing every morning and is surprised to find that this strange remedy actually works "how'd you know it would work?" She asks as both he, Gaius and Arthur were in the room with her "it's what mother had when she was pregnant with me, she recommended it when I wrote to her" Merlin says with a cheeky grin, Gwen silently sent her thanks to Hunith for her remedy and gave Merlin's hand a gentle squeeze in thanks as she could finally get out of bed and continue with her day once more.
