Work Text:
All Richie’s done for the past 3 months was ‘take a break’. It was long overdue and she’d been craving to spend some true alone time with her lovely wife. If anything, she took the break to spend time with Eddie, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. Work on top of work (at least to the best of Richie’s knowledge) was placed on top of Eddie’s perfectly polished wooden desk, which costs more than it should. That’s the excuse Eddie has used for the past 3 months. Richie knows she’s not lying because she really is glued to her chair like nothing else in the world matters. Her hair is always in a mess, unless she has a virtual meeting to attend. Sweat pants and Richie’s old sweater was all she wore. It wasn’t like Eddie to wear the same thing twice, let alone in one day. As much as Eddie promised her that she was fine, Richie knew something had to be done or her poor wife would end up working herself into a coma.
So, to combat this, Richie figured she could do what she does best to get the truth out of her:
Annoy her.
It wasn’t a bad idea and no one could tell her otherwise. Bill however, suggested that the outcome of her plan would result in a possible divorce. Richie promised to put that line in one of her future shows.
Richie spent the majority of the week figuring out how she would go about that. Every single plan resulted with a happy (and slightly horny) Eddie wanting to be with her wife rather than in front of her computer. In order for her plan to work, Richie would have to get creative and very precise with how she went about planning. The planning phase was actually going well. Richie took the time to go over every detail and make sure it could go absolutely perfect.
Then Richie got bored.
She would take a look at the tiny bullet point list that she made on her phone and lose interest in what she thought up. Plus, Eddie wasn’t dumb. She’d easily figure out that Richie was planning something and put her defence up. So, Richie ditched it and decided to get Eddie to take a break some other way. It wasn’t easy, trying to get Eddie to stay off the computer. It seemed that paperwork and informational meetings were more important than Richie and you can only imagine how Richie felt about that.
“You need to take a break.” Richie finally said one late Tuesday night. Eddie was coming back from her office in one of the spare rooms and looked up at Richie with a confused look on her face.
“Take a break?” She asked, rubbing the side of her face before checking her watch. Once she realized the time, she hummed while nodding her head before yawning. It made Richie itch. How could someone invest so much time into the job that they lose track of the time and be okay with it??
“Yeah. You leave the office at 3, there’s no need for you to have fucking...homework or some shit. You’re not in college.”
“Richie…”
“I’m serious. This cannot be healthy and you know I don’t know a damn thing about health.”
Eddie snorted and brushed her hair out of her face before walking up to Richie and patting her cheek. She gave her a soft smile before turning to the coffee machine and turning it on.
“Well, someones gotta pay the bills when you’re not on tour, my love.”
Sure, Richie wasn’t on tour, but she was still popping up on small shows and doing commercials. She just didn’t do anything too big, it was a break after all. As much as she wanted to explain this in great detail to Eddie, she knew she’d just find some other way to nestle herself back into her office and work some more hours of her life away.
“You saw my last check. I can pay the bills and then a whole lot more with just that one alone.”
“Good for you.”
Eddie’s eyebrows furred close together and she bit her bottom lip as she closed the lid of the coffee maker and pressed the button. Richie knew she was in trouble. Eddie had always made it known to her that she didn’t want Richie to just pay for everything and that was before they even got married. But of course, Richie forgets because it’s just a natural thing for her to do for someone that she loves. Buy things and gift things and pay for all the bills because she can and because she wants too. Richie wants Eddie to live a comfortable and fancy life because she loves her. Sometimes, Richie likes to think that Eddie does too but won’t admit it because she’s too stubborn.
“What do I have to do to make you stop working so much?” Richie finally asked. Eddie looked up at her for a second before grabbing a new coffee mug and pouring her freshly brewed coffee inside.
“Literally nothing and don’t try to come up with something because I’m just going to work harder.”
Richie groaned, taking off her glasses and rubbing the bridge of her nose. Eddie was making this whole ‘take a break’ plan really hard to accomplish. Of course, Richie could come up with something stupid and get Eddie to physically not work anymore but then that runs the risk of Eddie hating her for a week.
Unless…
“Why are you working so much?”
“Because, like I said-”
“Besides the bills. If bills weren’t a thing that existed, would you still be working this hard?”
Eddie paused all her movements and stared into her cup. She was thinking way too hard for a simple question. Richie was internally begging for a no, for a ‘no baby, I’m only doing this because you’re not on tour’ type of response. But what Richie got was far from it.
“I would because I feel like I have too. I can’t live in the house and know that I haven’t contributed to it. I can’t use the fucking bathroom knowing that I didn’t help pay the water bill. This is your house Richie and I can’t just live in it without putting in the hard work.”
“You’d feel bad if you didn’t?” Richie asked softly. No reply.
“Eddie, I love you. I’m going to be honest with you, I could care less if you paid the bills. Hell, I wouldn’t be upset over the fact that you don’t even have a job. I’m doing really well and I’ve done the hard work to make it this big and I want to share it with you for no cost because I love you. I didn’t marry you because you’d make paying the bill easier. I married you because I want to spend the rest of my funny and unfunny days with you. Grow old in this house and mess this house up and rearrange it and everything with you. Have kids and raise them here with you. Eddie, if you wanted to move, I’d pick everything up and march to where ever you point because-”
Eddie stopped Richie from saying any more tear inducing words with a passionate kiss. Coffee was abandoned and everything. All that mattered was Eddie’s hands on Richie’s cheek as she kissed her. It was better than the quick pecks in the morning, better than the cheek kisses at night, better than any kiss Richie had received since Eddie had started working for fucking hard. It made the top 5 best kisses on Richie’s imaginary list.
Once Eddie pulled away, Richie went to open her mouth again when Eddie pressed her finger up against her lips.
“Say one more word and I go back into that office.”
Richie closed her mouth shut fast. Eddie let out a hearty laugh before wrapping her arms around Richie’s waist and pulling her into a deep hug. Richie quickly returned it, burying her face into Eddie’s hair.
“Gonna take that break?” She mumbled. Eddie jabbed her side with her thumb but Richie didn’t move one bit. All she did was smile.
“Yes, I will.”
